Isabel - FS2004 winds are absurd!

All,Take a look at the screen shot. This shows the current winds at KHSE on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. According to FS2004 downloaded weather (here being interpreted by Pete Dowson's freeware WeatherSet2 program) the surface winds in the middle of Hurricane Isabel are calm! Observations at higher altitudes seem reasonable. Could it just be that the eye is over the airport but if that was the case wouldn't the upper winds also be light?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/37682.jpgCould this be a bug or have Microsoft redefined what constitutes a hurricane? ;)Cheers,

It's most likely because the anemometer at KHSE blew away.

That'll be a good jolt when you cross 1010! :-lolhttp://saltydogfly2.avsim.net/images/avsim_sig.jpg"Ah, the Luftwaffe - the Washington Generals of the History Channel." - Homer Simpson

I hadn't considered that. Sounds more than likely, thanks.

I just checked Duats also. The 1518z observation is the last one with any wind information. The anemometer really must have been lost after that. If you go to Kill Devil Hills, KFFA, the real weather there shows the 40kt winds....don't know how long that will last either.

To be more realistic, the communications lines to the NOAA network are probably out and that is why there are no further reports. The weather equipment runs in the tens of thousands of dollars to procure and maintain and can withstand very harsh conditions. It would be more likely all of the structures at KHSE would be blown away before the ASOS equipment is affected.

Well, FSMeteo 6.2 is showing partly cloudy skies over much of North Carolina....highly unrealistic! Come on Activesky 2.0!

Blimey, you'll all want trees flying across your living room next ...I had a good hour this morning trying to do circuits in various things out of Norfolk, Virginia. FSMeteo gave me some lovely 70 knot winds and it all tallied with what was going on for real, apart from the fact that I doubt that there were any nuts like me playing touch and go with 747SPs and Piper Cub (Piper Cub not an aerobatic aircraft, did I hear you say? Funny, it was this morning ...)Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg

Garbage in. Garbage out.Jim

Around 7:30-8:00pm last evening (EDT), I took a plane over to Norfolk airport. A cessna. Besides having near-zero runway visibility in clouds and fog, the FS2004 system had it raining practically sideways. I managed to take off in RECORD short distances due to a constant 35 kt wind, but what really did it was the gusts....If you want to feel like a puppet, take a Cessna up into weather with 60-80 kt gusts. Using FSNavigator to TRY to get back to the runway, my aircraft on a great many occasions was being blown SIDEWAYS faster than it was travelling forwards. Very disconcerting to see on the moving map. Another fun simulator trick (with crashes off) was to face into the wind on the ground, give it some gas to get airborn, and wait for a gust. Felt like a bird playing in strong headwinds, as from the spot view I was going pretty much nowhere, but I had full vertical authority on the controls - until the gust ceased. Then it was time to go down. Fast. :) I guess I caught a weather station in time! (Using FSMeteo)-Germ

This was a trick you could try way back in FS5.1. Set a headwind of 60kts and release the brake. The Cessna would lift off with the engines off! Not recommended if you want to get back down though.I'll stick to a 747 I think ;-)Cheers,

Not to put a damper on all your hurricane hunter fun guys, but remember there has been some real, genuine trouble down there on the Outer Banks. Right now most of the Outer Banks is not in communication with the outside world - has no power, water, or telephone service. Many villages mainland side were flooded. At least 3 people in NC died and more might be found when they get out there to check the houses that were swept into the ocean and the sounds. And, there is a new inlet north of Hatteras and a new inlet dividing Ocracoke island. Just a reminder that these are not just your average everyday rainstorms.Have fun but remember a lot of my fellow North Carolinians today are in real trouble.
