September 19, 200322 yr Moderator You're quite right. The main reason I was showing so much interest in this particular hurricane is because I have a friend who lives near Raleigh (Apex) and has been preparing for Isabel's arrival.I fully realise the damage these storms can do and would never knowingly make light of one. Fortunately we don't get them in England.I hope you haven't been too badly affected. Fortunately, the storm has now weakened and is now classed as a tropical depression.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). September 19, 200322 yr We were very lucky up here in the Triangle. We had some good winds and our power was out at home for only 5 hours. Even the rain was no big deal this time (compared to Floyd). There was not too much tree damage but some did fall and some limbs broke. Not bad though (compared to Fran)I must admit, however, before the power went out, I took a little flight from Cherry Point to Raleigh in a 330 airbus at 2000 feet using the sim downloaded weather and wasn't too impressed. According to the news reports the Outer Banks will be days if not weeks trying to clean up the mess. Not to mention the homes that are just plain gone.
September 20, 200322 yr LOL Ray!Remember FS98? You could set the weather in multiplayer sessions if you were the host. Some hosts with a sense of the absurd would wait until everyone was on the ground, then set the winds to some crazy value. More than a few times I'd find myself going from a parked position up to the virtual "pearly gates".... God forbid anyone announce themselves as "new" to multiplayer. They got the "treatment" straight away...Wonder why the feature was removed from later versions of multiplayer? :-sae :-sae :-sae
September 20, 200322 yr Moderator Hi John,I never used the multiplayer facility but I can imagine it was ideal for blooding the new innocent simmer. What a wicked sense of humour some people have }( Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). September 20, 200322 yr "Fortunately, the storm has now weakened and is now classed as a tropical depression"A tropical depression isn't much fun either. I was living in Brisbane in 1974 when a tropical depression dumped 580mm (23 inches) of rain in 3 days on the city and 1,300mm (52 inches)in 5 days in the main river catchments - two weeks later the floodwaters subsided and life started to get back to normal. You haven't lived until chest deep in water you are passed by a tree branch carrying a nice big Brown Snake looking for an opportunity to get off. September 20, 200322 yr Hi All,Well, Isabel is probably close to history now but I can tell you, it was no fun taking off from KIAD (yes, for real) on thursday - VERY bumpy!I guess we were one of the last planes to take off (SK926 at 1600), and if SAS hadn't brought the departure forward from 1730, I don't think we would have gone anywhere... The wind and rain was really intensifying the last hour before boarding and everyone was getting a bit anxious. At the next gate, they were waiting for an arriving aircraft (delayed), so they were very happy when it arrived. I do believe they turned that MD-90 (or -80) around in less than 30 minutes, because when we lined up for our take-off, that plane was already gone!Just a story from the real world...BRGDSSven Sorensen, EKCH
September 21, 200322 yr Moderator I don't suppose it is and from your description of a close encounter with a brown snake I'm glad I live here and not there!I did live in Sydney 40 years ago as an immigrant from England but my father didn't like the heat and humidity so we came back home. Never saw a snake but I did get close to a few nasty spiders. Give me England's green and pleasant fields any day.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). September 22, 200322 yr Moderator Wolfgang,Winds right in the eye (centre) of a hurricane are allways calm! ;-)I know which is why I included this in my original message...Could it just be that the eye is over the airport but if that was the case wouldn't the upper winds also be light?Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England).
