Nvidia Getting Out of Graphics Business!

Featured Replies

:-eek Holy cow! http://www.legionhardware.com/html/doc.php?id=261&p=3Comments? I've never been an Nvidia fan but I don't think this is good for consumers. I just hope ATI doesn't sit on their laurels now :( -Max Cowgill

Did you read that page? It says "The NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun made it quite clear that the graphics industry would no longer be the primary focus point of the company."If that's not a sign of getting out of the graphics industry (or at least the high-end) I don't know what is.-Max Cowgill

Sorry i just had a quick browse, i am still at work :-lol

I doubt that they'll be getting out of the GPU business completely, Max. Clearly, with what has been going on with them the past year or so, they continue to put resources toward other products. They no longer wish to be the "defacto" leader in gaming hardware. Not enough profit margin for a company like nVidia. And you're right... none of this bodes well for us.

I seem to remember a certain other former #1 graphics company announcing something very similar a few years ago after a few bad products coughS3cough. -Max Cowgill

Up until recently, nVidia has been a one trick pony - video cards. Then, they became a two trick pony with the motherboard chipsets. Now, it looks as though they are just going to expand their product offerings more. Their press conference was designed to relay that nVidia isn't just for us computer game geeks anymore. :-) I would be very *VERY* surprised if nVidia bailed out of the video graphics card market anytime within the next 2 or 3 years. If that were the case, it would be akin to Creative Labs bailing on sound cards to make only MP3 players. Although I am a current ATI owner, I would not worry about the state of nVidia affairs. The reports of their video card death have been greatly exaggurated (sp). ...and I look forward to the continued pressure they place on the 3D card market as a whole. Besides - wouldn't another revenue stream into the company probably BENEFIT the nVidia R&D labs cranking out these new cards?! -Greg

Also look at how both companies (ATI and nVidia) stocks have been doing lately. While nVidia has been on a bumpy down turn ATI has been on a very steady grow. So chances are nVidia has been getting a lot of suggestions from their stock holders to make some changes to get the companies stock value back to were it was. ATI's stock ticker is ATYTnVidia's stock ticker is NVDANP

FS is not the primary focus point of Microsoft but it doesn't mean they are getting our of the flight simulation business. Why not wait until NVidia clarify their position since speculative comments in the meantime are only scaremongering.David

XGI is coming on strong. No need to worry about lack of competition. http://www.xgitech.com/products/products_duo.htm . So is S3 http://www.tech-report.com/etc/2003q3/delt...me/index.x?pg=1 . So ATI will have some competition the way it looks. Nvidia is done in the high end graphics market and they need to do something else. They'll always sell graphics cards; just not high end cards. In the GPU race, Cut and Run seems to be their strategy before they end up in Fourth Place. and their credibility is shot. Their motherboard products are good though. Asus has went ATI. Card Manufacturers are rumored to be abandoning Nvidia and going ATI. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11776 . ATI has been hammering Nvidia in the marketshare. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11054

"Why not wait until NVidia clarify their position since speculative comments in the meantime are only scaremongering."nVidia has made their plans perfectly clear during the past year. Go ahead and keep hoping if you wish. From my perspective, they're moving on to other endeavors. GPU's will not be their primary market focus.

When MS announced they were moving to ATI for the XBox there was some speculation that nVidia was actively seeking a buyer for the video chip business. Time will tell but I think you're right, the heyday for nVidia gaming graphics appears to be over.Doug

Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. Klaatu barada nickto.

>FS is not the primary focus point of Microsoft but it doesn't>mean they are getting our of the flight simulation business.>>Why not wait until NVidia clarify their position since>speculative comments in the meantime are only scaremongering.>>DavidDavid, your analogy is comparing apples and oranges. Nvidia literally has two product lines: GPUs, and mobo chipsets. MS has so many different software titles and PC peripherals to lose their market share in any one field would hardly affect the company (other than OS/office). These are not speculative comments. Read the quote. The CEO of Nvidia said GPUs would no longer be their primary focus. This is just business speak for "we concede defeat." -Max Cowgill

David is right. You said:"The CEO of Nvidia said GPUs would no longer be their primary focus."So? That does not mean, as your deceptive thread title specifically states, that they are getting out of the graphics business at this time. Put a spin on it by calling it "business speak," or whatever else you want to call it, but you really don't know, do you? And neither do I. Either way, you got the attention that you wanted by that deceptive title.

Post really is quite twisted and is on about the same level as the National iquirer three headed alian type of trash at your favorite gociery. "I've never been an Nvidia fan"A fan?My favorite Clipping and cutoff transistor is UMC! They come in bright Brown! :-lol
