nVidia Control Panel

Featured Replies

Hi. I know I have seen at least one post (perhaps not in AVSIM, I don't recall) which answers this question, but after quite some time Googling and searching the forums here I haven't located it. Apologies if I am duplicating threads....I have always set the nVidia Control Panel advanced settings (AA, AF etc. etc.) by instinct, following the desriptions of what each feature does and nVidia's recommendations. Now I have just had my new FS PC delivered, maybe someone could kindly say/repeat what might be regarded as the best settings in the nVidia CP/Advanced settings, (GPU = GTX 470: full PC specs as per my signature below). I only use this PC for FS9 and FSX (but 99% FS9) so the settings should be selected for what works best for FS. Incidentally, I have always found that I need to set AA in FS, as well as for the graphics card to avoid getting jagged lines. Do others agree?I have never used nHancer, but doubtless will investigate that once I have the new PC set up with my FS9 reinstated as I want it. One step at a time. (Is it true that the nVidia Control Panel doesn't work in FSX? I have just read that on this forum).Thank you folks..Martin

Yes, thanks, I'll keep that for later, but that's re. nHancer. I was looking for nVidia Control Panel advanced settings..Martin

That is because Nvidia cards (for the most part) won't enable AA in Flightsim, via its Control Panel without nHancer. Even then, it won't work using the Default profile in nHancer, you have to create a new profile for FS.If you are using the newest Nvidia drivers, you need to install the Nvidia software (the name escapes me) instead of nHancer. It is nvidia Inspector

My answer to that question is yes and no. Here's my experience with AA and FS2004.Keep in mind I'm running older nVidia drivers and still use XP for my FS2004 dedicated PC.My Yes answer:After I installed nVidia drivers I had this problem:Anti-aliasing works only in full Screen mode and you MUST have Anti-aliasing CHECKED in FS2004. Any changes made via the nVidia Control Panel have no effect. The reason why you can't change AA settings in the control panel is because of the default "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile that nVidia installs. My No answer:If you delete the default "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile that nVidia installs, you can have complete control over FS2004 using the nVidia control Panel. I have deleted the default "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile and do not have AA checked within FS2004 and now control AA via the nVidia control panel. Am I correct in deleteing the "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile? For me yes.Nhancer is a great tool to aid with AA like others have mentioned, however, I didn't install it on my dedicated FS2004 PC because I keep my FS2004 PC clean of (extra/unnecessary) software that installs extra services etc. That all said, you are dealing with newer nVidia drivers so things are very different as posted in this thread: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/317837-why-do-i-get-jagged-edges/
It might be your issue, and it may not. All I know is anti-aliasing is a strange dog.Because I don't know what changes have been made with the new Nvidia drivers I really can't comment too much on your issue. However, I fixed my anti-aliasing problem by deleting the default "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile that nVidia drivers installed. Was it the correct thing to do? For me yes. I installed nHancer (on my test system) only to delete the "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile and note the changes made. Because my dedicated FS2004 hard drive only has Windows XP and FS2004 installed, I did not install nHancer on it. Keep in mind, what I'll share with you is based on older Nvidia drivers, and Windows XP, so things maybe very different for you. What I did:1. Installed nHancer on my test system.2. Deleted the "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile and noted changes made to my system.3. Manually delete the "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile on my "FS2004" hard drive (didn't install nHancer).Nvidia profiles are stored in a file called "nvapps.xml" found here c:\WINDOWS\system32\nvapps.xml. (you can edit this file with notepad)Also profile info is stored in the registry. To manually delete the "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile without using nHancer:First make a backup copy of file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\nvapps.xml Edit file: nvapps.xml using notepad and delete this section:</PROFILE> <PROFILE Label="MS Flight Simulator 2004"> <APPLICATION Label="FS9.exe"/> <PROPERTY Label="aa_behavior_flags" Value="0x00000001" Default="0x00000001" Itemtype="predefined"/> <PROPERTY Label="multichip_rendering_mode" Value="0x0240000D" Default="0x0240000D" Itemtype="predefined"/> <PROPERTY Label="af_default" Value="0x00000010" Default="0x00000001"/> <PROPERTY Label="aniso_optimization" Value="0x00000000" Default="0x00000000"/> <PROPERTY Label="aniso_selector" Value="0x10000000" Default="0x00000000"/> <PROPERTY Label="aniso_sample_optimization" Value="0x00000000" Default="0x00000000"/> <PROPERTY Label="d3d_negative_lod_bias_status" Value="0x00000001" Default="0x00000000"/> <PROPERTY Label="aa_default" Value="0x00000026" Default="0x00000000"/> <PROPERTY Label="aa_selector" Value="0x20000000" Default="0x00000000"/> </PROFILE>nHancer also deleted a few sections in my registry. If you click start-run and type: regedit you can view profile information and delete it manually. Before playing in the registry, I'd make an image of your hard drive first, and then export your registry so you can restore it if needed.Keep in mind playing with the registry can cause serious problems, so you may not try this. Perform this at your own risk.Open up the registry using the command regedit. Once in the Registry Editor, Click File-Find and search for: FS9.exe:D3DNow Click File-Export and save this section to your desktop in case you want to restore the changes we're going to make.On the right pane you should see:FS9.exe:D3D_1657484FS9.exe:D3D_3092828FS9.exe:D3D_4073838FS9.exe:D3DOGL_049594848FS9.exe:D3DOGL_049594848FS9.exe:D3DOGL_049594848FS9.exe:D3DOGL_049594848Right click on each line and delete. You have just manually deleted the "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile. You can now use the nVidia control panel (Global settings) to control Anti-Aliasing for FS2004.If you want to restore the changes we just made above:Copy back the nvapps.xml file you made a copy of before editing it.Double click on the registry.reg backup file you created before deleting the lines above.RJ
(Is it true that the nVidia Control Panel doesn't work in FSX? I have just read that on this forum).
I bought FSX, but do not use it so can't comment.RJ

Thank you for the replies so far (keep 'em coming folks, esp. re. fully functioning GTX4 drivers in FS - if such a thing exists!!; I did find some good drivers for my old 8700 nVidia card). Never heard of nvidia Inspector - will investigate immediately. So many people swear by (at??) nHancer that I sort of assumed I'd end up installing it - but maybe not? Maybe someone could comment on nvidia Inspector v. nHamcer in FS9 (FSX).Re. AA, I have it set at x16_Q in nVidia & trilinear in FS9. In Full Screen all lines are nice and smooth. FPS at the moment (unlimited) is 60fps - but I am still at the out-of-the-box stage so by the time I get all my addons reinstalled it will be a less than that. May have to reduce AA if it's a lot less. (My old machine gave me a big increase in fps if I changed AA from x8 to x4 - but I was running on a 17" screen at 1920x1200 which hardly needed any AA. Now I am on a 28" monitor (and another 22" for FSNavigator), still at 1920x1200, so will need more AA power I guess). Thanks again,Martin

Ok. You say nVidia Inspector instead of nHancer? Seems they do quite different things, no??M.

Yes and the Inspector is much easier and faster to set. The results are very good too.Get the Inspector here: http://download.orbmu2k.de/download.php?id=51And it's a good idea to follow Nick's guide on how to configure it properly: http://www.simforums.com/forums/fsx-and-nhancer-settings-for-new-drivers-updated_topic36586.htmlHave fun! :(

Hi. I downloaded the nVidia Inspector, but according to the post, it only really works in FSX? Have you installed it successfully for FS9?Martin

Of course, works fine. Just give it a try. :(

Hi.. installed the nVidia Inspector and started following the guide. The instructions in the simforums post you gave me Rafal are for FSX though. I expect the settings for FS9 would need to be different? I'll keep Googling for FS2004 settings (no luck so far), but if you know of a post giving recommended FS2004 settings maybe you could send me a link? Thanks.Martin

Not really. If you read the guide carefully you will see this statement: 'You can use the same method for the MS Flight Simulator 2004 profile too'I did follow it and everything is working fine in my FS9.
