Sound Crackling, DPC latency and other Problems

Featured Replies

Hello,i know there are zillions of posts covering this, i already did a lot of (re)search over the last few days. Some people (*******, nick) have awesome tweaks. But i tried them all and i still have the problem. The problem is that i have texture flickering issues and very bad sound crackling and "DPC latency" issues. Here's my hardware:Win7, 4GB memory, GTX 275 w/ 896MB, latest drivers, dfi X38 motherboard, Q6600 CPU overclocked to 3600 ghz. The system is tested stable (prime, OCCT) and i use it for YEARS.My system can run any other game fine and i dont have any issues with other games.I have FSX Accel, FSGenesis, UTX, GEX, Rex, Orbx, VFRGermanyWhen i run the "DPC latency tool" i get insane DPC latency of 16000uS and higher, especially if i look around. The sound is crackling and popping.I did EVERYTHING i read on the forums, all the tweaks by ******* and Nick. I used affinitymask(s), bufferpools.I tested with two different sound cards (realtek internal, audigy 2 ZS), both with new drivers AND with old drivers. I tested with sound OFF and sound cards deinstalled. I tested with many devices deactivated as told in DPC latency tool. The issue persists and i am sure its NOT related to sound, actually i think that the crackling sound is only a *result* of the high DPC latency and the sound drivers itself are not the culprit. If anyone can help, very appreciated. Today i will make a bootable, virgin "Win7" USB stick to see whether the issue also persists on a new, fresh Win7. I might also test under fresh XP/Vista. I am sad since i installed so many addons and instead of a nice flying experience i get technical problems and its almost unplayable. Seriously, i spend more time tweaking than actually flying.Thank you!

update:I now installed a new, fresh Win7 on a separate HD, and after a little fiddling could test FSX with this new, untouched Win7.The problem is still there. The extreme DPS latency seems most apparent when objects are loaded (into video memory?), eg. by looking around. (If i just stand still and look straight without any change of what's on the screen it is usually in the green. But of course, as soon as something happens i get crazy spikes)

I now installed a fresh copy of XP Pro 64 for testing and basically reinstalled FSX and all the addons. This is a Windows install solely for FSX...I used *******' new tool and different configs, but the problem is more or less still the same, no matter whether i am on Win7 or XP x64.The problem (DPS latency) seems VERY closely and directly related to autogen, especially the trees and MAYBE the internal FSX buffers respective fetching objects (or filling) from the buffer. It seems that the high latency is caused by FSX "loading" those objects into (video?) memory (bufferpools setting??) and that the bus is simply getting overloaded with data causing the stutters and high DPC latency. If anyone has more ideas..please let me know. I tried as good as any tweak possible. In the worst case scenario i have 16000uS DPS latency and in the "best case" scenario i "only" have 3000-4000. As i understand, it shouldnt even be higher than 100.

I remember reading a while back that setting a very high bufferpool MAY help or eliminate this. I would start with a value of 300000000 and see what happens. You will know when you have gone too high as your aircraft will look as if it is being taken apart and sold for parts. I think the optimum value was 400000000.edit: found this infoSOUND CRACKING AND DISTORTION – SMOOTHER FLIGHT Based on research done by Sargeski on sound crackle issues and latency, he discovered raising bufferpools on a 1GB single core Nvidia card will eliminate such sound problems. They are related to high autogen slider and latency on buss. To resolve the issue the user MUST have a 1GB SINGLE CORE Nvidia card such as the GTX 280 or GTX 285:[bufferpools]poolsize=490000000 <--- that will be somewhere between 450 and 490MBNOTE:A side effect to this discover is that larger VM cards which DO NOT display the sound crackle issue may RAISE bufferpools for a smoother flight result. For larger VM memory cards (1GB) this value can be anywhere from 100000000 (100MB) to 400000000 (400MB)It is a ‘trial and error” setting. Most find 200000000 (200MB) works very well. Jim

will try, although i already tried several values yesterday. (I only have a 896MB card but i can clearly monitor that it never uses more than 400MB-500MB video memory, so i could use up to 384MB for testing)In regards to bufferpools: Do i actually have to have "UsePools=1" so bufferpools is actually in effect? I hardly see anyone using this parameter although many use "Bufferpools"?!

UsePools=1 is the default value so you don't need to have this setting in your fsx.cfg. Just add the BUFFERPOOLS section and your Poolsize setting:[bUFFERPOOLS]Poolsize=300000000and let us know if you still have problems with the sound.

I personally don't use high PoolSize values, HOWEVER *IF* your setup or particular flying requires it, then you can effectively use STALE_BUFFER_THRESHOLD to a LOWER value so that vertex data in the pool is 'cleaned' faster so it doesn't fill so fast.Default is 60 (frames)

Based on my experience, the crackling sound issue has nothing to do with FSX. This anomaly exists without FSX running, it seems to be windows 7 related. I don't see how you can fix it with some FSX tweaks. It is a very annoying issue and I don't think a fix has been found yet.

yankee,as you can see i also installed XP64 for testing on another partition, solely for testing and seeing whether it improves. But the problem is the same.According to "LatencyMon" which is way better than DPC Checker, the issue *has* to do with graphics drivers/directx. So i am testing a whole range of Geforce drivers already, but still all having the same problem. There are about 100 Millions reasons given online what causes this, including CPU/Processor power management, GPU power management, Chipset/Hardware, Vista/Win7, drivers etc...but none i tried until now really showed that it improved. As a last resort i can flash a new Bios to my board and see whether it improves, respective experiment a bit more with the buffersize values. Otherwise, it is something caused solely by FSX and the ONLY solution would be setting autogen etc. all the way down.

I personally use a 90000000 Poolsize which works very well on my system. Frames locked at 30 fps with FPS_Limiter. I have very smooth flights with excellent image quality. No need to spend time tweaking. Just relax my friend :(
latency.jpgUlf,it's not a question about some theoretical tweaking out of boredom :) In fact, i stumpled upon this issue because i had very annoying stutters and crackles, which made playing almost impossible. (This ESPECIALLY after i installed Aerosoft's Airbus X.) Nothing else than distorted and crackling sounds! So i did some googling and found this DPC latency issues - the above red bars are proof that something serious is going on.Don't get me wrong, i could of course sit back and just ignore those pops and crackles...but it's kind of difficult :)Also..the above shot was just taken with *******'s tweaks, buffersize 90000000 + external FPS limiter. You see i dont even have any complex airplane loaded. Bios update also didnt do a thing. LAST resort would be testing with my gfx card in the other slot maybe.

I have had crackling issues, and trawled all the posts and requested support from various providors etc. It did my head in for a while. I treid everything, new sound card, up date BIOS, tweaks. Non of it worked!!It is very annoying and I Never 100% solved it, however I now have it managed it to the point where I am no longer annoyed by it.. Its 95% fixed.I used to mainly get the crackles with some aircraft such asLevel D 767Aerosft Airbux XNever with any PMDG products. What I have done to pretty much get rid of the crackles is to...Lower sound quality by right clicking speaker icon at bottom right of screen in playback deveices and any where else you can. With regards the LVL D767 I never could stop it with that Aircraft so I searched around for different sound sets, and I actually found one that IMO is much better than the original, I replaced it and since then no crackles!!! I also replaced a couple of sound files on the Airbus X too and that helped. Its weird becase the sound problem sound files for me work fine on other peoples machines.Hope that helps

Georg123,If you do not have a driver causing the the latency, then the latency is hardware related and more than likely the problem lies within the motherboard. If using a High BP value does not help to reduce your latency the only other option you have is to reduce your autogen within FSX which will have a direct result on the load of the buss (I notice alot of autogen trees in your posted picture). Trying to push FSX too hard will make this issue worse. I discovered this tweak because I had the same problem as you. There was no magic bullet video driver or DirectX update that would correct the problem. The only way that I ever completely eliminated the issue was to use a different motherboard. And so we do not get confused. There is a difference between having annoying crackles and pops in the sound and sound crackling and pops coupled with stutters the latter of which happens on a saturated buss with high DPC latency.I hope you eventually get it sorted so you can enjoy FSX in its glory. ;)Regards,Bob

The figure you may need to try may be much higher as I recall, at least give a 400MB BP a try, the other post was not 400 but 40+, try a full 400000000Maybe post your cfg so someone can spot something and offer helpThe only time this was an issue for me was when I started using the Mackie Mr5 powerd monitors and the cheap cables I used picked up RF from the video cable, better cables solved the problem.
