Clouds and FPS

Featured Replies

Have my fps locked at 25 and for the most part it stays there no matter what ac I fly. My problems start when I want to load weather. FPS sometimes drop into single didgits. Any tweaking other than just the normal fs weather settings I can try. Thanks

Hi it could be many thing's so it will be difficult to figure out on whats dragging down frame rates clouds have always put a burden on fps but it shouldn't be that low what are your system specs?

I found that using ActiveSky 6.5 with the dxt3 clouds option coupled with "render to texture" in FS9 improves cloud performance a lot. It's really the only thing I've found that helps.Cheers.....................Todd

Are you using Active Sky cloud textures or some other addon cloud textures like REX or HDEv2 clouds? System Specs would also help in this case...

Just running a laptop w 2.3 ghz duel core, 3gig ddr3. Video card is the setback, its a radeon 4250. Just got activesky 6.5 so don't understand how it intergrates with activeSky graphics (Still reading) Do I need to load a new theme up each time or will the two intergrate depending on the weather. Found on problem I was have is that in AS Graphices it was set to 512x512 textures. Lowed that and checked dxt3 and not getting as bad of framerate hit.

Yeah, sorry I forgot about the size option. I use 128x128. To me the difference is not that significant. Compared to the performance improvements anyway. I've never messed with the themes that much. I just use "weather influenced". I also limit layers to 5.Cheers.................Todd

Download PABLO DIAZ HDEv2 clouds from Avsim. I use the 256x256 option, and limit ActiveSky 6.5 to 3 layers.Works well on my old system which i havent updated yet. steve

Ok, I went ahead and got his clouds. Before I install them do I need to do anything with Active Sky? Do I need to tell it to restore FS Textures? Thanks
Whatever weather system or clouds you use (I use PD's) the formula remains the same: more clouds=less FPSless clouds=more FPSyou cannot change it.vololiberista
Couldnt agree more... The more amazing stat is what clouds will do to system temps. I see my Video Card go from 36-38C without clouds to 44-45C when the clouds load. So not only is it cutting our FPS but it is really working the system incredibly hard. a 7C degree jump just from loading clouds is a 46F Degree jump! That is crazy...-P

Have a Wonderful Day

Nope, but I'd start with the cumulus01.bmp found in the "5-Cumulus-LOW (256x256)" folder first as the full resolution "VERY HIGH" variation will probably bring your system to it's knees with an Active Sky cloud depiction. I don't know what format the LOW-FI version is in, but I prefer 32 bit with mips and then I turn off "render to texture" in the FS9.cfg so my panels don't flicker. I also resize all the cirrus clouds to 512x512 if they're not already, but they don't impact your framerates the way cumulus01.bmp does. I keep my resized/reformatted cloud textures in a .zip file that I can extract to FS9\Texture whenever I want to restore my favorite cloud set. This way I can experiment to my heart's content with other cloud/sky addons and if I don't like them I just extract my .zip file and I'm back where I started.Jim
