What piracy? The lawsuit was in response to three major Record Labels not paying in full the royalties owed to the song writers and/or the producers. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with "piracy..." :( It is no different than if your employer failed to pay you for your full time worked...

Yeah except you own the copyrights to the work you produced. So I hardly see them as employers but pirates and copyright infringers. And if they are employers which they'd never admit, they owe back taxes.

Well, depending on the deal an artist signs with the recording company, many artists do not own the copywright of their work. I haven't studied the process lately, but in the past an artist would contract with a recording company to produce a certian number of recordings in a certian amount of time. The artist would get a lump sum up front. From that the artist pays for production of the albums. This is so expensive that it is possible to have a hit album but no money left over to live on. The artist gets loyallties, but not always very much. The company owns everything. Major artist can get a better deal, but the many lesser ones can not.Bob

Often times artists are given the feeling that everything is fine and dandy when it reality isn't. A lot of times they are given false hope by a label even willing to represent them, instead of understanding that the label's only interest is the artitst/song not being in competitor's hands. The days of actual artist development are long gone, and if you aren't a success within the first month forget about it, it's not going to happen. And if the material is somewhat average, they're not rushing to get a contract drawn up as that cost's the label money. Hence the "pending list" status.Given that's the climate they work in, I find it sad a label would go the extra mile to deny even the folks that have made them money. Hopefully US artists can recover some money next, because I doubt all this was dreamed up in Canada, but an observed practice in the US. After all 3 out of 4 of these are american companies.

Okay, I had to read and re-read your original comment to parse out just whom you were referring to with the reference to "these idiots"...As Bobby has written above though, it all depends on the contract entered into between the artist/producer and the record label. In any case though, it seems that those named in the suit had -without admitting it of course- re-released originally licensed/contracted material beyond that which was covered by the original contract, and failed to pay the royalties due to the artist/producers based on sales of the re-released recordings. In that very restricted sense then, I suppose one might call that a case of "piracy..." :(

In this case "artist" assuming this means performer, is not at issue. It is rather the sound recording mechanical license that is needed from the songwriter. I guess in Canada the processing of these licenses is handled by two organizations, dealing with the "record companies" on behalf of the songwriters. Apparently these organizations and the record companies have put together a method, called the "pending list" whereby the record company can make a sound recording/phonorecord or audio-visual work and later work out who the correct copyright holder is to receive royalty payment. The issue is that there is a claim that this "pending list" is not being resolved in a timely manner. The settlement resolves this claim.scott s..

WOW...How is this a Flight Sim Topic :( All the money making Canadian Artists go to the USA anyways....One of our biggest USA exports are Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, Nellie Furtado, Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain...etc etc etc. Only we don't get any money for them in return. So if you are a Canadian with any marketing potential you wouldn't be signing with a Canadian record company anyways. Canadian record companies have always been tough on Canadian Talent so this is why many of our artists go to the USA. I don't think a new law would make much difference. This law looks like it will only be paying some background writers for contributions in the past. Probably long overdue

Pretty much I doubt anyone famous. But for a 45 million dollar settlement that's a lot of people who have been wronged.
