Since I have never used VATSIM, I hope you are not proposing that I should help to pay for your VATSIM/I'Net time.In my part of Canada, the electric meter spins faster when I switch on a light as does the gas meter if I turn up the thermostat. That's USER PAY. Keeping warm and out of the dark is a higher social objective than playing a game on the net.Why should I'Net time be any different? Somebody has to pay for all that fibre optic cable- how about the users?AR
i forgot a key word in my original statment i meant to say "I think that would affect a lot more than just the PERSONAL internet user on his home laptop."Lets lose a few jobs here and there, Lets not allow so many people to use the internet= lose a few more jobs or pay decraeses, thats where it starts, better yet lets create another recession for us, why the heck not, the one we are are recovering from was a good time for all, lets do it all over again.P.S if there really is a need to raise internet fees then raise the monthly fees on internet but still without a cap, then one can decide if they are willing to pay X amount of dollars for internet (Yes I know that internet is not a necesity, and if it were either starve or internet, It is obvious what is more important, But the rate we are going at when it comes to rate hikes on everything, well all i got to say is LOOK OUT, there is a S&*t storm on the way again)I know it sounds far fetched over a little issue like this, But its got to start somewhere.

he makes, in a year, EIGHT TIMES what the average US worker will make IN THEIR LIFETIME of work (assuming most people will work about 45 years).it will take TWENTY FIVE people working for a combined 1100 YEARS to earn the money stephenson has made over the past FOUR years.at what point, AT WHAT POINT, is it too much?remember - stephenson is making 'chump change' when measured against his peers.--
Doesn't really matter what he is paid- what matters is what he does with it. Mr. Stephenson still only wears one pair of trousers at a time. I'm sure his trousers provide much needed work for his tailor. What counts most is what he does with his pay. I'm relieved to think that he may perhaps provide some needed capital for your employer and so enable you to keep your job and feed your family. And there may be some autoworkers in Detroit who owe their paycheque to the purchase of a shiny limousine so Mr Stephenson can get to his office on time.Money isn't kept hidden away in a tin can- it's used to create jobs and wealth for all of us.AR

Resources need to be priced to reflect both the cost plus the value that the user perceives. For the past several years the cost of the net has been artificially low because many, many companies who built the networks a dozen years ago, went bankrupt. To try to fill up the available network fibre optic cables, the prices have been set artificially low. But as the time approaches when new, extra capacity is needed, low and behold that will cost really big bucks. That investment has to be paid back by users such as you and me. And I don't want to pay for full-time, super high speed service. Guess it's your turn to pay the difference if that's what you want!AR
And I don't want to pay for full-time, super high speed service.
And on my end I would much rather pay a set amount if i so chose and not worry about going over limit and getting a massive bill at the end of the month. All in all its a toss of a coin, For you a cap would work without having to pay extra for high speed full time internet, For me i would rather pay a set amount wether i use it or not and not have o worry about how muched i used. So for some it would work, for others it wouldnt. Lets wait and see :( P.S I still really like your three monitor setup :( B) P.S.S I still praise JSkorna's support on active sky :( B)

Wait and see-----A very wise response!!

looks like the CRTC is reviewing their usage based billing decision. One small step in the right direction, lets hop it keeps going in the rright direction.Am i correct when i read and understand that in Canada we pay a lot more than other countries for internet service as is without a data cap????

Hi,Don't know. Pull some quotes from Comcast, AT&T, Wide Open West, and start converting to CND to see!Make sure to include the equipment rental charges and taxes.

If you go on "popular media" sites, like Sports Illustrated or CNN, you can see one reason for the problems. More and more, they are just making video part of the basic pages. Some of this is just worthless advertising, and some of it is the only way they provide the actual content. Why do I want to sit through a 30 second commercial and then watch a 2-minute video of a newscaster sitting at a desk reading something to me? I can read it myself in 20 seconds, if they'd just provide the text, but many of their customers think somehow that the video is a better product. If I were paying by the byte, I wouldn't be visiting sites with gratuitous, useless video.

All those commercials keep the $$ coming in for those sites which helps keep things unlimited.

... a 2-minute video of a newscaster sitting at a desk reading something to me? I can read it myself in 20 seconds,
because reading is becoming a 'lost art.'. podcasts and video are the preferred methods by a growing percentage of the population. i see this in two direct ways -
  • the number of questions in a support forum for items that are clearly outlined in the manual. i'm not talking about a one-line sub-sub-sub-point ... but in the paragraphs of the first pages. there is also the increasingly common negative response by the OP when the page/paragraphed are referenced. it seems the OP can't be asked to open a PDF.
  • the number of hits a new video will produce v. new written content. i see this in two different industries that i have direct involvement: FS addons and sailboat manufacturing. a site update with text content will create the number that come from pictures (better), or video (best).

i love a multi-page manual. i love to read. i like the feeling of a book. two of the top five places for me to spend my time are libraries and bookstores. i read 2-3 books a week. usually read 5-6 books at one time. i own over 700 books.--

I note that Verizon, today, announced it "will slow speeds for data hogs". So says CNN. Apparently this will apply to 1,000,000 customers- the top 5% of data users.Don't ask me to interpret this info- just reporting what I read.I gather that ATT has already announced moves in this direction.Despite what Canadian politicians may say publicly, we will simply have to wait and see.I do recall reading that King Canute of mythological fame, was unable to hold back the ocean tides, despite popular desire.AR

just watching the canadian news and sounds like there is a good chance this may be dead in the water, and I SO hope it is, but as said above we will have to wait and see.

Apparently, it was the Prime Minister himself who made the decision to freeze prices. That's fairly conclusive evidence of an election coming soon- after all he is supposedly a free enterpriser. We really need to watch what happens AFTER an election. The laws of supply and demand still remain. At the moment, my so called High Speed I'Net slows to a crawl many days at lunch/early afternoon- I assume because the facilities are choked. Perhaps some higher costs for the "hogs" might free up some reasonable service level for we folks who use relatively little.AR

is say a 25gb cap or whateber the case may be really improve peak times??

Don't know. But if the Telcos/ISPs are not allowed to achieve a satisfactory ROI (return on investment) they are not likely to invest further in facilities to improve things.Investors in telecom stocks/bonds will ultimately decide what ROI is satisfactory- not politicians. It would appear that the arrival of NetFlix has perhaps put the cat in with the pigeons!AR
