REX or ULTIMATE WEATHER FX?

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been brought up in other topics before but I could do with getting down to the nitty gritty and straight to the point:As the title says, I am thinking of getting either REX or Ultimate Weather FX by Zinertek for mainly the weather side of it although other aspects may be a possibilty. I have already got installed Zinertek's Ultimate Water Advanced which I quite like so I wouldn't really need any other water textures, unless of course they were a lot better. Both of these products look really good and I am bit torn as to which one to go for. The thing I don't really want to do is having to mess around with the weather settings which I don't know if these products have, I just want to load up FS9, select my flight and fly with really good weather conditions without all the palava of having to press this, do that, alter this etc etc etc.I used to have Flight Environment by Flight 1 installed on my previous PC which I am thinking of possibly re-installing but even with that you had to tweak around with the settings which to be honest, and I know it sounds lazy, but I just cannot be bothered to do.So, the bottom line is this; out of REX and Ultimate weather FX, do any of them have the option to just 'install and fly' or do they both (or any other products on the market come to think of it) have the requirements to make adjustments? Or do I stay with Flight Environment? In my opinion, I am quite inclined to go with Zinertek's products, mainly because I have Ultimate Water Advance already installed and am thinking of getting Night Environment 2010 as well but any comments or suggestions would be greatly welcome!

Hi,Ultimate Weather FX is a texture program only and is not a weather program:http://www.fspilotshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=1925REX does have a weather portion. For an easy to use, well established weather program, you might want to consider our Active Sky v6.5 which is still for sale.FE is not a weather program either. So now I am confused: Are you looking for an environmental texture program or a 3rd party weather program?

I've never had Ultimate Weather FX before. However I highly recommend REX. An all-in-one package covers almost every possible textures :( @JSkorna: I'm curious about "still for sale" You are planning to end it soon?

I don't know now, I think you have just confused me! I have had a quick look at Active Sky but I don't know if it's too complicated for my needs, I am not that bothered about having the best weather programme with all high tech features, I just want something that will make a big improvement on the default atmosphere in terms of clouds, rain, snow, dusk, dawn etc and the various shades of sky colours without it being too much, so I guess really I am after a texture programme more than a weather programme although I thought they are were the same but obviously that is not the case.So I think that brings me back to deciding between REX and Ultimate Weather FX. I know everyone raves on about REX but is it that wonderful compared to Zinertek's product? I would be interested to hear if anyone has this installed and what they think of it, better still, if anyone has tried both and what the pros and cons are of each one...

HelloNo comparison, REX is a much better product than Ultimate weather FX.Ultimate Weather FX consists of 250 or so textures while REX is literally Gigabytes of textures both clouds and sky but also water and airport textures + a weather engine if you do not already have one.You really need a good weather engine + good textures.Weather has such a large effect on aviation it is about more than just eye candy. My recommendation would be REX + Active Sky

Just to confuse matters, I use REX (with Overdrive) for my textures, and Ultimate Weather FX for the rain and snow effects (which can't be beat IMHO), Ultimate Water for the ,erm, water and AS6.5 for the weather. :( I tried ASE but could never get it stable enough to keep me happy, so back to the ol' AS6.5.Cheers, SLuggy

I do not have a signature. Why are you reading this?

Hi!I would recommend REX also - not alone has it got great and varied weather textures, but it's water textures are also excellent. I don't have Ultimate Weather or Ultimate Water to compare with REX, but I am very happy with REX as an overall package in terms of the realism it adds to the environment.Bill

OK thanks guys, I will have a good think about which product to go for and decide over the weekend. What I don't really want to be doing though as I said initially is to spend loads of time having to make various adjustments. I want to be able to load up FS9 and fly with great looking environment. I think I would rather have one package which covers everything, rather than get various add-ons for certain features, so I think REX might be the winning contender. Although I must admit Ultimate Weater FX does look good when it comes to the rain and snow effects from the pictures I have seen.Oh so many decisions to make!
