Need advice on cooling

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I need some quick advice as I am going to upgrade my system even further. So, I have an Intel i7 920 at stock speeds at the moment. I had it overclocked at 4ghz, but people here suggest that one install FSX and windows on a non overclocked system and so I saved my BIOS and now I cannot load the profile to get it back to the 4ghz setting I had before.....anyway......I have a Geforce GTX 470 and 6GB Corsair 1600mhz RAM running 8-8-8-24. So what I am proposing is a new cabinet as things are VERY cramped at hot in here. When I was at 4ghz the CPU toped out at 72C and GPU is topping out at nearly 90C just with FSX. Case: http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=6606A new Harddrive: Western Digital Velociraptor 300gb 10000rpm. And last, but not least I've been thinking of getting this: http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=407 for my grafics card. Any suggestions or comments? All this comes in at 340eurosThanks,Martin

My rig contains a random selection of computer parts working in perfect harmony....

I hold a EASA fATPL + A320 SIC rating and a FAA CPL with CFI rating.

I have the Zotac AMP GTX 480 and it comes with a Zalman GPU cooler like the one you linked to. Flying in FSX my GTX 480 never gets over 75C and most of the time it never gets over 70C.If you have the room and can spend the extra $50 I would get the HAF932 case rather than the HAF922. This bigger case will give you more airflow and reduce your temps.I think that the Vrap is a good choice for FSX, they have worked well for me.

Thanks,Cool about the GPU cooler. Now it's not the price that wories me it's the sheer size of both the HAF 932 and the X. I belive they both are full towers. I got a mini tower at the moment which baraly fits the X58 MB.

Would recommend an accelero extreme cooler from Arctic Cooling. Got three fans that run a tad slower and very silently, and the cooling is very efficient. Make sure there's room for it, when assembled it takes up three slots.Bjorn

You'll like the 922 as long as you like "gamer" looking cases. I chose my current case because it was a little classier looking and I've found it easier to mod. Cooler Master's mid-towers offer excellent cooling options in the way of fans. Couple that with a front panel fan controller and you are set.

Hi guys,Thanks for the respons. The order is in so in the weekend I'll be pulling my computer apart. Just two quick questions:1) Is it worth reseating the CPU cooler? It's been on for about one year and it's been running clock speeds from 400mhz to 4009mhz. Right now it settles at 68C at 3500mhz. the cooler is a Noctua 2) with the case I mentioned above what is the best way to mount a CPU cooler? In an East to West direction or South to North? that is if u put a compas on the side of the cage and the airflow in that direction. Thanks,Martin

Orient it along the axis of the airflow inside the case, in my case east-west, and I have no elements blocking the flow from the top front case fan.If you're unhappy with performance reapply quality thermal paste and reseat cooler. B

If you are happy with your temps there is no reason to reseat the HSF.Normal airflow in a case is east to west with the HSF fan on the east pushing air through the HS and out the back (west) of the case. Some people do south to north, it is just one of those things that you have to test and see if it really makes a difference in your setup.

If you are running the stock heatsink id look at replacing it while you can they simply are not good enough, get a good heatpipe, i run a redscopion by zigmatek it dropped my temps by 10 degrees, Every bit helps.

Hi Guys,I got my new case and my god it's huge. For the same clock speed the temps are reduced by 6-8C and for the same temp I can now get 4200mhz out of my now one year old i7 920. That is 70C after 1hour prime95 max heat test. vCore: 1.3v. Thanks to all of you. And mjrhealth I am using the Noctua U12P SE with two fans. Last question ;) I am reinstalling windows on monday on the velociraptor. Should I unoverclock it? and if so can I save my settings somewhere? motherboard is Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5. Thanks,Martin

Do you have a front panel controller to recommend? Thanks.

Yes you need to reset your BIOS to the default clock settings before you install the OS. If you know that your OC is 100% rock solid you can get away with it, but to be on the safe side I always install the OS at default settings, this way I do not have to worry about possible problems related to installing an OS on a OC'ed system. I also always install FSX and the first installation of all addons at the default settings.I do not know about a Gigabyte board, if you look in your MB manual it will tell you if there is away to save your current OC settings for later use, there probably is. Since it does not take that long to load them in the BIOS I just have all my OC settings written down in a Word doc and have a hard copy in a note book that I can look at while I reload the settings into BIOS.

If you are talking about a fan controller you can look at them on Newegg and FrozenCPU.http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g34/c17/s817/list/p1/Bay_Devices-Fan_Controllers-High_WattAmp_Controller-Page1.htmlLamptron makes really good ones. When picking one you need to look at the documention that came with your case to see what the fans are rated at and make sure that you get a controller that can handle your fans, same thing with the fan or fans on your HSF.

well....this is my first overclock. I've been running prime95's FPU test for now 7hours, and counting, without any trouble. At the same time I've been running firefox and FS9.....Is there any other benchmark programs that u can recommend?I think it's gone pretty well for my first time.....I can feel an addiction comming. Funny for my 920. Baseclock of 200x21 works, but if I raise it to 201 it crashes (I haven't tried 201 with this higher vcore......might do the trick) Still 4200mhz on air......with these speeds it'll be a while before I go SBMartin
