What size resolution for 32" TV as monitor.

Featured Replies

Hey guys,I recently got hold of an older Teac 32" LCD TV that I thought I might try running FSX on. It will be powered by my 3GB 580 GTX. The TV has both DVI and VGA inputs but is too old for HDMI inputs. So, when I went to hook it up I was surprised with some of the results. Firstly, running via the DVI, the highest resolution I could get out of it was 1240x1024. If running via VGA cable, I can go up to 1600x1200. The TV itself is suposed to be 1920x1080i HDTV. When in FSX, the screen is great but I wanted to check a few things with any others that may have gone through this process before? If I run FSX at 1600x1200 I get a reasonably good wide view (with wideaspect=true) but I do notice that at 50% zoom which is where I like to sit, the guages and displays on most of the glass cockpits become rather difficult to read. Would this be better if I was able to run the TV at 1920x1080 or would it in fact become worse? My very limited understanding of resolutions is that the larger the resolution, the smaller the images on screen essentially become. So am I correct in assuming that if I replaced this monitor with one that could run it at 1920x1080 would the guages be equally as difficult to read?Secondly, I tried hooking up my older 21" Benq display as a second monitor but noticed that the external FPS limiter really struggles to run two monitors at once. I've done some reading about this and many people have suggested to double the limited number of frames - this didn't work for me. What I was wondering is what effect a TH2Go system has with regards to the FPS Limiter? Does FPS Limiter work the same in a TH2Go system as it does for dual monitors? So, in summary, what do you blokes think the ideal resolution for running FSX on a 32" monitor is?Cheers,Kael

Hello, for an lcd monitor you want to run it at it's native panel resolution. I don't know what it is for that tv but it is most likely not going to be 1920x1080. I say this because it says it is capable of 1920x1080i. This is interlaced based on a lower real resolution. I have no idea what it could be though. if you search around with the make/model you will find out and may need to create a custom resolution to get it to run. Your 580 will be way overkill for it as I think the resultion will be more like just over 1000x800.Thanks,Jason

Thanks for the reply Jason, I'm out looking for 32" TVs that run 1920x1080 at the moment. If the picture doesn't look great I'll return it and grab a 27" Benq PC screen.

Airbumps- can't give you a definitive answer re large screen resolution but for comparison- Here is a pic showing FS9 running synched multiple (2D windowed) views across triple (2-17 LCDs,1 CRT) monitors. The outer views are both shifted angularly approx 5.6º to precisely match the width of the monitor bezels. This generates an integrated view approx 45" wide or about 46" on the diagonal. Each monitor is running at 1024x768, so combined resolution is 3072x768. Each monitor is angled to form an arc so as to keep its centre point square to the pilot's eyes and so avoid angular distortion- the same as the curved screen in a theatre. The distance from eye to monitors is approx. 26" and the 45" combined screen width completely fills my entire peripheral vision. It is very important to view a screen nearly square to its surface- try sitting beside your pilot's chair as a visitor would, and the distorted image is very evident. Same goes for the sides of a single very large screen- which then leads to moving it farther away which eliminates the benefits of a wide screen in the first place!!AR

.... humm, very, interesting, so, basically what you telling us that 3 Monitor on TH2go, will generate more realistic optical effect than large HDTV .Yair

Yair- NO - I don't use TH2Go- just two video cards driving triple monitors. Each monitor displays a different FS view: LFwd, Fwd, RFwd to yield a field of view of 3x45º or 135º at 1.0 zoom. To compensate for the bezels, the outer views are each shifted 5.6º - making the total Field of View approx 146º. The monitors (an 18" CRT & 2 17" LCDs) are placed in an arc so the centre point of each is square to my eyes & each is then about 26" away . This produces a Field of View that spans my entire peripheral vision. The best way to describe the effect is to consider how the IMAX theater is configured- best seat in the house is dead centre so all you see is movie screen ahead!Simmers who use a single very large screen cannot get this effect- no wrap around plus the necessity to place the screen far away to avoid graininess in the resolution. For those who may be sceptical- consider how a professional commercial simulator projects triple images onto a curved screen.AR

most 1080i tv's are actually 720 (or 768)p sets. This means they actually run native resolution of 1366 x 768you would need an actual 1080p set to get 1920 x 1080 native resolution. However, I cannot imagine running FS at 1920 x 1080 on a 32 inch screen if you are sitting at a normal 'desk monitor' position. Further away would be ok but then whats the point in getting the bigger screen? At normal desktop distances you would be looking at 1920 x 1080 (or 1200) on a 24" monitor. For 27" Dell does a model that pushes 2560 x 1440 and then upto 30" you are in 2560 x 1600 territory.Personally I am looking at getting an HP ZR30w (30" 2560 x 1600) which will replace my old (but still great) Samsung 213T 21.3" at 1600 x 1200.

You won't go wrong with that, Glenn...I run a similar Dell U3011 30 inch IPS monitor at 2560x1600 and the image quality at that res is fantastic. I'm especially happy with the color saturation and balance that you get from the IPS panel.

Nice to know Bob, especially when you are dropping that kind of money! Thanks. My Samsung is getting on now (PVA panel at 1600x1200) but I don't think I can switch to a large TN panel with only 1080p resolution and poor colour - and whats with all the 16:9 rubbish? 16:10 is a must for me.Looking forward to sitting in front of that 30" when it comes. Have to buy before August as there is a $250 instant rebate at the moment.....keep saving a little bit more......
