LCD screen larger than 30"?

Featured Replies

No, it does not. The FOV at 42" 16:9 is precisely the same as a 22" 16:9... Now if I could just afford three 42" 16:9 LCD HDTV's and Eyefinity... :LMAO:
..or three projectors...  LOL.gif

Guys, I have spent the last hours researching the net trying to find the optimal LCD to purchase. I am looking around the 40 to 42in range. My eyes are about to fall out. I need some help. I have read much about the following:-Input lag: this is apparently a big issue-What type of panel does the LCD have: I understand them to be one of three; S-IPS/H-IPS (In Plane Switching), VA (Vertical Alignment)and TN (Twisted Nematic) panels. The synopsis I found on them was this:1) S-IPS/H-IPS panels are generally considered the best all around panel type, but they are more expensive and very few are made. High end, expensive.2) S-PVA/MVA panels offer better color reproduction and viewing angles than TN panels, have slightly worse response times than TN or S-IPS, offer the best contrast ratios, may suffer from color shifting or input lag and have higher availability than S-IPS panels. Mid range, fair price.3) TN panels are very cheap and have the fastest response times, but suffer from inferior color reproduction, contrast ratios and viewing angles. Low end, inexpensive. Mainly used in purpose made computer LCD monitors, not TV's.So this basically narrows it down to IPS or VA. The Panasonic's are all pretty much IPS from the looks of it. Various other forums are saying Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Vizio and LG are all good. But some also say Sony and Samsung wash out the black color pretty badly. As well, I plan on using an DVI to HDMI adapter to connect it to the PC. When doing this, can you still use your stand alone sound card for audio through your computer speakers? Or must you also route your sound through the TV? If I understand it, you have to run the TV in "game mode".Also want to say of power consumption so would ideally like a LED lcd instead of the standard one. Can I ask what you guys are using and how well it works with FSX? Be real curious to see how some of these LCD's work with FSX.For those interested I learned most of this stuff through this very informative forum, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=166

Count mine as another vote for projectors. I set up one in my dedicated "flight deck" in the basement, and it's performing like a champ. I got an Optoma GT700, which throws a nice, very bright 72-inch image on the wall only 5 feet or so from my face. No worries about radiation from that puppy, and it was definitely vastly cheaper than a monitor that wouldn't have come near to that size.Don't count out projectors when planning your super system!

I have the hardware to run it but am wondering what brands do you all recommend when considering LCD tv greater than thirty inches for use with FSX? I cant find any monitors over thirty inches thus my question. Specifically looking at something around 35". Obviously response time and screen resolution are very important. Thanks
I'm having trouble seeing the why in this. I know lots of people use them, but why? When you do 30" aren't you just going to end up sitting a little farther away from the screen? If you sit in tighter, then you're having to pan your head back and forth to see the whole image, and also isn't image quality then poorer as you are so close to a blown up image? And then there's the increased demand on performance which is very formidable. What's really the draw?Noel

More "life-size" so to speak. As an aside, I am thinking that the Vizio 42" M420NV model is the way to go.

I run a Samsung 32" LED/LCD 1080p TV as my monitor. The resolution of 1920x1080 is just fine. 1920x1080 on a 27" computer monitor will look sharper though as it's packing the same number of pixels in a smaller screen. So for say a gauge panel if you can find a small 1080p TV (not sure that 1080p goes much smaller than 24" these days) the resolution will be very good). So a 40" plasma or LCD 1080p TV will not looks as sharp because it has the same resolution (1920x1080) which is why the larger the TV the farther away you sit. I have my 32" Samsung 24" away from head location and it's just fine. I picked the Samsung because a.) it has a narrow bezel, and b.) the bezel is removable leaving a narrow frame so when I get a second one I will not have a large black bar down the middle. There again two more with Triple head to Go would be great. Big%20Grin.gifAlan

I have a 22" 1680x1050 that I could see going up to 1920x1200 on especially if the pixel pitch is nice and low. Plus then you can run 1600x1200 apps which I have. I think you can get these at 23-24" but I think that is as far as I'd want to go, especially w/ my hardware which is dated now to the point where performance in FSX will be impacted. I calculated about a 10-12% deterioration in performance w/o impacting smoothness. I think I can make some sliders move slightly left and end up with similar perf as I have now at 1680x1050. Having a second screen is attractive to me to doc other things on. I wonder what effect that has on total performance with my system as it is.

Eric,How far do you plan to sit away from the monitor? This should determine your screen size, much like it does when setting up a home theatre. You could go with a 42 in, but it would be too big if you are only 2-3 feet from it. Only good it would do is perhaps give you a good tan, so grab some sunblock. As n4 mentioned earlier, if you want more field-of-view you should go with a three monitor setup. I am running one now and prefer it over a single screen. The VCs in FSX/FS2004 look far better in a three monitor setup and make you feel like you are more "in the plane", especially if the two outside monitors are angled. :Peace:

Probably about 4ft away or so. I don't have the money to buy three good large monitors like I would want to do if I did the triple monitor deal. I don't know really what I should do as far as size. I read in here some guys wish they had a 55in one and I see other guys saying anything bigger than 30in and you will have a horrible viewing experience.

If you are going to be 4 feet away, I'd look at a 27-32 inches if you are mounting the TV at eye level. Here is a good reference guide too...http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000021501

Your post really caught my attention, thanks!I´ve had my Eyefinity 5760x1080 set-up 3 weeks now, and I don´t like it... (1080 is too flat) Also trouble with the DP adaptor failing and have to reset the whole thing.Maybe a projector is next? Can you just project on a wall, no screen needed?Sorry for a bit off-topic.

Hey Jeff tell me a little more about your 3 monitor setup if you will. Sounds intriguing and tell me how it is that the VC looks far better. Is there much of a 'seam' between each of the 3 screens? Thanks in advance!Noel
