July 16, 201114 yr Hello,A friend of mine just replaced his 1.5G 580 GTX with a 3G version and states that he has no more CTDs whatsoever. Has anyone else tested and compared the two versions of 580 GTX in the CTD prone sceneries in FSX? If so, what have you experienced?Kind regards,
July 16, 201114 yr Hi! Stephen, I have not tested the card but if you are playing with 3 monitor + very high resolution, high AA and 3D the 3GB will help for sure, what was your friends setup?Take a look at this here....comming soon... http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1103387
July 17, 201114 yr I've never yet seen VRAM usage of over 1GB on my card at 1920x1200, and certainly no crashes attributed to memory issues. Could easilly see the 1.5GB getting used up however if someone is running FSX at a higher resolution over several monitors. In fact if someone were using 3 monitors at 1920x1200, I'm not even sure that the 3GB card would hold enough to stop offloading onto system RAM without lowering down some settings. i7 2600k @ 5.1Ghz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz, EVGA GTX 580 @ 950MHz, OCZ Vertex II 240GB, ASUS Xonar DG, Thermaltake Toughpower XT 875W PSU, Antec KÜHLER 620 W/C, Corsair 600T SE White My FS9 Screens - http://fs9screens.blogspot.com/ Callum Richardson
July 17, 201114 yr I see Vram use around 1.5 GB or more whenever I use several sceneries at once, like Megascenery Las Vegas, FSDT KLAS, and Aerosoft Las Vegas at 5040 x 1050 resolution.I would like to get 2 3gb cards but the expense is simply not worth it, maybe the next generation of Nvidia cards will have more Vram on board.
July 17, 201114 yr As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) but the VRAM isn't shared between cards in SLI, so the most FSX will have access to is 1.5GB. That would be the same even if FSX did use SLI. So if you're already up to the limit of 1.5GB then any additional memory requirements are being transfered to system RAM, which is a whole lot slower than GDDR5! Do you notice much of a performance/image quality drop when usage gets that high? i7 2600k @ 5.1Ghz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz, EVGA GTX 580 @ 950MHz, OCZ Vertex II 240GB, ASUS Xonar DG, Thermaltake Toughpower XT 875W PSU, Antec KÜHLER 620 W/C, Corsair 600T SE White My FS9 Screens - http://fs9screens.blogspot.com/ Callum Richardson
July 18, 201114 yr Do you notice much of a performance/image quality drop when usage gets that high?Absolutely, the frames drop and the textures load in a very lagged fashion.
July 18, 201114 yr Seems like that's proof then, that 1.5gb isn't enough for larger resolutions in FSX. Worth taking note for anyone with multi-displays and performance issues. i7 2600k @ 5.1Ghz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz, EVGA GTX 580 @ 950MHz, OCZ Vertex II 240GB, ASUS Xonar DG, Thermaltake Toughpower XT 875W PSU, Antec KÜHLER 620 W/C, Corsair 600T SE White My FS9 Screens - http://fs9screens.blogspot.com/ Callum Richardson
July 18, 201114 yr Seems like that's proof then, that 1.5gb isn't enough for larger resolutions in FSX. Worth taking note for anyone with multi-displays and performance issues.I feel it should be stated that these problems only occur in a few situations where I have alot of addons, taking one out will usually alleviate the problem. In the example I gave above, I can just remove one of the sceneries and performance is restored.Another thing that really spikes up the Vram usage are the Hi-Definition aircraft repaints. When I am flying over default FSX(with REX,GEX, UTX), an area with a single add-on, or even FTX areas the Vram is quite manage-able.
July 18, 201114 yr Commercial Member 2 good planes to test the theory are the PMDG JS41 and the F! Mustang IMO.Cheersjja Jim Allen[email protected]SkyPilot Software home of FSXAssist / P3DAssist

Has anyone else tested and compared the two versions of 580 GTX in the CTD prone sceneries in FSX? If so, what have you experienced?Kind regards,Hi Stephenalthough I have a nice stable system (according to Prime 25.11), I have been getting CTD's with 'gdiplus.dll' as well as some programmes such as FS2Crew for the Wilco 737 crashing when you go 'Alt + Enter' to minimise/maximise screen. Do you know what sort of errors your friend was getting as I would be interested to know what errors the 3GB Ram cured? Thanks & Regards Dave
