Cable modem is HUNDREDS of times faster than dial-up !?! Wow !!!!

Featured Replies

I just configured my PC to receive COX Communications standard rate hi-speed internet service and I downloaded a dozen files from AVSIM and another noted flightsim website for testing. Normally my dial-up permits me to download about 3K/sec. accelerated to 6K/sec using the excellent Internet Download Manager utility. The COX HSI service seems to be several hundred time faster than this. I achieved downloads of zip files of well over 2MB/sec. and perhaps closer to 5 MB or even 10MB/sec. for smaller files. Here are some results of the COX HSI downloads I just did with cable modem, also using the Internet Download Manager utility on top of it:FSUIPC, 1.4 MB - One mouseclick duration to download (1/4 of a sec?)Veneaviones Citation, 1.96 MB - One mouseclick duration to downloadTu-154 with VC, 51.4MB - 118 seconds YS-11 textures, 2.2MB - One mouseclick duration to downloadPOSKY 757 VC, 7.1MB - 10 secs. These rates are totally unbelievable to me. Is this normal? I am blown away. At this rate I'll fill up 100Gigs in no time.Appreciate any responses.JS

Looks right to me.

hi,NO, it doesen't look right I have 2mb cable and your transfer rate isin't 2mb it's around 236KBs. Something to do with KiloBITS being used to measure the speed of the connection and KiloBytes being used to measure the transfer rate. with 56k the max transfer rate you can get is 6KBS, 384K cable, transfer rate:48KBS, 1mb cable around 111KBS transfer rate. 51mb wont take 118 seconds more like 200 seconds. This is what you'll get with 2mb cable. I got these from Broadbandreports.com's speed test. They just use different units for measuring transfer rate and download speed 2mb is 2000kbps your transfer rate would be 238KB/S. KB and Kb are different, one of them is Kilobytes and the other is kilobits.2003-12-18 18:48:27 EST: 1940 / 122Your download speed : 1940595 bps, or 1940 kbps.A 236.8 KB/sec transfer rate.Your upload speed : 122774 bps, or 122 kbps.Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!Andrew

Hi Andrew,I have a cable modem and did a test from the site you mentioned. Here are my test settings:2003-12-18 18:54:44 EST: 6317 / 605Your download speed : 6317417 bps, or 6317 kbps.A 771.1 KB/sec transfer rate.Your upload speed : 605235 bps, or 605 kbps.Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier! I consistantly am capable of downloading files from Avsim at a rate of around 700 - 800kbps. On a few rare occasions (early in the AM) I've broken the 1MB barrier but my average is between the 700 - 800 range.I guess every high speed ISP is different.Mikehttp://www.members.shaw.ca/madamo/boeingsig.jpg

I've got a 2mb cable service. Downloads start out around 325kb/sec and usually level out around 250kb/sec. That's a 50mb file in 200 seconds for those bad with math. Plenty fast enough for me. Scrolling around on the net is pretty much instant also. It's awesome. Charter cable is now $29.95/month. Can't beat it.

hi,Yea Charter has really gotten cheap really close to dial up prices. Andrew

Hey J,The numbers you're getting are impressive however I think your download manager is skewing the numbers a bit. It would be practically impossible for you to be getting download speeds in the 5 to 10MB range with a simple cable modem EVEN with your download manager. The quickest way to test your speed is to perform a download from the Avsim library without your download manager and keep an eye on the transfer rate there. Welcome to the wonderful world of high speed internet!!!! :-)Mikehttp://www.members.shaw.ca/madamo/boeingsig.jpg

Hmmm, those stats you quote are what I might have expected prior to ever using cable modem. If those are the speeds I am supposed to get, how is it possible that I downloaded several 1MB to 2 MB files literally in the time it took me to click the mouse? The smaller files like that downloaded in full almost instantly while the larger files downloaded at 400K to 700K/sec.JS

hi JS,I suppose my ISP is a bit more strict with the speeds it's cutomers get. I never get above what I pay for (2mb cable). COX is probably less strict and doesen't cap the speeds too much(deffinetly good!!!). So your paying for 2mb service and they are letting you get above the 2mb. Andrew

Mike:Yeah, maybe. I keep forgetting that my IDM probably squished the bytes even further and faster! (But I like it !!)Man, to download that 50MB Tu-154 in 118 seconds was....breathtaking. It would have taken me around 3 hours with dialup. The diff is just amazing.Anyway, I'll try without IDM and post those results later.JS

OK, I just d/l the Tu-154 without IDM assisting and it took 150 secs. The indicated speed was a fairly steady 350K/sec.I just deleted the POSKY VC 757 and downloaded it again with IDM and it took 7 secs for 7MB. although IDM indicated d/l speeds of "only" 420K/sec, but I think that was for each of IDM's 3 nodes or whatever they are called. So it was actually d/l at around 1.2MB/sec.Anyway, I am satisifed these speeds are blistering and even if they don't accord with what others are getting, I am in the ballpark. It's WAY higher than anything I dreamed of.Thanks everybody for posting !JS

Sounds about right for a cable high-speed connection. Better plan on a new HD purchase :)-John

Right, in Opera for example, the speed always starts off at a high level then evens out to the actual average speed, this is due to the program loading the file even before you click on "save as" so at first, you get the high average speed indication.-Daniel

What a smile I have on my face... As they have just run cable thru my front yard... It isn't finished yet and they have not contacted new sales yet but it won't be long and I can't wait....Ron Mashburn

I have Cox High Speed Internet as well and achieve similar download speeds... Cpudan80 :) :+
