LOD and Blurries - Please help

Featured Replies

Hi all, I know there are a ton of threads on this but mine is more about timing from Blurries to sharp textures. I run an i7-2600K, with x2 GTX 560 SOC at 1000MHZ with 16GB of RAM. I have services being switched off and I use Ultimate Defrag and have max performance on the defrag of my drives with everything from .bmp, bgls, dds etc at the edge of the platters. I have all 4 cores and 8 threads runnign realtime etc, its a nice ship to run FSX. Ok, I have Scenery settings as follows: LOD (3.5 MID)MESH: 90MESH RES: 5MTEXTURE RES: 7cmWATER EFFECTS low x2SCENERY COMPLEX: EXTREMELEY DENSEAUTOGEN: MAXSPECIAL EFFECTS: HIGH My issue is: the LOD does go sharp from blurry when I am nearly on top of the terrain which goes sharp, is there a way or a setting in the FSX.CFG that I could change to assist in the textures on the ground from loading a little quicker so they are sharp a little earlier than from almost being on top of them. In other words I only get to enjoy sharp ground textures for a moment before I have flown over them if this makes sense, I do not really want to compromise on anything else but is there a setting I should try in the FSX.CFG to see if the textures will become sharper sooner so I can enjoy sharper textures at a slighly greater distance. Many thanks for anyone who could assist me on this one........ P.S. I get a minimum of 20FPS at heavy airports...... Many thanks all...:)

Why are you using LOD 3.5?? That is so oldschool and 2600K shouldn't have any troubles handling LOD 4.5. Here lies your problem: it's not timing, but rather just not telling FSX to spread high LOD textures further. That being said, I'm running manual LOD of 7.5 in the fsx.cfg, the line is called LOD_RADIUS. Be aware that every time you enter and "OK" settings in FSX, it will default back to 4.5.Higher the LOD number, more virtual space is FSX going to use, going to high is going to cause OOM errors. Also higher the LOD number, more textures further are going to be sharp. Also you can easily push all your mesh forward, there is no performance difference.Water as you like: that one eats FPS.

Hi Word Not Allowed, Many thanks for this, I will give 7.5 a try and when you say mesh all the way up are you talking MESH which mine is 90 or are you talking Mesh Res at 5m, which one are you saying I can slide all the way up to 100% ?? Many thanks Word Not Allowed for your reply Regards
Many thanks for this, I will give 7.5 a try
BTW, even 5.5 will give quite an improvement and have less of a performance impact - so experiment a bit..

Many thanks Bert, I will give it a try....cheers for that

I asked a similar question yesterday and tried several things out last night with very good results :)1) I increased my LOD_RADIUS to 5.5 (based on Berts recommendation).2) I switched from trilinear filtering to Anisotropic filtering. Both of these steps helped and I find my out of cockpit views much better now.

I mean both. They both don't impact framerate or performance much, or at all. Not on this chip. And concerning LOD, you can try ANYTHING. You can put 30 there if you want (be vary of loading time if you do that, it's just for the fun of it...). You can put 6, 7, 6.5... whatever... experiment and see what is the best performance/looks ratio for you.

Ok, when you say you went from Trilinear to Anisotropic this is in the FSX.CFG? I assume this isnt relating to the GPU settings? I went to 5.5 and I started to get stuttering in flight, I think I have pushed the sim to its envelope, I have stuck with 4.5 and this seems to be ok, more LOD seems to make a difference for me, I will try the Tri to Ani and see if that helps, I did also read another post in regards to the GPU antialiasing that you dont need to go beyond 8x but I am not sure which setting would world as you can see jagged edges with shadows etc but again I will give it a try. Word Not Allowed, it does seem to effect me and I think as I said I am at the envelope if I go 100% MESH. I seem to have much better detail on the ground by going to 5m on the Texture Res, I dont know if this is a performance hit at at but it makes a huge difference in the detail on the ground. Again I will try the TRI to ANI in the FSX.CFG and limit the GPU to 8x Antialiasing and see if that helps also. Thanks again guys for your invaluable input.......cheers

please tell me what you did, that your textures are sharp before you are on the top of it. Have the sam problem, that textures are sharp after I flew over it. have LOD 7 and the other typical tweaks (multi bandwith 70, ...) greetings

Not wanting to appear dumb Worried.gif but what is LOD and is this something you download or just change settings in FSX.cfg?ThanksAlan

You can choose between trilinear filtering and and Anisotropic on the FSX graphics settings page. I also set the amount of Anisotropic to 4x in my graphics card control panel.

Okay thanks for that explanation. I set the LOD to 6.5 with no detrimental affects. I guess you keep increasing it until you find the sweet spot.Alan

And I would suggest anisotropic to 16X (!) not much performance impact, big visual improvement. BTW, FSX will reset your LOD_radius setting to 4.5 if you make any in-flight changes..

Best visual results I've gotten in FSX are with these settings. System builds vary widely and your milage may vary, but try these for starters: [Display]ChangeTime=4.000000TransitionTime=4.000000ActiveWindowTitleTextColor=255,255,255ActiveWindowTitleBackGroundColor=0,28,140,64NonActiveWindowTitleTextColor=255,255,255NonActiveWindowTitleBackGroundColor=24,33,87,64InfoUpperRightTextColor=255,0,0InfoUpperRightBackGroundColor=0,0,0,0InfoLowerLeftTextColor=255,255,255InfoLowerLeftBackGroundColor=255,0,0,128InfoLowerRightTextColor=255,255,255InfoLowerRightBackGroundColor=255,0,0,128InfoBrakesEnable=FalseInfoParkingBrakesEnable=FalseInfoPauseEnable=TrueInfoSlewEnable=TrueInfoStallEnable=FalseInfoOverspeedEnable=FalseBLOOM_EFFECTS=0SKINNED_ANIMATIONS=1TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=80 <----------- Don't treat this like you did in fs9! 80 or 90 should be enough.UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30WideViewAspect=True// USER ADDITIONS ----------------------------------------------RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=0.25RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=0.25RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=0.25RUNWAY_LIGHTS_TAXI_SCALAR=0.25RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=0.25TextureMaxLoad=9 <--------- Works in conjuntion with TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD under [GRAPHICS], TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTIPLIER under [Display], and UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT if you use it. Use multiples of 3 only. Helps speed the loading of texures. This setting takes a lot of trial and error experimentation to get what works best for you. From ******* Altuve:"The formula on how to determine your 'optimal' TextureMaxLoad goes like this (credit to Steve Lacey here http://www.steve-lac....blurries.shtml) If UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT exists, then:MAX_TEXTURE_DATA = (TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD * (TextureMaxLoad * TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTIPLIER)) / UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT If UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT doesn't exist (UNLIMITED FRAMES) then:MAX_TEXTURE_DATA = TextureMaxLoad * TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD As you can see above, TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTIPLIER its just that, a multiplier. Evidently, changing it DOES change things, however, when running UNLIMITED frames, it is USELESS, so you are better of playing with TextureMaxLoad directly. be VERY CAREFULL, the 'resulting'value of this formula (MAX_TEXTURE_DATA) corresponds to the MAXIMUM number of bytes the TEXTURE MANAGER is allowed to 'upload' perframe. If the resulting value (in bytes) for MAX_TEXTURE_DATA is TOO HIGH you will spike your GPU! (and cause a stutter), so this is a'test and see' value. Ideally, you'll see an impact on COMPLEX high resolution textures sceneries like PNW and/or PhotoReal scenery. It is important to mention that THIS value does NOT have an impact on CPU if you are running a Multiple core setup, due to the texturemanager threads running in the cores responsible for texture loading and object batching. (which are the last 3 if you have 4 cores)" [Main]User Objects=Airplane, HelicopterSimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\AirplanesSimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\RotorcraftSimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehiclesSimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\BoatsSimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\AnimalsSimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\MiscSimObjectPaths.6=SimObjects\UT2 AircraftSimObjectPaths.7=SimObjects\AIBizjetsSimObjectPaths.8=SimObjects\AICargoAirlinersSimObjectPaths.9=SimObjects\AIGeneralAviationSimObjectPaths.10=SimObjects\AIMilitarySimObjectPaths.11=SimObjects\AIPaxAirlinersMaximized=1Location=319,221,1359,999,\\.\DISPLAY1HideMenuNormal=0HideMenuFullscreen=1ProcSpeed=11809PerfBucket=7// USER ADDITIONS ----------------------------------------------FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.25 <----------- In basic terms, allows FSX to think more about background tasks every few frames rendered in FSX.
