September 9, 201114 yr So I was flying in europe, when I had the following scenario: Wind 273/30 I had heading select on 323 and the plane went with heading 330. Isn´t the plane supposed to correct against the wind, not with it?? Oliver Donner
September 9, 201114 yr It was flying 323 magnetic, and, because of the wind, it was tracking 330 magnetic Cristi Neagu
September 9, 201114 yr Are you sure you are not confusing track and heading? Lukas "TIN TIN -=9th Shrek=-" Mathijsen
September 9, 201114 yr Author But to keep the selected heading the plane has to correct against the wind....not with it, or am I wrong? Oliver Donner
September 9, 201114 yr Flying a heading of 323 means that the nose of the airplane will point in that direction. The actual track you fly over the ground will depend on wind - as you have discovered. September 9, 201114 yr Author Ok, than I stand corrected....I just thought I saw the MD-11 correct against the wind, when I used heading select on it. But hey....you learn something new everyday. Oliver Donner
September 9, 201114 yr Sorry, but I doubt this makes sense. Heading is where your nose is pointed at, and heading select is exactly that. It will hold a heading, and hence can't correct for any prevailing wind conditions. I still think there might be a mix up between heading and track here.
September 9, 201114 yr If I remember correctly the MD-11 has the option to let you fly a selected track rather than a selected heading. That may be what you saw in the MD-11. September 9, 201114 yr I noticed the same thing on my last flight. I was told to fly heading (definitely heading) 070 and after I had it dialed in, I was flying a track (definitely track) of 070. I had quite a strong right to left crosswind at the time and the little carat at the top of the ND was deflected to the left about 6 degrees indicating a heading of about 064. I didn't know the aircraft automatically corrected for wind in HDG mode. Is this correct?? Adam Adam Hill
September 9, 201114 yr From FCOM v2, 4.10.14....it does not appear the aircraft following wind-corrected track is correct. Maybe an expert can comment: 8 Heading Select (HDG SEL) SwitchPush – •engages HDG SEL command mode•commands roll to follow selected heading•annunciates HDG SEL as FMA roll mode and illuminates HDG SEL switch light. Heading Select Command Mode The HDG SEL mode commands roll to turn to and maintain heading shown in MCP HEADING display: •initial selection commands turn in shortest direction toward selected heading bug•after mode engagement, roll commands are given to turn in same direction as rotation of heading selector•bank angle limit is established by bank angle selector•HDG SEL mode automatically disengages upon capture of selected radio course in VOR LOC and APP modes (VOR/LOC armed). September 9, 201114 yr So we have one user complaining that it is not following a track when in heading select - and another user complaining that it is doing the opposite Tom Risager NGX tutorial: http://library.avsim.net/sendfile.php?Location=AVSIM&Proto=ftp&DLID=162360 SIDs & STARs Worked Examples: LOWI-UUDD, KSEA-KLAX, EKCH-ENGM, YSCB-YPAD

Is this correct??Well... this *sort of* rings a bell, as I *believe* this might have been brought up as a bug in the very early days. Would have to dig out the old threads though. I think there was something like this would happen only after you had had LNAV previously engaged, and then the plane would spuriously follow TRK instead of HDG when using HDG SEL.
September 9, 201114 yr Etienne, I don't remember that thread but with so many flying down the forum I probably missed it. Yes, I had definitely been in LNAV previous to to engaging HDG SEL. This would explain why the a/c is following track. I didn't know it was already reported: http://forum.avsim.n...__fromsearch__1 And it appears "fixed" although I would assume this is for the SP and was not in the hotfixes. I never installed the hotfixes because I have not had any issues with the initial release except for one nasty panel freeze after a "VNAV DISCONNECT" message. Adam Adam Hill
September 9, 201114 yr So we have one user complaining that it is not following a track when in heading select - and another user complaining that it is doing the opposite I don't think anyone (me included) is complaining about anything. I was merely agreeing with the O/P that the HDG SEL causes the aircraft to follow a track and not heading. As has been mentioned now, this is a bug, has been reported and fixed for the SP a while back. In all reality, I kind of like the fact that it follows track although it is incorrect for this a/c.Adam Adam Hill
