I would have thought for an overclocker's card they may put the cooling that the put on the GTX 460 2Win, the DS I think. This cooler doesn't seem adequate.

Oh no no no....this is a huge fan....wait for the review, already hit 1000MHz on air with the they used for testing....can't imagine on water.....phew

Really? I still would have thought a dual flower style fan would be better.

You missed out by several months Alain. My 580 GTX has been running at 900+Mhz since late last year, and will do 1,000Mhz in testing easily. The extra memory is not going to make a single bit of difference unless you are running an imax. Any way, I don't want to be an "I told you so!" but, hey, I told you so! Kind regards,

Alain, faster cards keep coming. Gigabyte has given my GTX580 SO card the same speeds. And with GPU Gauntlet Sorting selection only the highest performance GPU processors are being used for these cards. Frequently I have it running at 940/1880/4800, but most of the time at 905/1710/4300.

Guys I think you are missing the point here, first it's not about the extra memory as you can get the same card in 1.5GB, these card were designed for and by OVERCLOCKERS, they have 2 x 8 pins connector and 1 x 6 pins connector, these card are built to be pushed to the max, can a GTX 580 vanilla hit 1000MHz....maybe....24/7 safely on air in respectable temp is another question ...

top_power.jpgtop_noise.jpg Stephen old friend, I don't doubt at all that your card can hit 1000MHz on air but can you run FSX in safe temp. without any artifacts, is the card stable?? If the answer is yes you have one of a kind GTX 580, I'm sure ....seriously.

Yes, Alain, I always run the card at least 900Mhz with narry an artifact as has been specifically stated in my signature and in reviews from the beginning. Nothing has changed, and my natural exuberance does not extend to exaggeration or embellishment. It will run stable without artifacts at 1000Mhz for at least an hour in testing, although there was little improvement in performance that I could discern with a 100Mhz increase. I certified these numbers last December, in the video card thread, and from what I heard back then, that was not uncommon, for whatever reason, with many of the very first reference designs out of the blocks. The 580GTX is probably the very best overclocker Nvidia has ever made, and it doesn't need a special edition with fancy fans and a higher price to be so. Sure, there are the occassional under achievers, but they are far fewer than what was previously the norm. My point was simply teasing you, noting that you did not buy for the best part of a year, waiting for the next one to come along. How many threads have you started here on AVSIM and FTX about the "next" video card monsters that trump the existing 580's? Probably dozens if I go back and count. However, we all live and learn so I am glad you say you are now going to buy a 580GTX, whatever its constituted parts. Temperatures with any 580GTX is never a problem as they do not run hot unless there is a problem with the case. Under the most sever loads in a hot room, I have never seen my temps go over 70c, but usually run in the 40s or low 50s. These running temps are not uncommon either, and is pretty much a 580GTX vacuum chamber birthright. They are not 480GTXs or share that unfortunate card's less desireable operating characteristics whatsoever. Welcome to the 500 series Alain. I hope you enjoy it to the fullest. For me, it is summer, the weather is still good, and I like my new little truck Love.gif a lot more than any computer part, no matter how sexy it is. cool.png Besides, this discussion is in the wrong forum, but should be in the video section directly underneath. Take care my friend. This evening I plan to try Prepar3D 1.2 for the first time. Kind regards,

Stephen, I said you have one of a kind card, you can count your blessing on this card, I know a lot of peoples who will get a divorce for that kind of MHz (1000) on a 580 on air...I'm telling you that if you ask everybody here running a GTX 580 to try 1000MHz stable with good temp after stress testing them (first reference design or not) none will be able to do it, and probably not on water also cause you need to raise the voltage a lot to get 1000MHz ... Granted that 1000MHz is not "gonna" make a lot of difference compare to 900MHz in FSX but peoples like me play other games also, try Crysis 2 at 1000MHz on your car and look at the temp..... Here it's summer all year long....I like my old bike so I'll go downtown crusing a little..... moto_alain_001.jpg

I don't think I'd want a card with huge vram. I'd end up getting more OOM's because the video ram is subtracted from the virtual address space (of about 4GB) when playing FSX.

MSI Lightning (and the Lightning XE if you want 3Gb VRAM) and ASUS Matrix Platinum are two more great 580's with 16 phase power and custom cooling that can hit/break 1000MHz if you get a good chip. More choices is always a good thing!

I also think you got lucky with your card Stephen, it's a gem. Mine won't go above 880 without doing a hard reset. I have two in SLI(I don't care what the dogma states, I get better frames in SLI), and I suspect one of them is not the best overclocker.
