NVIDIA or AMD/ATI?

Featured Replies

Hello,Still can't make a decision for a new graphics card for FSX. I was planning to buy the MSI GTX560ti Hawk, but after hearing about some heating issues, I'm starting to doubt. The GTX580 is really out of my budget at the moment so I was thinking, what about an AMD card? Are they any good for FSX (and the NGX)? I was thinking about the AMD HD 6950 1GB. Not too expensive but seems to be a good card. Anyone else having a good experience with AMD card, FSX and the NGX? (No panel freezes for example) Thanks in advance for the advice. :-)

I use a 2GB ATI Radeon HD6950 (Sapphire) and I have nothing to complain, I am quite the opposite in the group of users who have no problems with the 737 NGX.My computer is almost 100% AMD. João Alfredo

Hmmm... thats nice. I'm planning to build a whole new pc, with an MSI Z68A-GD65, i7 2600K, Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600, and an AMD 6950. So if you have nothing to complain, and also no freezes with your card, I'm gonna get that one? How are the temps. And what is your performance on frame rate heavy airport like Aerosoft Mega Airport sceneries and ORBX?Thanks,

I have a very old ATI card (4850), to be honest it could do with replacing where other sims are concerned, but having said that I've not had any issues with the NG when using it. Al

Well, I use my FSX in native form, do not know the outcome with many accessories, but I have a good FPS on average 30, using external limiter, freezing and never had these things that so many complain.I believe that good performance depends heavily on the "health" of the whole system.I work with computer maintenance and I can say that most of the defects were caused by the piece with fingers 10 which lies between the chair and the keyboard! My personal choice AMD / ATI all the way m8I run the HD5850 1GB. 800mhz and 1175mhz and 90% fan overclocked of course and my temps don't exceed 55 degrees.. very easy to overclock ATI cards very well built

I used until recently an XFX HD4870 512 MB, and there was not much deference when I started using the HD6950.At the moment I keep my 4870 saved for a possible emergency João Alfredo

But it's been a very long time since i owned an Nvidia so i certainly cannot comment on them just on present card i own

I bought the 5870 1GB some time ago and I am satisfied with its performance, energy consumption and the costs I had to buy it. Manhattan X with dense autogen and KJFK FSDT is no problem. But maybe in terms of sheer performance Nvidia may be better but not as the whole package.

Im runni'n the stock GTX 560 TI 1,2gb with no issue at all. The preformance is really good and with an average fps of 55 in VC im very satisfied

I have a GTX 460, but will replace it sometime soon. I'm interested in the comments so far- my understand from reading other posts was that there was an issue with ATI/Radeon GPUs when flying in clouds- something to do with shaders I recall- and not so much to do with the GPU but the way that FSX is designed. The advantage that an ATI/Radeon card would have for me is I have a Samsung 3D monitor, which with their new 3D will work more readily with those GPU's (although I have found work-arounds for the NV 3D Vision protocol). Thanks, Bruce.

Yeah that is true it don't like to many layers and the shaders arn't as good as Nvidia, But visual which is what fsx is all about is good

No problem with my ATI card here (I used the 3850 and 4870 before). However, as the card's memory will be part of the max 4 GByte the FSX can address (because of its 32 bit limits) I would recommend to 1GB on-board of your new video adapter. The frame rate will be limited more or less by your CPU anyway.

Axel

I started out with a Nvidia Gt210 then went to a Radeon Sapphire HD5450 which gave me a BIG increase in performance, although both are 'low end' graphics cards I believe the Radeon to be much better.

Thanks Steve, Do you know if theer's a model of Radeon GPU where this was fixed- or does FSX need "fixing" to catch up the GPU? :) Thanks, Bruce.
