October 17, 201114 yr I was flying C172 today and I got a traffic alert on the GPS about less than 800 Feet under me and it was southwest 737 coming so fast, by the time I got to see it on the radar it was too close to avoid it if it was closer. I know real ATC and approach centers separate all traffic and alert all IFR flights for traffic but if things don't go the right way will the 737 pilot get to see me on his radar. Evan Banalian.
October 17, 201114 yr To your question: If you have a properly working Mode C transponder, than yes. Other wise no. Your GPS traffic avoidance system uses ADS-B data to report traffic information. *Traffic reported by his system must have a transponder *. The transponder reports it's location to the controlling agency, and data is sent from them to your GPS unit. Very basic idea of what happens there. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
October 17, 201114 yr Commercial Member In order to show on ADS-B, doesn't the aircraft have to have a mode-S transponder? I thought this was the big reason ADS-B implementation would be an issue. Airlines, of course, can foot the bill for new transponders, but it's hard to push the GA crowd into expensive replacement technology. With TCAS, it is my understanding that it picks up anything with a mode-C transponder in the vicinity, but that's a different system than ADS-B. Kyle Rodgers
October 17, 201114 yr ADS-B is not fully implemented yet, and won't be for years, and possibly never. The TCAS is showing Mode C transponders, Jay

October 19, 201114 yr ADS-B is not fully implemented yet, and won't be for years, and possibly never. The TCAS is showing Mode C transponders,For small aircraft "PCAS" systems, they do use ADS-B data. Transponder signals are received by the controlling agency and then broadcast through ADS-B. Hardware like the GNS 430 in conjunction with the GTX 330 use this data method for traffic collision avoidance. The Ipad can do this with a certain hardware peripheral as well, displaying WX and traffic data, Check this out: http://www.faa.gov/n...shMap/index.cfm Click ADS-B > Advisory Services > En Route PS. ADS-B traffic/WX services are available on the whole East Coast. I know I use it every day. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
