Trim Wheel(s) - seem slow?

Featured Replies

Good afternoon (well, here in Southern New Hampshire, USA it is, anyway!)It's the Ol' Blackbird here......with a question for any Real life NG Pilots (or anyone with any knowledge)......Is it just me, or does the trim wheel in the cockpit spin very slowly on the new 737 NGX? The reason I ask is that I have several videos by I T V V and WAR (World Air Routes) of 737's, and the trim wheel is often spinning much faster than on my sim. Any ideas? I love the sound it makes (thanks to the Gent who did the all sounds - they are lush.) This is not a complaint.........just an observation. I think the '73 is the finest aircraft to grace FSX - bar none - and that's saying a lot ('cause my fav jet before this has always been the Level D 767, mostly because the FO dials in the descent altitudes for me during the flight. I just love that.)Ok - that's it - thanks!!!! Goin up for Supper! Be back in a while!Best,Ray Landolt (Blackbird)

Nothing we can do about it unfortunately - the actual rate that the trim itself moves at (the values on the gauge/strip) are 100% accurate, but the animation is always slow due to the way we're interacting with and modifying the internal FS trim variable stuff.

Hi, Ryan - thank you very much for your reply!! Now I know!Best, Ray Landolt

Now that someone is talking about the trim, there's something that's been bothering me. Actually 2 problems. I know it's not a bug or fault, just me not knowing how to do this. Whenever I'm trimming, it's always too fast, for instance, I find it difficult to trim from 5.08 to 5.10 (just an example).Problem #1: it skips to maybe 5.13 or 5.15, and then I start trimming back, I see problem #2:Problem #2: it goes to 5.20+ first (even though I'm trimming in the opposite direction), before starting to decrease, and then it passes the 5.10 by 0.03 or more, and the process is repeated.Problem (#2) doesn't really bother me, but #1 is a little frustrating, and I was wondering if there is any way to decrease the trim rate (maybe to 0.01 increments. Do real pilots just get it as close as possible especially during takeoffs, or do they have to set it at 5.10 if the FMC says 5.10?Thanks in advance.

The real trim does not have this 001 precision...However, are you trimming with flaps extended or retracted? With flaps retracted (UP) the speed of the trim is slower than with flaps extended (1 to 40)

Yeah - do not worry about getting the trim accurate to the hundredths place or whatever - real pilots do not have that degree of precision with it. Just eyeball it with the strip on the pedestal - close is more than good enough.

I think "Smasher77th" is right and the flaps has nothing to do with it.if the Autopilot could trim it very detailed (as after a while you see the trim wheel stop moving and the plane is fully trimmed regardless to flaps), how can we as pilotget to that resolution of trimming?well if it's not possible, it is also an answer.the question is, if it is possible.

Flaps have a lot to do with the trim speed... try it...And it is normal... you need to trim faster when you are putting flaps to contrast the tendency of the plane to pitch.

ok, it does you are right, but not directly to what "Smasher77th" was asking (see my autopilot example above).or in other words, how can we as pilot brake to that lower trimming resolution as the autopilot does?

I was speaking about flaps because if flaps are up, a single click moves them less than with flaps, this adding more resolution. But I never tried as an exact setting is not required, it is sufficient the one that is closest to the calculated value.

in general you are right as in most cases you would engage the autopilot some time after take off and it would do the trimming for you at a fine resolution.however "Smasher77th" question is valid to myself for example as I always do my flights manually (hand flown) and I constantly finding my self need to trim Up and DOWN the entire CRZpahse in order to maintain my CRZ altitude exactly , as I never manage to get to that accurate trimming resolution as the Autopilot does.that is what I meant and I believe "Smasher77th" meant same with his question.

I have the Saitek Multi Panel with trim wheel. This worked perfectly before SP1 but, sadly does not work at all post SP1 :-(

Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)

I think I got my answer from Ryan (I do not need to be precise). But just for clarification purposes, I was talking specifically about the takeoff trim, which I always do with the flaps up, as I only lower flaps just before taxi. Let's say for instance, that after doing the FMC programming, on the takeoff page, I have the takeoff trim as "5.84" for instance. That's what I meant, but like I said, Tabs has cleared that, and if I understood him correctly, I should get as close enough as possible, and I should be ok.
