FSX Computer

Featured Replies

In the next days, I want to buy me a new computer. I want to buy a SSD in addition to the 500 GB harddisc and install FSX plus Add-Ons and REX alone on the SSD (120GB)Do you think this is possible?David

I ran FSX and addons on a 120Gb SSD. It got to about 100Gb. Very doable but thin. I have sense went to a 240Gb SSD.What I would do is use the SSD with Intel Smart Response in conjunction with the hardware drive. The SSD becomes a very large cache for the drive. You get about 75% of the performance of an SSD alone but you will have 500Gb of storeage which is plenty. You need a Z68 mother board to do this.

So, it is possible to use the SSD ONLY for FSX? Because in the computer shop, they told me that was not possible...David

Buy a 240 gig SSD and run your operating system and FSX plus whatever other stuff you want as addons on the SSD. Use the HDD for all non essential programs. You need to run your OS on your SSD as well to get maximum performance. Just don't put FSX in the same folder as your OS programs. Use a completely separate folder for FSX.

The SPARC64 VIIIfx 2.0GHz, Tofu interconnect computer is a decent rig, but it will just barely run FSX on max settings though.

They don't know. 120gb will hold what you're talking about installing.

That's what I thought, too. I now have a 120GB SSD AND a 240GB SSD.

Yes, but it sounds like you also have your os on the SSD.

True indeed. It is my belief that the OS and FSX talk to each other a lot and would benefit from SSD speed. Can you tell I'm not an expert? I just go with what I've experienced. I had FSX on an SSD and the OS on an HDD and both on the SSD seemed WAY better. No benchmark data, just experience.

Oh I wasn't saying it wouldn't benefit him, but if he already has a 120 ssd, I don't think it'd be worth buying a new, larger drive.I use a 120 ssd for FSX+addons, a 10k velociraptor for the OS & a 1tb for backups & setup file storage.

Hi!This is the rest of my (planned) PC-setup:Asus P8P67 B3 Revision MotherboardIntel Core I5 2500KEKL Alpenföhn Matterhorn Cooler8 GB RAMGTX 570 graphics500 GB harddriveOCZ Vertex 2 Series SSD 120 GBWin 7 Home PremiumI want to overclock the i5 to about 4,4 GHz and, as I said, run ONLY FSX on the SSD.Do you think, this is possible? What FPS will I get averaged? Any experiences?DavidP.S.: Ethan I answered your PM :-)

Well I can't really say what fps you'll be getting as it's different for each system and the exact way you have it set up. (sometimes changing one setting just a little can make a big difference in framerates or smoothness) You should definitely be satisfied, however. To give an example, at ORBX KSEA or FSDT's KLAS I get 18-30 (very smooth) in the VC, everything maxed but water (2xlow) and traffic (20%) at 5996x1080 resolution (3 monitors) and an undocked CDU on a 4th touchscreen monitor. Addons include all NA ORBX regions, REX textures, UTX, GEX, FSGenesis, 5 FSDT airports, ASE & TrackiR. That's with the system in my sig and an i5 2500k at stock settings (I killed the OC during a recent migration to SSD & haven't set it back up yet). Once you OC it just gets better. This is in windowed mode with forced windowed vsync. If you're using just 1 or two monitors it will perform much better than mine.EDIT: On the OC don't be disappointed if you can only reach 4.3GHz, only half of Sandy Bridge CPU's can go past that.

Hi!In response to your pm, yes. When installing the operating system, select the HD as the installation drive. Easy as that. Then the 500GB hard drive will be you primary one and hold all of programs, files, etc. Once your operating system is installed, open my computer and go to the SSD drive. The drive should be blank. You can create a folder called "sim" and a folder called 'rex". Then when you put the DVD's to install FSX, on the first screen, choose "More Options". It will have a box for the installation directory. The default is C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator X. Clear this and type "D:sim" if your SSD has a different letter, use that instead of D. The installer will make registry entries so that when ever you install an addon, it will go to the new location instead of the C:.....You would install REX the same way. There you go! You should be all set!Take CareOh, one suggestion. You mention Win 7. MAKE SURE you get the 64 bit version and NOT the 32 bit one. And what type ram specifically were you getting?

Thank you Ethan!Yes, I will buy the 64bit version of Win 7.I am not sure with the RAM. The only thing I know is, that it should have 8GB.And another specific question to your system:What frames do you get with the i5 at 4,8GHz?CheersDavid
