Running FSX for extended periods of time.

I often fly on vatsim and usually long haul flights. I prefer to fly the whole flight without using accel rate (plus I think its against the vatsim rules). Is this bad to do? Could it damage important PC components (Videocard, Cpu, etc) for running 9-15 hours straight on fsx? I was wondering if this may have been the cause for gpu damage.

As long as your system has a good amount of ventilation and cooling, there should not be an problems. If your system overheats, It will most likley crash FSX long before it will damage anything in your system.Rob

I have often wondered the same?At times I have gotten tired of starting ASE then booting up FSX to go fly. So what I started doing was getting ASE ready, then boot FSX and do my NGX flight and when I get to my arrival airport park and shut the BGX down to a cold and dark state but leave ASE and FSX running until the next day and then start a new flight and repeat the process.I've let FSX and ASE run for as long as 6 days straight doing this and had no problems and everything worked fine, however I was wondering how much extra wear and tear I was putting on my FSX computer by letting FSX run for that many days in a row while unattended. I have stopped doing it but it was a great solution to be able to just walk over to my computer and already have everything fired up and ready to go :-)

I have a PC at work that, except for the mandatory restarts due to anti-virus, Windows Updates and other program updates, hasn't been shut down for a couple of years! It may not be running FSX but it's doing fine. I even think its probably better for the power supply as well, not having to turn on and off and on and off, etc... on a daily basis.

I typically allow my FSX test machine run 24/7 for weeks at a time (or until one of my projects crashes the sim!) as a means of stress testing my projects.All the other computers on my network also run 24/7, especially now that they all have a UPS to which they are connected. Cold booting a computer constantly is very hard on the components.

I program a radio station and all our programming (music, commercials, etc) come from a PC. It is NEVER shut down. We reboot once a month after MS updates and play a song from a CD until the system comes up. The current box has been running almost 2 years with never more than 4 minutes rest. The only issues I have with FSX and long flights is that it seems there is something that causes memory issues (memory leak) and any flight over a day or so typically causes a CTD with me.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Paul. That's quite impressive. My oldest computer is an ancient 286 that once did yeoman duty as the heart of Candlenet Abbey BBS. Although it was retired from service about fifteen years ago, it will still boot up and load PC Board... During its term of service, it ran 24/7 for nearly twelve years, only being shut down six times during relocations to new job assignments.
