4.2 GHz aren´t enough, or?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, after a long time of GA flying I slowly get involved in commercial flying again. I´m currently using the CS C-130 and the 727-100 and soon the NGX. you can see my spec´s down im my signature. I think it´s a pretty powerful system now and I should have no problem flying FSX. But I´m just on my 727 maiden flight and encountered only 10 FPS upon take-off in KPDX. This ain´t enough and thus I´m thinking of oc´ing my CPU a bit more. Would an possible oc to arround 4.5 - 4.6 GHz worth it?

Best regards, Steffen

If you have an excellent aftermarket CPU cooler, try to push it to 5GHZ. You would notice a good FPS jump going from 4.2--->5GHZ.

Hi,In my opinion 4.2Ghz is not enough for smooth FSX performance, and very puzzling why anyone with an unlocked SB would be only at that level. Yes, there is a real improvement from 4.2Ghz to 4.5 or 4.6Ghz. Your i5-2500K is made for much higher.Kind regards,

Hi Stephen, I had it one time running at 4.6 GHz (With that setting I made the FSXMark11 test, see the sheet for the results!). But after I installed my new PSU I wasn´t able to run it on the same stiings as before. Got an BSOD and I didn´t wan´t to fiddle with these settings, I simply decreased to 4.2 GHz.I´m using the offset mode for the CPU voltage. How can I increase the offset voltage?

Its not going to take the FPS from 10 to smooth! There are other issues.
I´m aware of that but where are these other issues?

I just took off at KPDX on 28L - flew down the river, circled, and landed on 100L. CS 727 Cougar Air Cargo - REX, ORBX Pac NW scenery, all setting pretty close to max - no AI traffic, no ground shadowsI averaged 12 fps and never saw less than 11 fpsi5-750 oc'd to 3.4 GHz with 4 GB of OK memory and an very old Nvidia 8800GTS cardMy experience, (lots of testing and in a prior life my profession was measuring the performance of computer systems) is that FPS increases pretty much linearly with GHz - 20% GHz increase - 18 - 21% FPS increase. But - your 10fps/sec with the i5-2500K 4.2GHz sounds like you have a lot of high overhead effects turned on:AI traffic (boats, cars, planes, ground AC)ground shadowslight bloomI don't use most of those effectsThe other HUGE hit on FPS on my system is the type of AA and Aniostropic filtering I ask the video card to do. I can change the FPS by 30% or more with the wrong video settings. Additionally, the wrong driver can have a 20% impact. Complicated subject (I spent 30 interesting years doing the work) - measuring computer performance. BUT with no other changes to your system - more GHz=more FPS

First I wan´t to thank you for your dedicated post in here, it seems you´re the right man for this topic.

AI traffic (boats, cars, planes, ground AC)ground shadowslight bloom
Well, I´m addicted to AI traffic, I´ve got a lot of WOAI traffic and it´s set on 65% (Airlines and GA) but boats and cars are on 16% as adviced by ORBX (Yes, I´m also using PNW.). Light Bloom is off. I know this is an exessive FPS hoog and therefore it´s turned off.
The other HUGE hit on FPS on my system is the type of AA and Aniostropic filtering I ask the video card to do. I can change the FPS by 30% or more with the wrong video settings. Additionally, the wrong driver can have a 20% impact.
I think my GTX 560 SC is well up to the work. I´ve checked its performance through the flight and the GPU usage rarely went over 50%. My settings are this one here: AA: AA_MODE_METHOD_SUPERVCAA_64X_4v12 and Aniostropic filtering 16x and I´m using the NVIDIA driver 285.62 WHQL.I don´t know whether this is the best driver for my card but the AA gives really nice and perfect pictures without any jaggies or something else.Btw I made yesterday some short testing with the current settings:4.2 GHz:Idle: 1,056V; 30-40°C100% usage (With Prime95): 1,300V - 1,328V ; ~70°C (But in FSX the heat is a bit lower, at arround 65°C or so.)How much room for oc do these values give me? What do you think?

Best regards, Steffen

I ran the stock boing 707 from fsx with the settings in picture kpdx1 and kpdx2: never got under 59 f.p.s.next I ran the CS (cap sim) 707 with higher display settings (kpdx1 and kpdx3) (everthing maxed!): I never got under 19 and 26 was average 32 was max, taking off and flying around KPDX. In outside view frames were much higher with no panel on the screen.Something is wrong with your system as my puter is not much different than yours...In other words, inside the VC of Cap Sim 707 and panning all around the cockpit and throwin switches I was normally at 27 to 29 fps all the time, once it dragged down to 19 for couple seconds, and once shot up to 32. But pretty much at the high 20's always (with everything maxed as in the bottom picture, all slider right. In outside view with the CS707 the fps was 30-50.Regards, Fielder

And maybe the fact that he´d used unlimited frames. I´ve mine locked at 30, cause they are a lot smoother then. But I´ll maybe also set them to unlimited and see what´s happening.

I'm doing 39 in FSXmark11 (which is about the only real valid test).39 is just normal for a system like mine, nothing exceptional.Part of FSXmark11 is Bojotes automatic configuration website which polishes fsx.cfg.

Yeah, I know this test. I had an value of 43 FPS when I did it with my CPU at 4.6 GHz. Btw. I´m back from my first NGX flight. Just and quick one from Spokane to Faichild Intl. Down at Spokane with frames locked on 30 I had arround 20 FPs in the VC but after setting it to unlimited I got arround 30 and it was darn smooth. Whether PNW or not, also the landing at Fairchild was smooth and no shutters over all. I´m happy now. I think I´ll let it on unlimited.

Best regards, Steffen
