SSD, is it worth it?

Featured Replies

Hi, I am thinking of buying a 60gb SSD, which I will install FSX & other addons onto. SSD's are quite expensive so I have a couple of questions before I shell out £70 to buy one.1. Which areas of FSX will I see a performance gain and by how much?2. Will I be able to leave my OS and all other files on my HDD, and install FSX on the SSD without any problems? Thanks in advance :im Not Worthy:(Specs):Windows 7 64-bitASUS V-P8H61EIntel Core I7 2600k @ 3.4GHzATI Radeon HD 57708GB RAM1 TB HDD 7200RPM

1. General load times and texture load times in game are shorter.2. Yes.

Actual game play is completely unaffected by an SSD. I installed FSX on my SSD initially, but saw no difference other than load times, and so I moved FSX back to the mechanical drive and installed the OS on the SSD.

I dont doubt your result Corey but I dont understand why loading was not faster for you.My FSX used to takes ages to load but the current installation takes about rwenty seconds. An experiment is required I think.

I did some tests as follows:1) Copied FSX installation to Spinpoint F1 and renamed disk to match SSD name (temporarily renamed SSD). Restarted PC2) Start FSX with Spinpoint.Time to load FSX to Free Flight screen: 67 secondsTime to load selected flight (PMDG 737NGX. UK2000 EGKK etc.etc): 61 seconds.3) Exit FSX. Make second attempt:Time to load FSX to Free Flight screen: 10 secondsTime to load selected flight (PMDG 737NGX. UK2000 EGKK etc.etc): 35 seconds.4) Renamed SSD back to normal (renamed Spinpoint also). Restarted PC5) Start FSX with SSD.Time to load FSX to Free Flight screen: 22 secondsTime to load selected flight (PMDG 737NGX. UK2000 EGKK etc.etc): 34 seconds.6) Exit FSX. Make second attempt:Time to load FSX to Free Flight screen: 9 secondsTime to load selected flight (PMDG 737NGX. UK2000 EGKK etc.etc): 31 seconds. Feel free to speculate over Xmas. Total Installation size: 95Gb.

What will you ever do with that saved minute you get every time you start FSX?!

I can just get a small bottle of beer in (and not be over the limit)

That is an excellent answer!!

And this sums up my feelings about the entire SSD subject. Until price per GB is much cheaper, I'll stick with my clunky HDD. I absolutely can't justify spending 10 times p/GB the price of an HDD to save myself the amount of time it takes me to walk through the house. That's why I sold my 250GB Intel SSD.I remember some goober in here telling me "time is money" for his argument. Well yes, yes it is.

I am with you on that one. I currently have 4 ea SataII hard drives in my system, plenty of storage space, and they are certainly fast enough for me. FSX takes just about 30 seconds to get to the main screen, and after loading a flight about another 30-45 seconds and I am in the cockpit. I feel no need for that to be faster for me.Maybe if I had a ton of photo scenery and it was taking several minutes to load, then I might feel differently.I expect some day I will move to an SSD , at least for my system drive, perhaps when I move to a newer platform and Windows 8, maybe kill 2 birds with 1 stone at that time. The thought of having to reinstall all my programs, along with FSX and my add ons, just to install an SSD certainly does not appeal to me.

I have in front of me a Microcenter add that lists the Samsung 256GB 830 for $229.00 -USD. Yeah, I know its a typo, but .... :-)Merry Christamas -to all those that celebrate.

Loading is faster. It's game play that is unaffected.

I might add that you do not defrag an SSD and that's something you will periodically have to do with a mechanical HD, especially when you first install the OS, FSX, Acceleration, and any huge addon.Best regards,Jim

I have 2 60gig ssd I bought a few weeks ago. I am thinking of moving my fsx install back to a 300gig sata2 hd purely because Fsx is currently 40gig and the load times are only noticeable difference.

My O&O software is set up to run only during the wee hours of the night, when not in use. Defragmenting really just isn't the hassle most make it out to be.
