Jefferson County: How's performance?

Featured Replies

I bought a bunch of Orbx airfields last week thanks to the sale, and originally I wasn't considering 0S9 but then when I saw how close it was to Diamond Point I thought I might as well go for it, to complete the area I guess. Admittedly I haven't flown around it much, as I've been busier with 2WA1, but something about it doesn't do it for me. The surrounding photoreal scenery is great, as Stephen mentioned the trailer park is a great little touch, but the airport itself feels dead. I don't fly with AI on because I don't like the FPS hit, but other Orbx fields manage to somehow make me feel like I'm not alone, like stuff is going on around me. I don't get that with Jefferson, it feels like a ghost town.

Cheers,

Wow! It's amazing how much perceptions can vary. Now admittedly, I DO fly with AI traffic, and Jefferson County has about as high a traffic volume as I've seen at an Orbx airport so that certainly has an impact, but even leaving that aside I've always felt that this was about the most lively airport in the Orbx catalog. Between the restaurant, the sherrif's car wandering around, the shop noise...

KBVS on the other hand... now THERE's a ghost town.

Don't forget the lawn tractor cutting the grass. I agree there is a lot of activity going on at 0S9. It is one of my favorites; however, it is at a cost on frames for me.

I've been doing some analysis of which PNW fields get comments on performance to see if there's a common factor .....there isn't

There is a common factor, I think, and it's a simple one everyone knows: proximity to Seattle. There's another factor as well: author. But the author of the worst performing PNW airport doesn't have any other PNW airports, so he isn't a "common" factor for this area. He is the author of a couple of the worst performing AU airports, though, at least on my system. .

Well to explain my "method", which is limited to the feedback given of course, I did a spreadsheet with name of field, good, average & poor fps columns and author. From the feedback here there were only individual comments on any field. The most prolific authors gained two fields as good fps and one with poor. Only Anacortes, Harvey and Jefferson got poor fps feedback although one feedback on Jefferson gave it average. Skagit got average too. However I stress this is based on the comments posted. 7 out of the 18 drew no feedback and 6 out of the 18 drew good fps comments. It's pretty obvious though that everyone's rig and slider positions is going to have as much impact as the authors creative input? Without a poll and some knowledge of the specs of machine that folk are running stuff on it's hard to draw any sensible conclusion?

I think almost everyone would agree on Anacortes - as I've said before it's the one Orbx airport I simply can't use on my system even after disabling every optional feature. But when you get into some of the in between places, you'll see enough variability that it's awfully hard to draw solid conclusions. For example, Skagit (average by your survey) is my second worst performer. Useable with most stuff turned off, but barely. Is this because I have Anacortes and that has an impact, is it configuration; something else? Is it just my system? Jefferson County on the other hand (rated on your spreadsheet the same as Anacortes), performs quite well for me - certainly worlds better than Anacortes - even with all the "flows" turned on, and I'm always surprised when people say they have issues there.

When it comes to the performance of almost anything in FSX, YMMV seems the only truism. :-)
