Any hardcore FSX simmers who also go hardcore XP10?

Featured Replies

Hi guys.Well first off: Well, I'm about to take the plunge to Xp10 (not to replace FSX at all, but more of a side hobby to my first hobby ;) ), but I'm reluctant because my main reason for taking the plunge is the CRJ200 by Jrollon, and I don't know much about it, and most importantly - I need some kind of reference to what I already have: A FSX running very smooth (very rare CDT) with an outstanding NGX to fly.Trying to find info and review on this CRJ200 (detailed reviews and not just the sales speaches) is kinda hard.So I would love to hear from someone who has already taken the plunge into XP10 and in particualry the CRJ200 (or any jetliner in fact - I wanna be flying the same way I do in FSX) on question and who can give his thoughts on the following:- I know the CRJ is not at PMDG system level, but will the hardcore simmer whi enjoys the level of PMDG still be satisfied with the level of simulation? I'm thinking especially about the FMS and AP functions such as VNAV, LNAV and all the bells and whistels...- Judging from me system spec, would I have XP10 running in a manner, that will allow me to have atleast the same level of graphics as in FSX?- (and this is a strike of luck if able to answer all three, I know) I hear alot of fuss regarding hardware (CH, Saitek etc) and that it is hard to make it function correctly with XP10? I rellay love how I got my Saitek set up with the NGX and FSUIPC, where I can assign buttons to many things - can one do that in XP10 and CRJ?Any comments are also very welcome, in fact if you run both FSX and XP10, let med hear your thoughts...Mas

@mas618Can't comment about the CRJ200 as I am a GA person, but as for the joystick/yoke setup, it is not difficult at all. The native UI for Joystick & Equipment really give you a lot of options, and although I have heard a number of people complain about the interface, I find it quite intuitive and easy to use. I was really surprised at some of the people that couldn't seem figure out the interface without help from various developers, some using Skype and they were supposed to be programmers too??? I rather have my suspensions about the validity of their posts. :Phbbbt:There is also a plugin for X-Plane called XUIPC that takes the place of FSUIPC, I haven't found the need for it, as I can assign nearly a hundred options, ( I haven't actually counted them), in the native UI so haven't found the need to explore it. I do have it just in case I should ever find the need :(

Flying is the 2nd greatest thrill known to man

The 1st is landing.

I dont have the CRJ, but its on my radar for the future. I like complex aircraft, but right now there is so much to learn with xplane itself, I dont want to take on too much at once. Im having fun learning xplane and when I get to that point where Im comfortable with it, Ill get the the CRJ. Im still using FSX and enjoy the NGX a lot too. However, both FSX and Xplane co-exist peacefully on my machine and I enjoy them both. One thing, I found with Xplane is the default planes were not showing off what xplane really has to offer. If you try xplane, pick up at least one addon plane that interests you and give it a fair shot. Xplane really has a lot to offer and I myself, made the mistake early on with the demo to shun it because I didnt spend enough time setting it up for my hardware. My advice to those coming from FSX and wanting to give xplane a shot:-- Take your time setting up your joystick/yoke and other hardware. It will take several tries untill you get things set to your liking.-- Set everything low and work up from there until you have a good balance between what looks good and FPS.-- Most important: Have an open mind. Its a work in progress and a great start IMO. Dont focus on just the things that dont work well yet, Look at what it does right and know that it is going to get better with time.-- Its not FSX, so things dont follow the same logic. You almost have to flush a lot of that out of your head when using Xplane. Lots of new key commands to learn! The more I use Xplane, the more I see how differently its focused from FSX. With FSX, I get a lot of eye candy stuff like people walking around the airports. Trucks on the airfields servicing planes etc.. In those senerios, FSX looks great! But once you get up there, thats where Xplane really takes the lead for me. I feel like Im flying a plane better and the scenery looks better at altidude. Weather is also really nice in Xplane. These are the things that really count for me in a simulator. Although I like the eye candy stuff, GSX, Orbx and Fly Tampa stuff (for example) is amazing! but It doesnt add anything to the feeling of flight and thats the whole point of doing this.(for me)Rob

I completely agree with Rob. I do have the CRJ, and it's a very good aircraft. Flies beautifully, and has a great model. Systems-wise not as advanced as the PMDG NGX, but is a step forward in terms of what has been done in X-Plane, and hopefully will pave the way for more aircraft like it.I agree with your observations on the eye-candy. I really get immersed in FSX with a high detail airport with moving people and baggage carts, but whatever scenery I use as soon as I climb to cruising altitude in an airliner the scenery below turns into a blurry mess. Not in X-Plane, where it remains beautifully sharp. Hopefully in time the eye-candy will appear as new add ons are developed. At the moment I, like you, am across both platforms because neither for me is perfect. However I do think the future is bright for X-Plane.

@ DonaldThats good news - couldn't beleive it should be that diffucult, although when you've been messing around with MFS for 10 years, you get kinda stuck in thier way of thinking I guess. I'm not using a homecockpit or anything, so I suspect I'll be well of with the default options that XP10 provide.@CommancheThx again for your insights. I really find your observations encouraging, because the little eyecandystuff we see today in FSX was not there in the beginning - remember? How FSX looked like the 1st day - not really that good... All those things will come - and they'll be coming fast if you ask me...Aslo, I really see your point in not getting a very complex add-on from the get-go. I also tried the demo, but ran my head in the wall because I expected to go flying within 10 minutes or so. I hadn't even found the view switch in the first 10 minutes - so I guess you really have to take a deep breath and start from scratch...And about the scenery from high altitutes - that's where I really find FSX missing out - my God a country can look boring from FL370 - really sad, so to see something new in XP10 sounds so needed.@TomGreat stuuf on the CRJ - I didn't expect it to be up there with NGX, but as you said, it has set the bar pretty high pretty early in the race, so I guess we'll see higher standards very soon... I think I'll have to run XP10 sort of like a side buisness to FSX for a year or so, and just enjoy to see it develop!Thx all of you for your thoughts!Mas
