February 27, 201214 yr HiI recently bought myself a new gigabyte MBO (X79-UD4) bundle which included a 3.2 I7 3930k along with 16 gig of memory. For about two weeks now I have been running it at factory settings which has been quite stable, only deciding today to have a go at over clocking it I had a go and changed the settings to run the processor at 4 GHz and changes all setting accordingly, after starting FSX it must have only lasted 10 seconds before my pc rebooted, I also ran a bench test and the same happened. Why this is happening is now beyond me so I reset everything back to default, I even tried easytune 6 which came with my MBO which is described as a beginners guide to over clocking, the exact same thing happened, for some reason my processor just does not want to be over clocked. Is it possible it might have been over clocked prior to being fitted on the MBO and is already at its max, but then why come with software that would lead you to believe it can go further. Thanks Shaun
February 27, 201214 yr Moderator Shaun - each system is different. You don't just change some settings and away you go. You take it in small steps - testing for stability after each change until you reach the limit of your particular system. Do some googling on overclocking to get a better idea of what is involved and go from there.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
February 28, 201214 yr Can i overclock my GTX 580 ive done the CPU 20% increase goodis there any real gain doing the card. Any advice how too. or should i just leave it alone or you will break it!!!! It helps keep a few extra frames while using my 8xS 2xSGS settings. Honestly, I can't see needing an overclock on your GPU. The manual describes what you have to do which is simply select 1 of 3 choices to simply improve performance on your machine and when selected it supposedly makes the changes within the bios for you but for some reason my pc will still crash as if it has been set up wrong.Shaun
February 28, 201214 yr Moderator Ok, if that's the case, I'd call the manufacturer Tech support. Out of the box, it should take the simple easy tune clock. Don't waste any time - call them asap..Vic I run my GPU overclocked regularly while using FSX and around heavy weather (I fly real world weather exclusively). February 28, 201214 yr Author Hi VicI took your advice and did so today, although they were reluctant to support their products being over clocked but did suggest that from the sounds of it they believed the cpu might be over heating and suggested buying a better heat sink. They said that all their products are tested before going out the shop but are only tested under normal running conditions and are not put under any stress. So off to the shops we go again. Shaun
February 28, 201214 yr Here's an idea: test the CPU to see what temperature it is encountering during operation. You can use a utility like Intel Burn Test or OCCT to test your CPU. Temperatures in excess of 80 degrees C should be cause for concern, especially if they are encountered within a very short period of time (say a few seconds). Tip: don't go buying hardware because of a guess offered by phone support.
February 28, 201214 yr Author Hi techguy ok. I ran OCCT and after about 20 seconds i had Donald duck quacking at me telling me I had cpu errors detected. Haven't a clue what they all mean. It produced a load of images telling me where the problems are but don't understand. Thanks Shaun
February 28, 201214 yr Author Hi I run the OCCT again and this time it run all the way through but i noticed that it is only clocking the CPU at 3.5. I will try and run the other programme and see what happens. Shaun
February 28, 201214 yr Check out the X79-D3 review on Anandtech, specifically on page 2 where he writes about difficulties overclocking on this board.I knew nothing about OC'ing when I built my rig last summer, but I got all the help I needed in the forums at overclock.net. A very friendly place where you don't have to be afraid to ask noob questions. Lots of helpful people and excellent advice. - Jev McKee, AVSIM member since 2006.
