Nvidia Surround or TH2go Digital

Featured Replies

Maybe someone else has experimented on using the two. Wondering if there is a noticeable performance difference between the two? DId a search on comparisms, but the only information came from Nvidia Surrounds launch and the drivers were not stable at the time and there was alot of confusion between NV3d and Surround.I have GTX 480s in SLI, but the TH2GO requires SLI be disabled. Sooo I have a GTX480 doing nothing (not that FSX benefits from SLI). Anybody chuck TH2GO for Nvida's Surround?

You are going to get better performance out of a TH2GO. I've been using one for three years. Read the comparison in the link below, and keep in mind that I have not experienced the TH2GO issues that he talks about. If you have one, make sure you update the firmware, as it fixes quite a few issues.

Doesn't the TH2GO make use of SLI?

The above review shows benchmarks using two GTX560s in SLI with the Matrox.

You didn't understand that article properly, the TH2GO only out performs the Nvidia surround setup when the two Nvidia cards are run in SLI mode then output via a digital TH2GO to the three monitors. You shouldn't use FSX in SLI mode, it will perform worse, that is a well known fact.

Cheers, Andy.

I am well aware of that. I don't run SLI with FSX.

Referring to a review of multi-monitor solutions based on 3D Vantage when talking about FSX performance seems rather strange as it as no relevance whatsoever.

Having used Eyefinity, TH2GO (digital), Nvidia Surround mode and SoftTH extensively (in FSX), without going into details again I can say that my personal experience is that surround mode is the clear winner.

Tolip -- would you suggest the Nvidia 680? It allows you to have a triple output on one card. Would this work well for 3x projector outputs projecting at 3840x800 (180 degrees) and would 2GB video ram be sufficient?

Thanks,

Ben

Don't you have to run Nvidia cards in SLI to get them to span across 3 monitors? I'm confused.

You can get a 6xxGTX and run 4 monitors off one card. Been there, done that. Without going into much details, nVidia Surround runs circles around TH2GO for ease of use/setup. Performance wise, I would say it's equal.

Here is a post I made on another thread where someone asked a similar question. I'm on my phone and don't want to type much unless I'm trolling. LMAO

It's comparable because either way, you will be pumping mad pixels. What native resolutions are your monitors/projectors? Having used both options myself, I must say that nVidia Surround runs circles around TH2GO Digital. The bezel management on Surround is much better because you get to still use the entire screen on the 2 corner monitors.

With TH2GO, the bezel is compensated for by scrolling or shifting the screen right on the left monitor and left on the right monitor, which leaves a large vertical black bar on the edges of the outer monitors. This does not happen with Surround at the expense of more pixels but with the 680, the trade off is well worth it.

I was running Surround at 6000ish x 1200 on three 24" Dell monitors and it was awesome. At such higher resolutions, you can lower AA and you can gain back the FPS lost to running a higher resolution without affecting much IQ.

I was using both DVI ports and I had a HDMI -> DVI video cable connected to the HDMI port. Never tried the DisplayPort.

To answer your question no you don't run the cards in SLI mode, you run them in surround mode, two screens run off one card and one off another.

Cheers, Andy.

Do you guys know what the performance will be like running 2x 1080p outputs from the GTX 680? Will performance be more dependent on CPU or will the GPU struggle?

I know there are not that many short throw 1080p projectors out at the moment, but I am planning to run a dual projector 180 degree setup one day and would rather use 1080p resolution vs 720 (800).

Perhaps the GTX 460 is different but in order for me to activate surround mode (2 monitors off one card and 1 off the other) I have no choice but to run in SLI mode, that's how the two cards produce one large screen. Unless I'm missing something.

Now that I understand, if all monitors (3) run off of one card and there is no need to activate surround to multiple cards then SLI can be disabled.

thanks

Jim, take a look at this -- http://www.zotacusa.com/zotac-displayport-to-dual-hdmi-adaptor.html

Nvidia used to have trouble running dual screens, but I think this adaptor fixes it.
