Symbolic linking FSX to an SSD drive

Featured Replies

The Ultimate Solution - hock your car and buy a 784Gb SSD and you'll only need one drive. My whole FSX file system contains 254Gb of data so I have approx 225Gb left over - man that's a whole lot of space left. Problem solved.fb
Actually, I tried to sell my car, but it would still not be enough to get a 784Gb SSD. My Pinto has been defined as old, and not as classic. I was hjoping it would be a "classic" but, nay. :(

Hi Word Not Allowed, these SSD sure are expensive,eh? I went shopping yesterday and boy they are pricey. However, after doing some research I realize the benefit of these drives- light years faster than the mechanical drives. Now, here's a question I have for us FSXers: Do we still need, say 2 SSD's ?... One for the OS and all FSX on the other SSD? Or, placing everything on one large SSD be a good idea?

Need? You don't need SSD. It's a matter of faster loading. If you wish to throw out lots of money to have faster loading times in FSX, by all means.

I have an SSD for each and really like it. Does it help FSX performance? Don't know, but it sure is fast and smooth. My problem is that my FSX SSD is nearly full with only 15% left.Kind regards,

Stephen, how big is your FSX?

This brings up another issue. With mechanical drives you start to lose efficiency when they are about 50% full. With SSD's this doesn't occur until they are about 90% full so there is an additional benefit if your main concern is performance. And other than bragging rights, I can see no other reason to buy an SSD except performance.Vic

My installed FSX is a little over 100g, but have that much again in uninstalled sceneries, aircraft and utilities that there is no room for. So, many of my Caronado, Real Air, all of my Captain Sims, plus numerous other payware ga and tubeliners, all my various UTX and GEX sceneries, world wide mesh and landclasses, and major payware airports and regions, plus tons of freeware are left uninstalled. I have myself in a box that is bursting at the seams. Not sure what to do about it either.

I don't know either, but I am glad I have SSDs, if only they were bigger.Kind regards,

Mine is little over 200, and I couldn't imagine having something I paid for not being able to use. But, that's me. That is why I opted for WD and not SSD. I know the speed difference of the SSD, I really know. I'm crying for it. But I settled for "less is more" :(

Ditto! I have the VRaps also. With my system and I suspect yours the question becomes how much of an improvement will you get and is the cost worth it?Vic

The OCZ 484Gb SSD sells for $650 (NewEgg). Someone mentioned performance - YUP! Its just like having your entire FSX folder in memory - way fast and sooooooooo smooth. As for putting other things on the drive - what for? Put Windows on a fast Raptor 10,000rpm drive for between $200 and $300. Now you're cookin'. You can even keep your Pinto classic.fb

It´s been mentioned before: SSD Caching!I really don´t know why people will not listen and try it out, it´s perfect with a fast WD 1 TB Black 64 Mb 6 Gb/s harddisk.."How much performance can you expect to gain by using Smart Response Technology? We tested the technology on a system equipped with a Core i7-2600K processor, 4GB of RAM, a WD Raptor hard drive, and a 20GB Intel solid-state drive, all running under Windows 7 Ultimate x64. With SRT disabled, the system posted a PCMark Vantage score of 12,138. With SRT acceleration enabled, the machine operating in Enhanced mode, and the entire 20GB capacity of the SSD used for SRT, the system's PCMark Vantage score jumped to 16,563. And with SRT operating in Maximized mode, performance in PCMark Vantage increased to 16,582--a boost of about 36 percent over the system's performance without SRT. What the numbers don't convey is the speedier feel of the system. The SSD's shorter access times and quicker transfers resulted in a much snappier and more responsive system than you'd get with a hard drive alone. The difference is like night and day."http://www.pcworld.com/article/248828/how_to_set_up_intel_smart_response_ssd_caching_technology.html

"Dissecting" There is no question as to how good SDDs are- yes they're at a huge advantage over the non-SS Drives. However, what matter to us (flight simming world) is obviously how much does it helps improve fps in FSX. Of what I've read here in the forums, some say it helps a bit; others say not one bit; and, still others will say a lot. And, As Vic pointed out a couple of post above: "Is the cost worth it?" This is a good question. I just got 2 SSDs-yesterday-, and have barely started assembling them on my case. Some posts make me want to remove it and return it (I have 14 days). Other posts make me want to keep them. I currently have 2 WD 10,000rpm HD...Does the job well. However, we keep looking at ways as to how to improve our FSX performance- not only for the experience but strongly for the performance...and this is where the SDD dsicussions comes in. Ivy Bridge: Adding a bit to improving our FSX performance; another piece of hardware which I believe will be in another "gray" area will be the new Ivy Bridge. This is not an official statement but more of a result of research. Of what I have discovered in several tech sites is that Ivy will "only" be about 5-15% improvement over Sandy...If this is true, I think we're in for a disappointment. FSX requires much more than just a 5% (or 15%) improvement. Again, the question will be is it worth to switch?...We'll see! Currently, Sandy generally remains stable at or around 4.80Ghz. Yes, you can achieve up to 5.20Ghz OC (and stable), but honestly you get no improvement in FPS.(And this is not only me but most posters). So, we end up bringing it down to 4.60-4.80Ghz. Yes, at 5.20Ghz you may see much improvement with other games, but sadly with FSX we don't get that improvment. So, we hope hardware does get significant better in the near future--and affordable, of course !Johnny

FSX is a Tyrannosaurus rex!We try to beat a dead animal from precambrian ages up to year 2012 performance, and that´s not possible, the code is old, the whole game is weird, it´s unfinished. But hey, you know what I did today?Inspired by Mitch, the ever so positive simmer, I flew some Missions in FSX, and it was awesome!Try it, when you have the two SSD´s installed...Enjoy, that´s what it is all about, eh? :(
