Symbolic linking FSX to an SSD drive

Featured Replies

Hi there, I bought an SSD drive (only 60 Gb, it can't fit everything) and have moved several subdirectories within the FSX folder to the SSD -- folders include --Addon SceneryGaugesORBXSimObjectsAre there any other important files (and folders) that are accessible frequently by FSX which you think might be beneficial to move to the SSD?

Hi mateI have the Agility 3 ssd.not sure what you mean.are you going to put your OS and fsx on to it??or you have a big fsx install and it won't all fit.I have my os on a vertex 2 and fsx only on the agility 3 which is a 60gb that takes up 39gb of it leaving me a bit of room for addons.I do put things like GEX europe and usa/canada and the backup textures on another HDD because once they are loaded you don't need to access them.the SSD does speed loading so well worth buying . steve-0

My scenery folder is 11 gb (gulp). Will try and put it on and see if it improves startup speeds.

I have the OCZ agililty 3 as well, but my FSX install is over 80 GB so I can't fit it all on the SSD, so instead I'm only shifting my most accessible files. Where are all the backup files saved?

And mine is 12.576.843.142.bytes :( . Not only start-up, you should see some overall improvement.

Wow, moving scenery to the SSD made all the difference. Faster load up times, excellent. Now I've used up all my SSD space :( Maybe I should invest in SRT technology...

Now I've used up all my SSD space :(
The downside of an SSD.I would look into moving Aircraft and Photoscenery, ORBX included. Rest is not that heavy.

How much are aircraft files accessed while you are flying?I'm planning to do something similar, I have two SSDs in raid0 with my OS at the moment, but I plan to do change that so one SSD has my OS, the other one has FSX and what is most accessed during flight, and the rest on my velociraptor (which has all of FSX right now). My plan was basically to put the base FSX program and scenery on the SSD, and keep my aircraft on my velociraptor, since all of it won't fit on my SSD. My thinking was that FSX doesn't need to touch the aircraft files as much during flight, though I don't know if that is true?

RAID0 on SATA3 is also pretty cool and not so expensive solution and one almost has no chance for running out of space. I have six 500GB WD disks in three pairs - one pair for the OS, next pair for FSX itself and third for big scenery files. Loading and overall performance of FS X is noticeably improved when compared with the same hardware but not in RAID0. I think that at least gauges are "touched" quite heavily all of the time and on many aircraft gauges are held within the panel folder. Also sound folder is "visited" on regular basis. The rest(model and texture) is probably indeed loaded only once.

Confused: Seriously, I am confunsed as to how to set what on which HD. I currently have 2 HD WD 10,000rpm. One has the OS and all other software; the other HD has FSX and all add-ons. So my dedicated 320Gb FSX HD is almost full. If I get a third HD (whetehr it be ssd or another WD 10,000rpm), here is where I am confused: How and what do you place on the third HD; or how do you make FSX works with different folders in different 3 drives....Do I just copy and paste eg. all Megasecenry to the third drive? How is this done among three diffrent HD ?-- I am looking to improve my load times, as well.

If you are going to move scenery:Remove the scenery in the FS Scenery Library. FS will rebuild it's databases.Move the scenery folders to the new drive.Add the scenery back into the FS Scenery Library. FS will rebuild it's databases.

I use a program called Link Shell Extention that enables you to effectively cut and paste FSX directories onto another drive and leave on the orginal drive a symbolic link that points to the new location. Its all built into the Explorer right click menus so its dead easy to use.Google for it, lots of sites have it for download.

@Johnny767:No need to be confused, with two disks you have optimal distribution of files. If you purchase the third disk, then it would be sensible if you'd move BIG scenery files (photo scenery can be GB just like that) to the third disk. And another hint: do not use whole disk as a single partition. Windows tend to scatter files all over if you let them :-), so making some partitions that are just big enough or a bit bigger than planned amount of your files does some good things: prevents scattering of files all over the physical surface of a 500 or more G Bytes, fragmentation doesn't have such disastrous effect and even if defragmentation is needed, defragmentation of 50 GB takes considerably less than whole 500 or more and is more effective and if you(and you should) use first small partition of each disk it's much faster than simple one-partition-per-disk concept. Of course using just big enough partitions means careful planning of what must and what you'd wish to have installed, you may find yourself running out of free space on a certain partition easily.Sounds like a lot of work, but it's worth the effort. Why would you want 3 disks in your system? Think of your CPU as being a swimming pool of a certain volume. Think of your hard disk, signal cable and SATA controller as hose that's filling your pool - - ->More hoses, quicker the filling rate. And even mid-range CPU is capable of processing more data than regular SATA2 or even SATA3 disks can deliver, resulting in stutters in FSX. So with OS on one disk, FS X on second and scenery files on third, you are filling your pool with three hoses.

Hi Andrej,I appreciate your input. However, I have a question on your second--and last- paragraph. Are you saying that using the 3 HD is a better idea?..I believe the answer is yes....If yes, I am thinking of placing all scenery files on that third HD...All Megasecebery and ORBX. So, if I use that third HD for scencery add-ons, do I just create a new folder and name it "Scenery" and connect all HD to my motherboard, and that't it; or do I delete the :secenery" folder from the FSX HD, also...Sorry , never done this, and want to make sure I get it right.-----And , I appreciate the rest of yuo guys, as well !

With three disks that have identical performance it makes no sense to move folder scenery from within FSX folder structure, especially so if you're not experienced with this. Configuration with three identical disks is different situation from the one that OmniAtlas has, where he has one small but significantly faster disk and he was wondering, which files from within FSX folder he should move to his fastest but smallest disk.Do not move any sub-folders of FSX if you're not sure what you're doing, you can cause re-instal of everything! In my previous post I was referring to scenery as various addons - additional high quality airports, whole countries or big areas covered with photo-real tiles and so on. This additional sceneries tend to be big in size and it makes sense to put them on the first (fastest) partition of the third disk if first partitions of first and second disk contain the operating system and FSX.
