March 20, 201214 yr Hello,Has anyone successfully used Flight with nVidia 3D surround? Does it work well, or are there glaring glitches?I am thinking about adding a couple of monitors to my 3D Vision (single monitor) setup, for use with Flight as well as other games, but it's the impact with Flight that would actually push me to do it.Thanks for any advice!SF
March 20, 201214 yr I've done it on the AMD end of things w/ an Eyefinity setup. (same concept as 3D Surround). It works well if you have a good high end graphics card but for me not enough games properly render in these Eyefinity/3D Vision setups to make it a good investment (imo). You can see the problem here in this shot well. (click to go to options for fullsize)Your image out each outside monitor will be stretched out (ie: Look at the clouds at the left or right). This is fixable in games that let you adjust the FOV and some other finer image control settings but too many games don't give such an option.Coincidently enough yesterday I did away with this setup and replaced them all with one big 40inch 1080p LED TV instead.. Eyefinity/3D Surround is great when the game properly takes advantage of it but too many times you will find yourself diving into config files to make it render correctly. After a year of this setup the novelty just wore off and drew up the conclusion it just isn't worth it yet. March 21, 201214 yr Author Your image out each outside monitor will be stretched out (ie: Look at the clouds at the left or right). This is fixable in games that let you adjust the FOV and some other finer image control settings but too many games don't give such an option. Thanks a lot for the info and pics, styckx! Maybe it's just the wow factor of a big wide image, but the panoramic you posted looks amazing to me. I see the distorted clouds, but I wonder if the immersion factor would overcome the graphical quirks.Did you find that the peripheral vision was more immersive, contributed to more natural ways of judging when to turn final for landings (for example), and perhaps made the sensation of flight more compelling? These are the factors that would push me to invest in 2 more 27" 3D monitors. If it's just an interesting novelty, but doesn't really "do" much, then I can probably come up with something else to do with those $$.Thanks again for your insights!
March 21, 201214 yr You definitely get MUCH wider field of view. There is definitely more immersion than a single normal widescreen monitor.Screencaps from the cockpit..http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/60061162@N05/6957207925/in/photostream/ ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING / i9-9900k @ 4.7 all cores w/ NOCTUA NH-D15S / 2080ti / 32GB G.Skill 3200 RIPJAWS / 1TB Evo SSD / 500GB Evo SSD / 2x 3TB HDD / CORSAIR CRYSTAL 570X / IPSG 850W 80+ PLATINUM / Dual 4k Monitors
March 21, 201214 yr Author You definitely get MUCH wider field of view.Wow! Thanks for posting those pics.I wonder if anyone is running a 3D version of that. I guess it must be possible, since single monitor 3D works (though with some odd artifacts at the screen edges).
March 21, 201214 yr Hi styckx,Does the panoramic view helps landing on the Hilo tower easier? :Hypnotized: I am seriously considering setting up one if it helps in extremely flying. I will be getting my first 27 inch Samsung 3D monitor this weekend. :D This monitor has a relatively thin framing and I figure it is good for future expansion to 3 units with thinner seams between the 3 monitors. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_cSQR-scbpxaMauagnsU5A http://www.twitch.tv/fastcheetah702/profile
March 21, 201214 yr It doesn't really help per say in flying at all. It helps in just being able to see more of your surroundings. It's basically adding a big element of peripheral vision that otherwise is lost playing on a single monitor.EDIT: I should add this.. The biggest peice of advice to anyone considering doing this. DO NOT buy monitors in addition to what you already have.. If you are going triple monitors buy all 3 at once and verify they are in the same manufacturing date.. The main reason is you need to make sure your color range and backlighting between all 3 is as close to being the same as possible. Mix matching will cause nightmares as will buying a monitor one month, then saving up and buy two more a few months down the road etc.. All it takes is one hardware revision with a component in the monitor and you will most likely have color range and backlight variations that will either require hours upon hours of painstaking adjusting or it could be something that just isn't correctable at all. March 21, 201214 yr I've done it on the AMD end of things w/ an Eyefinity setup. (same concept as 3D Surround)no its not the same concept as 3d surround..3d surround is actual 3d with glasses etc. not just multi monitor
March 21, 201214 yr After a year of this setup the novelty just wore off and drew up the conclusion it just isn't worth it yet. This is exactly what happened to me. I got rid of my monitors 3 months ago. It got out of hand and the framerates in FSX were awful.A single screen setup is less hassle IMHO.
March 21, 201214 yr To anyone considering multi monitor. In FSX, you can break out panels, radios, etc. to other monitors and it is very useful. However, if you are just seeking to expand the view out the window, then consider track ir.It is much less costly and more functional. Of course, neither will help with Flight until support is added.
March 22, 201214 yr Author I have trackIR, and love it. In fact, I'll probably still use it with the 3 monitor setup if I end up going that route. TrackIR adds realism and immersion, to a point, but I still can't help but think that peripheral vision would be even better. Combine that with the depth of 3D, and... I'm just dreaming now, aren't I...?
March 22, 201214 yr I'm not sure if both options would work well together as the camera can only see so much. It doesn't take much head movement to go out of range. I've used multi monitors for the panels and stacks so that it was easier to manipulate knobs and switches without having to hold my head super steady to use the VC!
