March 20, 201214 yr I`m able to perfectly land the Icon, RV6, and the Stearman. but i can not handle the Maule during landing.Chances are higer to maker a "softer" landing when the aircraft has overweight an d i am on a long runway. But i never managed it to do a real soft landing, only accidentally.During flare out i hit the ground to hard, or i`m climbing again and then the runway gets short, especially on short fields. How to do a good flare out and land the Maule soft?
March 20, 201214 yr To land the Maule properly requires you to pay more attention to your instruments then what is outside of the window. It's very easy to get the sensation you're making a shallow dive when in fact you're probably in a shallow climb so by the time you're over the threshold you're fighting to keep it in the air and when you do flare you're actually flaring a plane that is already 'flared' and drop like a rock. ie: You're going too slow. Pay attention to the attitude indicator during your entire approach. I've found the Maule very easy to land now with some practice. And use your trim! It's very important during landings and takeoffs. March 20, 201214 yr Try to ajust the airplane (center to runway and speed ajustments) farther from the airport...remember to maintain a fairly stable rate of descend and than ajust the descend rate with the throttle (more speed, less descend...), just use the joystick over the runway to pitch the nose up a bit for a smooth touchdown!
March 20, 201214 yr You can do a wheel landing but the 3 pointer is best if you can pull it off. Needs much practice. Easy does it, just a light touch.
March 20, 201214 yr When the Maule is insanely overweight I 100% of the time stick to the two point landing. You need to be going faster than a normal weight landing to maintain good lift and a level attitude. All that weight pushes the rear of the plane down and if you try to do a typical standard slow three point landing you will more than likely hammer on the gear falling onto the runway. You're also more than likely to miss the runway as your nose will be raised so far above your line of site you will be guessing where the runway is. Coming in faster when you're heavy allows you to better balance out the attitude of the plane while being able to maintain a perfectly controllable glide slope and in turn see the runway perfect. Again.. Trim is your best friend in the Maule.. Use it! :)When the plane is at or below it's max weight threshold I stick to the nice and slow three point landing. March 20, 201214 yr If you've got the runway for it, I find it easiest to come in between 60 and 70 kts and flaps at 40º (extended two notches), then level off a few feet from the runway, cut the throttle, and settle in. The lower speed and fully extended flaps the checklist tells you to do seem more for short landings, and those tend more often to be pretty rough (for me at least).
March 21, 201214 yr Thanks guys. Great info about the Maule landing technique.I have been getting all sort of agonizing gestures from the pax all the time when I land the Maule. Seems that my landing skill in the Maule needs improvement. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_cSQR-scbpxaMauagnsU5A http://www.twitch.tv/fastcheetah702/profile
