April 2, 201214 yr Thought I'd have a stab at it. Didn't bother with any plates for it or bother to look up navaids, I just took off from there in the Evo Wilco 737-500 with about 20 percent fuel and flew to where the approach looks like it started, then turned around and went for it. Not bad for a first go under those circumstances, had to slip it a bit to get on the centreline at the very last second, but you'll see that on the vid. Anyway, the FRAPS video of it is currently uploading to youtube, I'll update this post with a link to it when it has completed. Give it a whirl in a jetliner, it's good fun, and it'll be entertaining to see everyone's efforts at it. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
April 3, 201214 yr Pretty darn good there, Al! More or less right on the center line. It's pretty cool when you see a thread like this, start up the YouTube player and recognize the approach. I've done this several times in FS9 with the iFly (no autopilot because autopilot is obviously more of a handicap here than an aid) and each time I was frustrated because I felt there was no way that this could be the right way to approach. And here's confirmation that it is . . . dang I'm good! :Nail Biting: :Just Kidding: :Just Kidding: Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. April 3, 201214 yr Yup, it was about as near to the centreline as one could hope, although If I'm honest, I'd say it was 50/50 luck versus judgement, then again, I'd rather be lucky than good, any day of the week. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
April 3, 201214 yr Author Tried it in the Super VC10. The take-off was fine except I had a bird strike just after rotation with a subsequent fire in eng. no.2 so nothing for it but to return!! April 3, 201214 yr Quite a feat to get a VC-10 down on there I would think. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
April 4, 201214 yr Author Quite a feat to get a VC-10 down on there I would think. Al Not really! It was designed for high altitude fields!! vololiberista Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
April 4, 201214 yr Well that's true, the BOAC design criteria being part of why it wasn't as popular as it perhaps should have been, but it nevertheless wasn't designed for scraping the ground with its wingtips on steep turns 20 seconds prior to touchdown LOL Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
April 4, 201214 yr Author No true! But it's still one of the few airliners that still stays airborne whilst flying on its wingtips!!!! The RAF show off that capability quite frequently! vooliberista Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
April 4, 201214 yr Operating here is a challenge for sure. Flying between all the mountain peaks is like a trench run at times! If you can time the turns just right and get lined up in time, landing here is manageable - but its really easy to muck it all up. I've visited Paro before (in FS9 ) in my PT Tu-154, but it was a while ago. Being inspired by this thread and Al's video I came back for a practice run at just after dawn: For the Tupolev it takes over 3/4ths of the Paro runway to stop. Its not just a nightmare landing here - Taking-off is tricky too. Depending on the weight load, it can take most of the runway and I have to make some gentile turns ASAP after rotating, in order to avoid some of the surrounding peaks (some of which go up to 18,000 ft):
April 5, 201214 yr Yup, I would say it is easier to get into the place than it is to get out of it! It could potentially be marginal if you had to abort a take off right at V1. Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here

April 5, 201214 yr Commercial Member I tried it the other night in the default 737-800, took me three tries but I finally got it on the ground. Probably wouldn't have been so hard if I'd off loaded a little fuel, I loaded the default 172 at Paro. slewed up to 18,000 ft and then switched to the 737, which loaded with the ctr tank full and 80% in the wing tanks. Guess I could have flown to New Delhi and back to burn off some fuel but the pax were pretty restless as it was so we had to make it in without delay. Pretty much greased it on once I got the approach figured out. First time I've flown a tube in months . What scenery(s) are you using there in the vid Alan? I have just plain FSX default for that area and it sure doesn't look anything like your video. I had a nice scenery for Paro in FS9, payware from "pop" I believe, and very nice. I didn't think there was an FSX version though. In the RW vid it shows them spinning the 737 around on the runway for back-taxi, I tried it in the sim and wound up out in the field, lol... Oh well, all in all it was really a fun time in the sim for an hour or so, thanks for the suggestion vololiberista Jim

Jim I would think so, what with them all of a sudden being slewed up to 18,000! Personally, I would have made "loose doodies" in my pants!! Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B.
