April 5, 201214 yr Author As I mentioned above I had an engine fire in the Super immediately after rotation!!! That really made life interesting. fortunately I know the drills by heart so it was doable. The only thing that was not possible is that the rwy is not wide enough for the VC10 to turn round and backtrack. vololiberista Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
April 5, 201214 yr Well, in that case you were lucky that it was an engine fire and not an engine failure, so the engine kept pushing until you were at a safe altitude to start the fire drill....

Just curious: What generated the bird strike in Flight Sim? FSPax? FSX? No actually I had to shut down the engine! But, fortunately it was no.2 so there was very little loss in lateral control. The engine fire/bird strike was activated by the coding in the model as part of the panel updates I posted on Avsim. There is another one due in the coming days with full on oxygen management complete with depressurisation scenarios and risk of hypoxia blackout. April 5, 201214 yr Looks like Queenstown! Another favorite flight of mine. Anyway, just attempted this in the MD-82, and it was very fun. And interesting. Came in to low, nearly hit the ground and landed before the threshold \: Not exactly a greaser, but it was on the ground and the touchdown itself wasn't too bad! :P
April 5, 201214 yr actually I had to shut down the engine! Of course, but as IRL you don't shut a burning engine down immediately (e.g. during take off rotation), you can climb over the close in obstacles first....
April 5, 201214 yr What scenery(s) are you using there in the vid Alan? I have just plain FSX default for that area and it sure doesn't look anything like your video. That was the default FSX scenery, with everything cranked up. I was surprised actually, it looks a lot better than I was expecting it to be, although I was dismayed to note that the river on the real vid, which looked like a good reference point for the turn, and which I intended to use for that purpose, was not there in the default scenery, or at least not in any sort of usable way. April 5, 201214 yr Commercial Member Hmmm, I guess it just looked a lot more stark at 1920x1080 than it did in the video, I had everything cranked up as well. I thought maybe you had GEX going or something. Yep, river was lame, I agree. Wonder if ORBX will ever do Bhutan? Jim

The manuel has the same procedure for engine fire/engine out. The a/c is well capable of obstacle clearance. The model also threw a double engine failure at me just a few days ago!!! Not at Bhutan though!! vololiberista There is nepalmsh.zip available on FlightSim but that's for FS2004 or nepal_fs9_v21.zip here vololiberista Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
April 5, 201214 yr What a fantastic treat! I failed to get off the ground initially. In my excitement I began with default passenger load and full fuel!!?? it was only after an aborted TO that I thought it may be an idea to lighten the load, especially taking off at 7000' ASL, duuurgh! To my credit though, I did manage a reasonable landing, although in fairness my approach was probably a little slower than it should have been... The only thing that was not possible is that the rwy is not wide enough for the VC10 to turn round and backtrack. vololiberista I actually managed to turn around on the runway with the Tu-154M - just barely though and it did take a lot of slow, careful effort with the gear just millimeters (or less) from the runway edges. I'd strongly suggest they expand the runway at the ends (a lot of single runway airports do this in order to avoid the cost of constructing more taxiways leading right to both ends of the runway) so that its easier to turn around. Also making the runway a little longer would be welcome too! That was the default FSX scenery, with everything cranked up. Al There is nepalmsh.zip available on FlightSim but that's for FS2004 or nepal_fs9_v21.zip here vololiberista 'nepalmsh.zip' is the one I use along with the Paro Airport scenery from David Cuvillier ('paro.zip' in AVSIM library). The scenery along with the mesh does add the river more or less in a similar fashion to the real world geography and it does wonders for the surrounding peaks. It's all originally for FS9, I don't know if the scenery and mesh would work in FSX. .............. April 5, 201214 yr Very cool! I think FSPassengers does this for FS9 too! Thanks for the info! Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. April 5, 201214 yr Author I actually prefer http://www.airnav.com/ for charts. That doesn't cover this airport though. vololiberista That doesn't cover this airport though. vololiberista Very cool! I think FSPassengers does this for FS9 too! Thanks for the info! If you're referring to the oxygen managment system then what I've put into the model is very specific to the VC10 relating to endurance 4hrs 10min, automatic delivery above 14,000ft, emergency pressure above 17,000ft, manual selection below 14,000ft. At all times if the pilot does not put on his mask (also modelled) the risk of hypoxia increases with the relative cabin altitude. In other words you can blackout. It's scary coming to at around 15,000ft to find yourself in an erect dive with mountains just below. vololiberista Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
