New System Time!

Any issues with this RAM? The timings are better and it seems it would be better for my overclocking? I'm not very good at this technical stuff so I don't know for sure...

And will it be compatible with this board? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131818

I checked the qualifying vendor list for the motherboard and this memory is not listed however an older model of Mushkin redline memory is listed that is 6GB (3 x 2GB) so that's confusing...hoping this memory will work

Brandon

The Redline you listed should work fine. The reason you don't see it on the Asus page is due to the ram being native at 1.65v when the motherboard officially supports 1.5v.

The only difference between 1.5v and 1.65v ram is the second is factory oc'd for higher speed and/or tighter timings. I have run 1.65v ram without issues but it leaves less headroom for oc'ing. 1.65 won't hurt your SB CPU like others may say.

With that being said, better 1.5v modules have been coming out which allow for speed and low timings. I would look around and see if you can find 1.5v sticks with tight timings as you can always bump the volts to gain speed.

Don't forget if you are going to OC you chip checkout Intels Performance Tuning Protection Plan (PTPP) also know as Intel's OC warranty. It was $20 on my 2500k and now I don't worry about it going bad when I put the coals to it.

Thanks for the info...this is where it gets confusing for me. I thought that the redline RAM would be better for overclocking however if it leaves less headroom for an OC then I don't want that. I am planning on overclocking for sure. I don't quite understand the relationship between timings, overclocking, and voltage when it comes to RAM no matter how much I read about it. Thanks for the intel OC warranty info....had no idea that existed!

Brandon

Honestly I doubt you'll have to touch the RAM settings unless you want that extra 5% OC on your CPU... most of the SB chips go to 4.5 GHz easy. Mine was not one of them but I gave up at 4.4GHz - even with that said I doubt you'll have any problems even if you go IB.

Well here is what I think I have decided on...just waiting on New Egg to get the GTX680 cards in stock...I hope that happens soon!

And an LG Blu-Ray Burner so I can get into the HD burning age! - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136241

I'm going to use my old case and power supply for the system since the new cases I was looking at are a couple of inches too tall for where my desk is....

Power Supply - EagleTech 700W Power Supply - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193013

Case - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156062

Comments? Suggestions? I think my old power supply will still be enough for this new system correct????

I think you should upgrade the PSU. That one seems to be a bit iffy....

Agreed - your current PSU is a joe blow PSU... you want Corsair, Seasonic, Antec etc...

I use this one and it is superb:

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817151087

p.s. I doubt your current PSU even has the PCIe connectors the GTX680 will require... even if it did - I wouldn't run a GTX 680 off a no name PSU with two 12v rails rated only at 20A...

Protect/Power your high quality components with a high quality psu...

edit: wow it has pcie connectors!

That Seasonic is an awesome PSU.- 750watts is just WAY too much if he is only using a 2500K+GTX680.

Remember, the GTX680 has a 195watt TDP. After everything is installed, he will pull less than 500watts at absolute maximum peak power.

I just want this guy to build an awesome machine without burning his wallet. hehe

Yes I'm pretty much at the limit of what I want to spend with this setup and I figured the old power supply would be ok. It definitely has PCI-E connectors since the two of them were plugged into my GTX260 video card. If it is not going to work and I need a different PSU I will get one but if it will work then I probably need to keep it.

I actually just did a bit of research on the GTX680 vs GTX260 in power consumption and they both suck nearly the same exact amount of wattage. I seriously doubt that you will run into problems if you only use a single GTX680. Just stick with your current PSU, then upgrade in the future.

I ran a 7950 and then a GTX680 on a HX520 without issues. I now have the 650 for breathing room.

As for Newegg and the GTX680 it is a crap shoot tbh. I only got my card by sitting on the newegg 680 page and hitting refresh every 15 to 20 minutes.

Sure it sounds stalkerish but I wanted it. ;)

That seems to be the only true way since auto-notify doesn't seem to be functioning since not enough cards are coming in. A NE csr told me inventory has to hit a certain percentage of auto-notifies in order for the system to send them.

Just keep checking newegg or check Evga's page. My buddy got his from Evga since NE is always out of stock.

Just stay away from Zotac on the 680's. Their ref boards have been having a bunch of issues from reading HardOCP and NE reviews.

I can't find anywhere on EVGA's page where you can actually buy one? They just list all of their dealers? If this goes on for too long I'll just have to get a 580 card I guess...I can't wait much longer than a few more days.

Just go to the 680 on evgas site and on the right it will say "Buy Now" or "Notify Me" depending on stock levels.

Only advice I can give on the 680 is keep checking NE or Evga.

Be careful of Amazon and Tigerdirect. Both are apparently selling cards that won't ship for weeks.

Coming from someone with a 850w lol...

750w isn't waaaaay too much... Is it too much? Absolutely I would agree...though I'm proud of you for saying so because the average guy does use far too powerful PSU. I bought mine for the gold rating and the brand name... And because my old PSU didn't have the connectors ;P

EVGA recommends a MINIMUM of 38A on the 12v rail for the gtx680. His current one has 40A over dual 12v rails... Barely enough... imho

Good luck finding one anywhere.... they've been out of stock since they were released....

I am regretting it now.... I suck 400watts at peak! LOL

Go for a GTX580 now and get a GTX680 later using the EVGA step-up program.-I bought a 580 2 weeks ago and I plan to get a 680 in a month or two.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I will just keep looking for a 680 cause I have the money now and just want to get everything in one shot. I'll look at upgrading the PSU if I have the money. I found the notify me link on EVGAs site so I guess they're out too.
