User challenges

Featured Replies

Don't know if this has been discussed before, but whilst we wait for Alaska....

It's possible to save the current flight state - <escape key> - Save flight, and it should be possible to transfer that flight to another user for them to complete.

To try it out I've zipped up a couple of challenging flights and put them on my website

http://www.keithb77.host-ed.me/

I would put them in this thread but I don't seem to be allowed to upload anything but pictures (?)

"You're lost over Kauai in your RV-6, its getting dark, the weather is unreasonable and you're nearly out of fuel.

You spot a tiny beach ahead, it may be your last chance to keep your feet dry...

For an extra challenge skip the first easy beach and go for the second smaller one.

Then turn round and take-off."

and

"An emergency medevac from Ka'ula and your RV-6 is the only plane available!

Land on the Rock, shutdown and load up the casualty (use your imagination for this bit).

Start up, take off and head for Barking Sands on Kauai as fast as you can."

Should be a simple job to unzip them to your flights folder.

You will need the Hawaii DLC.

If it works should open up another avenue for adventure and training.

Cheers

Keith

Well... this is a great idea...! I am not so much into missions and all that, but I like the idea! I don't like the official missions and jobs because of the yellow arrows and all that so this may be something nice... Clever thinking! We could create an archive with thousands of missions this way: some starting in the air, some starting at a parking space, and all with various circumstances, making everything a bit more surprising! I like it!

I will see this evening if it all works!

If it does, we should maybe think of and decide on some sort of required accompaning text file with specific information so that future uploaded missions will be easy to pick up and understand etc. so you don't have to figure out everytime what you have to do and what you need. And also maybe an estimated time. Things like that.

Fun idea!!! So now we may get 3rd party freeware after all for MS Flight...!

Did not work for me.

Hi Folks

Keith -

Great concept,

and I've a few to add from beta.

However gents,

and this is not a criticism,

please call them Freeflight Adventures, or something similar.

But don't title/announce/post/label these saved flights

as being challenges or missions.

They're just saved flights with zero user interaction.

We've been down this road in FSX,

and it's p*ssed of both downloaders & developers,

with users complaining that the "mission" doesn't run, or do anything.

EDIT -

bvgundy posted whilst I was composing.

? Case proven ?

Hi,

Downloaded the new Challenges but haven't tried them out yet. I noticed the reference to the location was wrong. The added Flights should be located under "My Documents" - Flight - Shared - Free Flight. At least with Win 7.

Correct, I was just about to post that. And btw the reference itself was also wrong (missing the Microsoft folder). Anyway, I just put that first challenge in the correct folder and was able to fly it, so it works! I will have to check if loading a flight from someone else doesn't change some settings... I did notice the inital zoom was different. I will try that rock mission now! bvgundy probably simply put the files in the referenced folder and that's why it didn't work.

EDIT

No rock missions anytime soon: that link was already slow the first time but now I only get a message the page can't be loaded... Anyway, it DOES work!

EDIT 2

No settings were changed so... we may have a winner here! Now let's decide on the description that should come with the er... Freeflight Adventures! ;) I think it could be really simple, something like:

Mission description:

Plane:

Location:

Uploaded by:

That's it. Mission description is obvious: a short as possible description of the situation and what you have to do. Plane and Location are not simply nice to know but tell you if you can do the mission or not: you may not have the required plane or region! And Uploaded by simply is nice to know. The weather theme, date, time of day, etc. etc. isn't that important, I think... The description might say something about that and it's nice to be surprised.

Only other thing I can think of is to put 'FA' at the start of the savegame name: this way it's clear that it is a Freeflight Adventure and not simply a savegame of your own.

Anymore ideas?

Apologies, Flights location was from memory, for Windows XP, for me its

E:\Documents and Settings\Keith\My Documents\Flight\Shared\Free Flight

I'll correct the site, and put the Windows 7 path on too (presume thats \users\Keith.....) - Jeroen, where do you think 'Microsoft' is needed?.

And retitle as Freeflight something... think Freeflight challenges is best title but does raise expectations that they are equivalent to MS Challenges.

Good that it works, maybe we can get hosting for more at Avsim?

With docs along the lines suggested by Jeroen.

The rock flight just d/l'd ok for me.

Cheers

Hi,

Loaded and flew the new Saved Flights. I'd previously landed the Stearman on the rock but after crashing the RV-6 gave up for now.

Must have tundra tires on the RV-6 as I was able to land on the beach, take off and fly to Barking Sands(?).

All seems to work well.

I think it has been suggested on the " big list", this is why I think a mission builder added to the Flight program would be very neat.

Ok, let's see if this works. Here is a Freeflight Adventure based on something that actually happened to me (in MS Flight  ) last week! Don't try this one if you haven't at least completed the later RV-6A landing challenges yet...

http://www.fsfiles.org/imagehost/uploads/1334237474.zip

Content of the included txt file:

Mission: You were flying towards Hana PHHN when a dense fog appeared. During the approach it became obvious landing there was out of the question, so you decided to fly on to Kahului PHOG which has an ILS. You are about to pop out of the mist, you just set VOR 1 to the ILS 024 frequency and VOR 2 to the OGG VOR at Kahului. Fuel is a quite low... Can you make it in time?

Plane: RV-6A

Location: Maui (Hawaiian Adventure Pack)

A mission builder would be nice because then you can get rewarded for what you have done and you may add checkpoints etc. But until then simply exchanging these kind of files is quite nice too!

Thanks. Its working for me now.

Nice one Jeroen .... I made it on time, but .... does upside down and tail first count?

LOL You survived, that's what counts. I have to admit I landed on the fields right before the runway... The first time I didn't land at all because I ran out of fuel, but that was before I added an extra gallon to the mission...

But er... I am a bit surprised no one else is jumping on this. I like it. It's a lot more fun creating your own stuff and downloading missions from others than buying a crappy addon from Perfect Flight (please don't spend your money on that...).

Great idea, Keith and nicely added to, Jeroen..This is just the beginning for Flight imo..keep up the good work, guys!

Well er... Anyone read about my problems here?

http://forum.avsim.n...og-transitions/

Seems my problems were related to a savegame, and probably the one I uploaded yesterday. So I wonder if anyone who has used my savegame still has nice fog...? All this problems made me a bit careful... so I am a bit afraid to simply load anyones savegames anymore until I am sure there aren't any problems with all this. Luckily I now know how to get rid of the problem (of pixelated fog), but it wasn't funny and it took me about 4 hours in total to fix it. The next time (thanks to my backup and knowing what to do) it will take less time, luckily. I hope. I do think it was just bad luck and a coincidence, but I feel oblidged to post this here, just to be sure.

I really would like to know if anyone has gotten him- or herself in trouble by loading someone else's savegame...!
