FlightSoft's HONG KONG 2004 Scenery evaluation

Featured Replies

Here ya go:"The story of Kai Tak started in 1924. The location of Kai Tak belonged to two billionaires Ho Kai and Au Tak, which explains the name of the airport. First planned as an estate site, the land was given to the government after the plan failed. Sooner it became a small airport for royal air force, flying clubs and pilot training center. In 1936, the first domestic airline in Hong Kong was established."Taken from a Kai Tak info web site.I had heard something in the past that it meant 'Nine Dragons', or something very similar..!! Perhaps that just referred to the area on which the airport was built?? It certainly sounds nicer...more 'romantic' -like 'Fragrant Harbour' which is what Hong Kong means!!

Thank you Yarvelling, for your detailed explanation of the meaning of Kai Tak !Paddy.

This is a good thread...I haven't flown to Hong Kong now for several months and if I remember why, I just wasn't getting a satisfying "whole package" view of flying into the area. Flightsoft's scenery I think was originally created for FS2000 which at the time would have gave me the "WoW" factor but now there are so many distractions in quality (as menytioned above), I just sort of lost interest. But this thread as rekindled me to go back and see wehat can be done. When I was in Model Railroading there was a term we used called "Kit Bashing", where you take the best parts from several different kits and create a little gem out of them. Why not try to do the same with what's out there?Take good 38m mesh to replace the spikey FS98 mountains, working the better looking airports ( and framerate friendly) airports, scnery bits, etc., you get the idea. Then create a little distribution sheet listing all the files used, (download filenames - not the actual files so we don't step on toes), and how to incorporate them into a nice overall effect. Surely there might be some unknown add-on's that are on some east Asia sites as well?I guess this all depends on how difficult it would be to exclude objects, mesh form the the Flightsoft product. What would really be great is if the people who made Manhatton Scenery would so the same for Hong Kong and the Fly Tampa people would create the airports! Beautiful AND framerate friendly!Just some ideas...

Nice idea, but using parts of Flightsofts' would be very difficult as even the terrain and mountains are all part of the basic scenery .bgl files...there is no mesh or landclass. There's only a couple or so .bgl's that make up Kowloon and the buildings and mountains are all polys in one file...:( That's why the peaks of Kowloon, Lion Rock, Armah Rock, etc are all just big basic pyramid shapes....looks like the Egyptians built them!!!There's some clever folks in this community though that could possibly sort out the good stuff from the bad and make it compatible with the default mesh, meaning that better meshes could then be substituted.....anyone want to give it a shot? Please??!!

Well, I've been playing around in my "Hong Tool Kit" all day today just to see what I could do. YOur right, they bundled all of the Hong Kong scenery into one .bgl file. Toooo bad. If we could just knock out the textures, water, and mesh it would blend in pretty good with the free stuff out there.I can't believe they are pushing that stuff as "FS2004" quality! I see no difference between those 2004 shots posted above and the 2002 version which really was created for FS2000. That explains some of the "FS98" look. But the buildings do look good, I like their Kai Tak airport. It even has better FPS than that freebie version. But it's the only game in town until someone creates something better. (hint-hint). Threw in the new AFCAD2 for Kai Tak and she's now open for business. Problem is...no aircraft!! So Mark, you seem to be the local Hong Kong guru out there. Ever seen any pre-made AI packages just for Hong Kong? Don't really want to create a bunch of new flights for the old airport. Ever seen anything like that available out here?

Hoi Vulcan,Have you got and tested Thomas Kwong's Kai Tak scenery already? If so, what is your impression compared to that of Roge Mole, more specifically concerning that confounded "stuttering"?Hope to read you!Cheers, Paddy.

meanwhile,no news from Thomas Kwong,no fps improvement in Roger Mole scenery.patch or upgrade for that of Flighsoft is only a dream,i think.so,i've been think to decompile the .bgl of this scenery to use only the photoreal mesh with 3d building and the airport.i hope it is possible.i try anything.Cheers

Well, after all this time, I need to ressurect this thread! I just purchased this HK2004 edition today from my local Game store (It was on sale for

I do use an AFCAD for KAI TAK but don't remember where I got it. If you do a search, you should find something which works with the flightsoft scenery. As for CHEK LAP KOK airport which is not even done at all in their cheapo scenery (which cost me around 70-80 dollars Canadian with shipping!), THOMAS KWONG has an excellent photo-realistic version of CLK - see VHHH2005b.ZIP (for the new Hong Kong airport) on AVSIM.John

From pictures of the flightsoft offering I can

Never found any Afcad2 to work with this scenery. I had contacted Flightsoft and got very unprofessional answer ( seems they do not know what Afcad2 is ).IMHO the only positive side of this scenery is the frame rate issue, but for the rest no further comment.I have uninstalled the scenery long time ago.Peter

>IMHO the only positive side of this scenery is the frame rate>issue, but for the rest no further comment.>Peter>>Peter, are you sure? i think the worst thing of this scenery is the frame rate.i never get more than 10-12 fps during IGS13 with defualt Cessna, without filters, with low details.is it possible?did u get good frames in fs2002 or in fs9 too?thanksLuca

So, at the beginning of 2005 the Hong Kong-fans community finds itself still saddled up with the old scenery, enhanced with some patches and add-ons.It seems that since the new Hong Kong Airport became operational, all designers and software-houses have lost their attention for the Kai Tak rwy 13 approach...Still, I am convinced that a total new package, based on all possibilities offered by the FS 2004-features and the present hardware, would be an unrivalled bestseller.Paddy.

i agree with you.any months ago i wrote to Flightsoft to know where to buy aerial photo of HK without receiving answer;its president then wrote me that probably HK2004 will never be updated, and it will be remade completely for FS2006.

Bad news and good news, Cathay! We'll have to wait and see.....
