May 4, 201214 yr Yesterday in order to make a left break for circling I was unable to switch from APP mode (descending the ILS path after full est) to HDG and ALT HLD mode. Which is the correct MCP procedure to do that? Thanks in advance. May 4, 201214 yr Author found! on FCOMv2 page 200: so rigth procedure is disengage ap, switch off both fds, engage ap, switch on fds, select new mode. thanks & ciao Fabio Poles - LIPZ i7 [email protected] [email protected] delid, NZXT Kraken62, Asus Prime X299-A, Gainward GTX1080 GLH, 32G GSkill 3600C15, 7Pro64-XP11 on Samsung950Pro
May 5, 201214 yr In my opinion, I find it dangerous to capture the ILS before circling because the plane will not level off at the MDA. So I fly these in vertical speed mode. Basically the GS INOP procedure. Now I wonder, how is it done by real life pilots? Ryanair does it in VNAV so to see. http://www.smartcockpit.com/pdf/plane/boeing/B737/diagrams/0010/ Bert Van Bulck
May 5, 201214 yr Commercial Member If you're going to do a circling approach using HDG SEL, you should use VNAV or V/S to get down the first part of the approach - don't lock on to a ILS signal. The AFDS is specifically designed to lock out other modes once you have an ILS signal captured as switching out of VOR/LOC or G/S inadvertently in IMC while on a coupled approach could be disastrous and result in a CFIT accident. Ryan think the op just wanted to know how to turn off the app mode, I think he just wanted to do another approach by circling around for another go thats the way i read his post or the other way he could have done it is doing the go around proceedures by pressing the ga switch. Well I'm sure the OP can clear this up for us, but there are a number of approach procedures where you first follow the ILS for one runway, then at a certain point break-off and visually circle around to land on a different runway. It sounds to me like the OP wants to do one of those. John-Alan Pascoe
