May 16, 201214 yr Well, its true HT needs applications designed to take advantage of the feature, but windows is one of those apps as well as a lot of other benchmark programs and etc I use. Keeping the feature active does generate more heat, but since my system is water-cooled, its not an issue. The only real reason for me not to run with HT enabled is that it causes micro stutters in FSX, but I consider that more of a problem of the FSX engine (and derivatives such as flight) rather than a problem with HT itself. I can turn off the feature in bios at any time and its easy because most modern Bios can store multiple "profiles" Cores can also be enabled/disabled in other ways at bootup. As an overclocker I have found HT to be a must. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. May 16, 201214 yr Moderator Here is a nice graphic displaying the difference of the 'K' SKU: My thanks to both you and "maddog" for the kind explanation. Now I'm informed and have the facts I lacked. :) Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
May 16, 201214 yr Author Cores can also be enabled/disabled in other ways at bootup. As an overclocker I have found HT to be a must. That is interesting, there seems to be a fairly common thought process amongst some overclockers, at least in the forum I frequent, that it is better for them to gain say 200 mhz by being able to overclock a little higher with HT disabled, versus running a couple hundred mhz slower with HT enabled. I guess really it has more to do with what one does for the most part with their pc. It is still early for me to say I guess, but from what I can tell in my case, I may benefit greater by having HT disabled. I am not increasing my overclock though, and perhaps I could, but just the added smoothness in Flight, and I suspect I may see the same in FSX if I ever get around to testing it, along with the lower core temps, makes it useful in my case. But like you said, easy enough to enable/disable - I am sure I will find one day a reason to enable it once again! Don B

Depends on the processor and how effective your cooling is. There is also a lot you can to with voltages if you really want to fiddle. In the end, it depends on how carefully you play your cards and how lucky you are. I have little more leeway than some because my processor runs overclocked and HT fine at or below normal voltages. The extra heat really kicks in when people start raising voltages towards the danger zone to stabilize an overclock. The water cooling helps, I know, and temps would probably be more of an issue without it. Tradeoffs. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... May 16, 201214 yr Author The water cooling helps even more, and temps might have been an issue without it. Tradeoffs. I hear ya. I have never taken the plunge to go full out water cooling - are you full bore with it, or using something like the Corsair H100? I will be working on a new build later on this year, considering going with something like the Corsair - don't know that I want to go all out water cooling. Thanks, Don B

May 17, 201214 yr Moderator It's a shame that the Peltier Effect has a maximum temperature drop of 22.2º celsius, otherwise it'd be a terrific cooler! Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
May 17, 201214 yr Author Corsair, though I have a newer model since this was taken Nice setup there Devon! I am pretty sure I will be going with the Corsair on my next build, which I hope to be in the fall. Thanks, Don B
