May 22, 201214 yr I really admire all you guys who are using the navaids, the VOR/DME, ILS, NDB, and TACAN (well, we can expect future aircraft to have an ADF Receiver and Indicator, but as for the TACAN, we'll need a combat airplane with cockpit. ) And I hope that Jeroen and others will start looking into ded. reckoning, an older style method of navigation that doesn't need navaids at all, although it is helpful to know prevailing winds. Oh, and you will need a chart and a pencil, not very technical at all. But, as for me, I fly IFR exclusively! That is "I Follow Roads". This is an even older method of navigation that senior pilots often used way back when. :LMAO: Just look at a map, pick out the road to follow, and fly over it. It's a very sure way of getting where you are going. I got the Puu Waa Waa Aerocache today, landed at the Ranch, and went looking for a Job. Since I don't have a lot of time for flying, the Hamburger Run was a quick trip to Waimea, perfect 10 minute flight. Here is the Google Map: That highway goes directly from the Puu Waa Waa Ranch to Waimea, nothing could be easier. Just keep your eye on the road (it's what I always tell the wife.) And voilà, the airport is in sight. Just got to turn the darn Destination Marker off someday. A lot easier than tuning, dialing, and triangulation and you don't have to remember the difference between radial and bearing! :LMAO: Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
May 22, 201214 yr The most valuable navaids I've ever found are water towers with town names painted on them in huge letters. Flight needs these.
May 22, 201214 yr I wonder how George Jetsons saucer navigates? (I am gonna guess GPS) We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. May 23, 201214 yr I found myself forced to scud-run during my long cross-country back in '79, and almost ran into a granite cloud, but saw the water down below, through a hole in the mist. Got back to my home field okay and got the sign-off, even though I had to divert to an alternate destination during the trip. Guess I still flew far enough. A lot of the flight found me 500 to 600' over I-5.
May 23, 201214 yr Author I agree with you about the water towers, Ray. Nothing like a water tower to identify a town. Back in the days of FS 2002, when autogen first came out, I made about 30 different models of water towers and sent them to the devs in hopes that it would give them ideas. I'm sure that these objects were already on their to-do list, and FS 2004 did finally have them. Here are a few of my very old models: At the time, I also made the scenery for a friend in Gulfport and put in a personalized water tower: Like so many people here, it seems he was some sort of kamikaze and so he actually landed on the tower and sent me this screenshot: I have no idea how many water towers there are in Hawai'i, but it would be nice if the real models were represented in Flight. I have seen plenty of them, but don't know if they are accurate models. Do any Hawai'i natives know? Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
May 23, 201214 yr No towers, really, at least in the parts I know. Just big ground-level cylindrical tanks, perched up on hill-sides above the towns. The convenient mountains really cut down on the need for towers. You've done some nice work on those, though. I love the graffiti!
May 23, 201214 yr I can use some variation in how I fly... although it's a pity that the only variation in how we fly is now following roads, non existing water towers or coast lines. wish we had more DLC instead for some variation where we fly... Phil Leaven i5 10600KF, 32 GB 3200 RAM, ASUS 4070 12GB EVO, Asus ROG Z490-H, 2 WD Black NVME for each Win11 (500GB) and MSFS (1TB), Rolling Cache 16GB, Photogrammetry always OFF, Live Weather and Live Traffic always ON, Res 2560x1440 on 27"
May 23, 201214 yr A lot easier than tuning, dialing, and triangulation and you don't have to remember the difference between radial and bearing! I understand you so well :-) Guess that's exactly what we do in the gliders when flying cross-country, using not only highways but many secondary roads/ways when we have to jump between thermals to "stay alive" ;-) We use SO MANY "Earth/Civilization Aids" in our flights... and no Navaids at all, and sometimes fly hundreds of kilometers and more than 6 hrs without loosing our track ;-) A Glider and nice weather features for soaring would be great in FLIGHT!!! Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
May 23, 201214 yr although it's a pity that the only variation in how we fly is now following roads, non existing water towers or coast lines. wish we had more DLC instead for some variation where we fly... I couldn't agree more!!! I understand you so well :-) Guess that's exactly what we do in the gliders when flying cross-country, using not only highways but many secondary roads/ways when we have to jump between thermals to "stay alive" ;-) We use SO MANY "Earth/Civilization Aids" in our flights... and no Navaids at all, and sometimes fly hundreds of kilometers and more than 6 hrs without loosing our track ;-) I'd love to do that in Flight but of course the problem is that the landscape is too generic. In real life everything is different but in Flight every farmfield looks the same and so do cities, which makes it hard to navigate like this. The only things that are not generic (apart from some detailed parts) are the roads and waters.
