June 9, 201213 yr Hi, just wanting to know if anyone is having the same problem I'm having in the new york area as far ils goes. when ever I come to final the ILS has only been working on the GPS mode and not NAV mode, now I have checked frequecys and course setting multiple times and it doesn't seem to be working correct no matter what I do. And then it only lines the plane up with the runway it doesnt lose alttitude or anything.
June 9, 201213 yr You have to switch to NAV mode in order to use the ILS. The ILS system is not part of the GPS system. What I do (when I fly a default type aircraft, which is rare these days) is fly GPS until ATC gives me my initial approach instructions, then I switch to NAV mode for the ILS. Here's a ILS tutorial I did a while back for the default 737! Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
June 9, 201213 yr Here is a good test fligt: 1. Start FSX. Build a flight using the C-172 used trainer, starting at dusk at KLGA RWY 4. 2. When it loads, set NAV1 to 110.5 PRI and 109.5 SEC, and COURSE to anything as it does nothing in ILS Mode. Set NAV2 to 113.1 PRI and 115.9 SEC, and COURSE to 040. DME to NAV2. Radio calls are optional in FSX. 3. Takeoff, turn left to the river, and climb to 3,000 feet. Turn on AP and engage ALT, and engage HDG twice. Turn left at the river and follow it to the V. Narrows Bridge. The LOC needle will be pegged right and when it starts to swing left, turn left to 040. Engage APP. The LOC needle will be active out to 25 miles and the GS bar out to 20 miles at 5,000 feet. At 12 miles and 3,000 feet, the GS bar will be up and will slowly come down as you approach the station. When it centers, the ALT will go off showing you that it has engaged the GS and the aircraft will start a ~400 foot descent. Reduce power, add flaps, and over the fence disengage APP, cut power and touch and go. NAV2 shows you the VOR radial you are on and provides DME miles. 4. Fly the same route back to the bridge and turn to 140 degrees. Swap to SEC freq. on both NAV1 and NAV2. This will set you up for approach to JFK RWY 4R. When the LOC needle starts to swing left, turn to 040. The GS bar should be up (if you are not too close). Engage APP and the AP will center the LOC needle and capture the GS and bring you in. If the GS bar is below center, it will not capture the GS. Have fun Dave

Okay, when ever I actually do that the plane then turns off course heading in some random direction. its like its turning the opposite direction from the runway.
July 2, 201213 yr Author when ever i come in range of the ils, if i turn the guidance from GPS to NAV it turns me to the opposite direction. Where , in the test flight above, did you have a problem? Dave when ever i come in range of the ils, if i turn the guidance from GPS to NAV it turns me to the opposite direction.
July 2, 201213 yr If all of the above suggestions are correct, is there a possibility you have added a 3rd party AFCAD file for LGA which might have messed with the ILS/glide slope? I have seen this from time to time when someone uploads a more 'up to-date' version of an airport and I decide to install it. The navigation aids might have been affected and don't function properly or at all. Just a thought... i7-9700K, MSI Z370, PNY 4070 Super, GTX 750Ti, 32GB GSkill, 43" curved Samsung, 32" BenQ, 11" LED, RealSImGear GTN750, Win10, P3DV5.4/P3DV6 and MSFS, several GoFlight modules, Saitek radio, Brunner CLS-E NG Yoke, Virtual Fly TQ6.
July 2, 201213 yr See my post on FSDT JFK ILS 4R. Some one else had problems in NY and by editing the AFCAD and unselecting Back Course the ILS works perfect. Bill
July 3, 201213 yr The test flight MUST be flown in NAV mode, This will test the aircraft response to the ground stations. Dave
