Computer Crashing Completley Running FSX

Featured Replies

I recently did a fresh install of FSX on my computer, and so far have little add ons installed, those being REX Essential, Wilco Airbus Series Vol.1, FSDT GSX, Mega Scenery Las Vegas Oahu and Reno, Carenado C208 and Cargomaster Expansion, CS 757 C130, and Just Flights World Airports 3. Now no matter what airplane, or what airport I fly from within I'd say 10 min. the entire computer crashes to the point of not even having power to it. I'm running an Asus M4A88T-M motherboard, AMD Phenom II X4 3.1 GHz proccesor with all 4 cores unlocked, Asus HD5450 Silent graphics card. I've never had this problem in the past. Anyone have any idea what it might be?

That sounds like a problem at a much deeper level than a software glitch. If it happened to me, I'd immediately suspect RAM problems, or some other hardware fault.

Is your PC sufficienty cooled ? I had that happen to me once a long time ago due to overheating.

Sounds very much like a hardware fault. PSU not big enough, a good 650W or bigger, Best to read reviews before buying power supplies hey are not all what they appear to be. Secondly what CPU, it may well be overheating as mentioned previously.

My PSU is a Coolmax 700W I'd think thats sufficient but who knows the CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 3.1GHz and I have all 4 cores unlocked Also I have plenty of fans, and I have had this computer for the last year or so with no problem like this

Devin,

Have you had the PC cover off to look inside?

computer components can fail at any time ... couple hours or 100,000,000 years. you just never know. i have a 1997 CRT computer monitor that works just fine. i've had a couple of newer CRT and LCD monitors die with much less use.

the sudden shutdown and for a while no re-start reads to me like the CPU has overheated and until it cools it will not restart.

look at all your fans, MOBO, and case vents for excessive dust, pet hair and other items causing decreased air flow.

a slowly dieing power supply is another culprit.

Sure have what should I be looking for it looks clean to me

The power supply is less than a year old but yeah i guess the cpu might just be bad

If you can, do not run FSX but run CoreTemp to see if any of your cores are running at high temps. That will then give you an idea of your cooling status. Also, check if your CPU cooler is not clogged up with the dust it sucks in. This is definitely a hardware issue rather than FSX or its add-ons

Alright I have core temp and it seems alright I'm going to try running it with fsx and see what it tells me

I think i found the problem all the cores are going up to 100% load and crashing

Well done, Devin. As has been oft said here, FSX far from being a RAM-dependent game, is definitely a CPU-intensive game. Now at least you know which way you are heading.

Well thanks for the assitance

The power supply is less than a year old

doesn't matter (see my post above).

one way to tell how 'well built' the component was built is to see how long the warrentee extends. in general companies shoot for a % of failure under warrenty ... so the shorter the warrentee time the 'less relyable' the product. a fun statistics problem ... and one i did many times in gaining my business degree 20 years ago.
