Question for AS 2012 Owners (Weather Themes)

Recommended Posts

I am considering buying AS 2012. If for some weird reason I don't want to download online weather, does this product come with custom weather themes, that are in addition to the ones delivered with FSX?

Thank You.

I don't think it comes with any custom weather themes, but you could grab historical weather (for the period covered) and it allows you to setup your own conditions (either via setting conditions via the form OR metar string on 'Edit WX' , or from dragging and dropping preset weather patterns onto the map.

You can save and load Wx settings too, so you can save your prepared conditions as a 'theme' of a sort.

There may even be prepared .wx files somewhere on their site for weather themes, I don't know. But certainly you could manually setup themes or historical weather simulations (that go beyond their 2008 start date or whenever the historical archives started)

You can make as many weather (custom) themes as you like, just takes up disc space. The Custom Themes is easy to use and set up

Thanks for the replies.

One followup question: how do you like your AS 2012? I have been reading the threads about the problems with REX Essentials and am leaning towards AS 2012?

I love it. Recently I've been experimenting with more colourful sunset options, which has been fun.

It's let me down once or twice on high altitude cirrus clouds (basically a flat layer that was about 10 foot above my cruising altitude, looked awful), but that's a minor issue. - And in fairness, saw that I didn't have the stratocumulus simulation option on, which affects cirrus layers.

But there's always a lot of bias in these forums, and a lot of polarization into 'how can you even consider product X instead of Y' (you see it a lot with the PMDG versus any other 737, there are even people that will bring it up against people wanting Classic or Original 737s :LMAO: )

AVSIM members generally seem to bias towards REX, so you'll find that there's a lot of 'REX is better than sliced bread', which in seems to bring out more vocalness when there are slight faults as with REX Ess. Oddly, elsewhere where I discuss flight sim issues, I generally find a bias towards AS2012, which is odd.

AS2012 has done a great job for me. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again or recommend it to somebody else. I do mainly short hops from airports in the SEATAC area to northwestern Montana and British Columbia. I have not been disappointed yet. As you probably know, the northwest gets a ton of low vis stuff in the winter and spring. AS2012 does a really nice job with the layers and visibility. The application also does have a few built in weather types (low vis, thunder, clear day etc etc) that you can easily drag and drop on a weather station if you want to. You also have the ability to go back in time and find some really nasty weather if you want.

I have been a long time user of Hi-FI products, started with ASA and have upgraded as each new version has been realeased, and each release has improved and made FSX a better sim to fly.

Never freezes or crashes, always works for me.

Yeah it come with some preset weather themes that you can drag and drop onto the map and then will appear in the sim. Not at my computer at the moment, but from whay I recall they are themes like stormy, ifr, snowing, clear, etc. Not really custom like the weather themes that come with ORBX, but preset none the less.

As mentioned, you can also build your own weather themes and then drag and drop them on to the map. Sometimes I will download the real weather and then drop a snow storm or some thick ifr on to the arrival airport for a challenge if the real weather isnt exactly what I feel like flying into.

I am using Hi-Fi's products since approx. four years, and I always find it very good (as far as FSX allows) simulating the real weather. You shouldn't regret the money spent.

I rarely, if ever, use weather themes. I take what comes and ASE I thought was good but 2012 is better. Go for it, it's money well spent. Great runway textures as well!

The beauty of AS2012 is that in addition to it's being stable and the best weather engine available, it is extremely flexible. The ability to create and save custom themes or use built in themes. Once you find a theme that you like, a quick click and you've saved it. Personally, I prefer the weather generated themes that can be created according to the available weather. You can also search for specific weather patterns. Still the most accurate and realistic weather depiction available for FS and I have tried them all.

Thanks for all of your replies. With the 30% off sale until the end of June, I think I will go for it. Happy flying.
