Strange Freezes and Graphic Objects

Beta releases are not "by definition more buggy and less stable." They simply are more likely to be buggy and less stable due to incomplete testing.

If they were known to be buggy and less stable, they wouldn't have been released. The known bugs and stability problems get fixed. It's the unknown ones, that may or may not show up when you are using it, that are a concern. Simply because it needs more testing doesn't mean it's broken.

But they should be avoided if stability is your primary concern, due to those unknown factors.

I had a Nividia card in my last computer, and can remember switching to the latest driver at one point, and having all kinds of problems. Had to go back to the previous version. You never can tell with drivers. That is why they always have a roll back option when installing a new driver in control panel.

Yes, and if you do find a driver version that works great for you, save a copy of the installer somewhere with your backup files, just in case you have trouble finding it online again.

Well, as I've looked, 6.12 was last stable, below is 12.7 as beta. BTW 12.6 works great for me.

I won't touch anything past 12.1 until the release notes from the manufacturer say that the Flight bugs are fixed, and at least 3 people that I trust verify it.

Beta versions ARE by defintion buggy. If the weren't they'd be release versions. Of course, you may never see the bugs, but always keep in mind when using beta software that you're on the bleeding edge. This info comes from 35+ years as a programmer.

I absolutely hate updating graphics drivers. When I was a helper for Gamespy some years ago, I told a grand total of TWO people to update their graphics drivers in 8 months, and both times were for known problems with specific versions. One guy was so used to hearing the tech support mantra "Update your graphcs drivers and call us back" that he asked if he should update. I told him he could if he wanted, but it wouldn't fix the problem he was having.

Anyone who has ever had to revert to an older driver knows that the lastest is not always the best. The first time this happened to me was on Silent Hunter 2. I'm actually glad that the current Catalyst drivers don't work right with Flight, as a lot of people will learn this very important fact about graphics drivers.

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I've just checked, and 12.6 isn't beta.
