Need help finding a joystick for FSX

Featured Replies

I am currently have the basic CH Flight yoke, which has the TPM levers. 99% of my flying is Cessna 152/172/182. A few days ago I purchased the Iris Christen Eagle and today the RealAir Citabria/Scout/Decathlon.

I would like to find a joy/flight stick to use with the new aircraft since the real ones don't use yokes. I am avoiding purchasing a separate quadrant, because if I did it would be the Saitek TPM and I don't have the funds for that yet. I would like any joystick that I purchase to have a TPM if possible, or at least the throttle & mixture.

Rudders aren't an issue because I have the Saitek Cessna pedals. As a kicker, the cost should be below $100 USD and even better, half that.

Any suggestions or experiences?

Thanks,

Ernie

Thanks.. I noticed that all of the buttons are on the left.

A Cessna is usually flown with the left hand, although I suppose if you're in the right seat you might use the right hand. In an aircraft that uses a stick, do you typically fly with your left hand on the stick?

I guess that depends on the aircraft. In my Pilatus PC7/PC9 and all my other trainers, the right hand is on the stick and the left on the throttle. The biggest advantage of the Logitech is that its cheap and has lots of buttons that can be programmed. To be honest, I've never looked for a left-handed joystick. Have a look at the Logitech Attack 3. Its an ambidextrous joystick with 11 buttons. I don't like how the buttons are placed for FSX but its workable. It's $20 on Amazon.

Thanks I saw that one, but couln't make out a hat switch, so unless iI missed it, it looks like the Extreme Pro 3D is the winner.

The Thrustmaster T16000M is very good and cheap; there is an Avsim review.

Bob

I also like the Thrustmaster T16000M. It's solid, precise and has a good feel. The throttle could be better, but it does the job.

Hello Ernie,

My stick is a Logitech Force 3D Pro, as far as I know the force feedback version of the Extreme 3D pro you are looking at. It's not the worlds best stick, but I like the force feedback part in combination with the payware add on FSForce (the standard FSX force feedback is horrible and should be switched off at all times). The biggest advantage is the trimming, in a real stick plane you put the stick in a position that gives you the desired pitch=speed and then you trim till the stick force is zero. The stick then stays in that position, which is rarely in the center.

with FSForce it works exactly as in a real plane: with you thumb on the top buttons (map your trimming there) you can trim until the force is zero and the stick stays in that position. Any other stick has to return to center while trimming, this one stays were I put it and I find that rather cool.

Bonus is the real nice configuration of force intensity (you can make your stick become more firm at higher speeds, nice for WWII prop fighers), runway vibrations etc.

Once you gather funds for the Saitek throttle quadrant, you can put that on the left to make it even more realistic.

As to the hand: this is a right hand stick and most stick planes are flown with the right hand on the stick. In the Scout you pruchased you will find most other controls on the left (throttle, mixture, prop, flaps lever), leaving your right hand free for the stick. Most, if not all, WWII fighers and modern jets will have throthles, gear, flaps etc. on the left.

The major exception are the modern stick Airliners, mostly Airbus, where the captain has the fly a lefthanded stick with his right hand for the central throttle quadrants.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

EZy
