July 16, 201213 yr Haven't been doing any of the jobs , just flying around, but today I did two of them. The second one was a cargo flight of about 200 miles. Nice scenery out of Ketchikan, flying north west to Snettisham Airport ( 7AK2) . The MC who critiqued my landing at the destination had a rather crappy attitude and was a bit harsh in his judgement of my landing skills on that short, narrow, runway. Anyway it was fun, and I am going to be doing some more of them.
July 16, 201213 yr Jobs are about all I've done in Alaska, other than some early exploring with the RV-6 to sight-see and find a suitable "home-base." I'm flying out of Kenai now (moved up from my original hub at Homer, as it's more centrally located for the fields in this area), taking Jobs from field to field, staying within about 250nm of "home" as I learn the area. I don't make it back to Kenai every night (in game-time) but I try. Once I've learned this area like the back of my hand, I'll move on to someplace else and start learning it. I only take fuel from the airport fueling window, never from the hangar screen, which adds to the challenge. If there's no field with fuel near the destination, I need to make sure I've got enough left over to get me someplace that does (and hopefully there will even be a Job taking me there).
July 16, 201213 yr I only take fuel from the airport fueling window Are you flying overloaded? I've found that if I don't worry about being a few pounds over, I don't have to worry about fuel that much. It would be interesting to see how someone approaches "real world" fueling without ever overloading the plane. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
July 16, 201213 yr I have done a couple long distance jobs that required me to refuel on the way there.
July 16, 201213 yr Are you flying overloaded? I've found that if I don't worry about being a few pounds over, I don't have to worry about fuel that much. It would be interesting to see how someone approaches "real world" fueling without ever overloading the plane. I try not to exceed max gross, but sometimes the plane is above max gross dry. If I need to, I'll make a "gas and go" stop along the way. I check the Jobs Board after I finish one, and I'm often taking Jobs at little fields with no fuel. I check near every potential destination, and have declined a few I would have taken if I had the gas to get there and then make it somewhere with fuel. But I can usually find a fuel source... either near my current location, at or near my destination, or not to far out of my way during the flight. I have not run out yet, but have landed the Maule with as little as 3.1 gallons of usable fuel remaining. That one was cutting it a little too close. I try to take lighter Jobs from fields with fuel, which lets me carry more gas outbound, then take on heavier Jobs as I burn my fuel-weight down, hopefully to or near someplace with fuel available. That helps, too.
July 16, 201213 yr Normally i planned my fuel about 1% per 7 miles. So i needed 10% fuel for a 70NM trip. That worked perfectly for most trips. But lately I use the RPM control to maximize speed, and either that or the title update from a few weeks ago seem to have increased my fuel consumption. So, 'better safe than sorry'-wise i take a little extra now, just to be sure. Mark
July 16, 201213 yr Starting in the Hangar, I use Distance + 10% and ignore the copilot. For clandestine missions, I use Distance * 2 since I travel well off the direct route. There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.
