Hard drive moving it using it question.

Featured Replies

Hello All

If I were to buy a new computer ,It would probably come with windows 7 (or whatever the current OS at the time I may buy)

My question could I take my current hard drive which has WINDOWS XP installed and of course my current FS9 setup as well ,and install that into any new PC and use that as a second drive so that I could continue to use XP and FS .

I am more than happy with XP and would rather go on using it ,than face all the potential hassle of getting FS9 up and running with a new OS.

Cheers Andy

I don't believe you could do that... I would be happy if others here tell me I am wrong and the way it could be done.

Because.... one of the Pain in the butt while moving up the hw chain is the reinstallation hassle.

If it were not for the reinstallation hasssle, I would upgrade my MB and CPU and even the memory every cycle (6 months) when a new CPU is announced

Hello Andy

With XP it rarely works out well, W7 on the other hand can do this quite well.

I have a proposition for you, if you are up for building your next rig.

I have sitting in my loft a nice MSI Platinum MB with an E8600 O/C to 4Ghz complete with 4mb of ram along with a GTX260 GFX card.

Yours for the price of the postage

PM me if you fancy a go at putting it together, the most you are going to need is a cheap case and a

PSU.

EDIT:

I see you got the head pulsating again, Nice one

yes you can do that. Just set up a dual boot system - one is XP with your FS9 etc and the other is W7. Your main issue will be getting the motherboard drivers of the new system onto the XP drive. Most times, doing an XP repair install from the CD will get you going. Once that is done, just set up a dual boot and you are good to go.

Thanks Mad , that's a very generous offer ,but I am not sure about my ability to put together a PC for myself and still retain my sanity. (Just putting in Gcards, ram etc usually sees the air turned blue and my heart rate rate reaching critical cardiac overload levels  )

It does seem though that my idea of using XP on my present drive is a non starter though ( I sort of suspected it might be the case)

Again thanks for the offer.

RE Shimmer !

Its only a partial success .It used to be the photo top left that shimmered (and that's what I wanted ) but I can only get the sig thingy at the bottom to do it now.

cheers Andy
