Hardware CDU compatible with the NGX? tips wanted!

Thanks Andy

Then I know that the VRInsight works with the NGX... so that might be another way if I cant get confirmed that the open cockpit cdu works...

(the reason that the open cockpit one is more to be the one) is simply that i plan to use it only for the ngx at least at the moment, and it definately looks more boeing... And i guess that the right looks superseedes the possibility to have it working with many aircrafts...:)

But if I cant get a 100% confimation that the open cockpit works then i´ll buy the vrinsight one I guess...:)

I have mailed open cockpit a week ago but still no answer... so they doesnt seem to be to entusiastic about selling their products...

Interesting stuff...

Just a couple of points to the users of the VRInsight CDU II:

How do you get the NGX's FMC on to the CDU? Is it a case of undocking the 2D FMC panel in FSX and dragging it to the CDU? I assume Windows will see the CDU as a third monitor? Reason i ask that is because i use a frame rate limiter, and as soon as i undock a panel in FSX, FPS drops by exactly 50%. Does the CDU software remember window positions, or does it need reconfigureing everytime?

I take it you need a spare output from a video card? Too bad, i am using both my DVI outputs for monitors - and something tells me im in for a world of pain if i install a second graphics card...

Yes to both points, although I've never seen the FPS drop you describe

Apparently it does, but I find it easier to just quickly drag the window to my preferences.

Yep.

Not sure if this is any help but for my soon-to-be-replaced not-so-good-looking homebuilt CDU I've defined a new window in the NGX panel.cfg that only contains the virtual CDU without the frame and buttons (just the displayed text), like this:

gauge00=PMDG_737NGX!CDU_Screen, 0,0,800,600

This panel can then be placed on any screen, e.g. a monitor on a hardware CDU.

It works in windowed mode and fullscreen mode, no need to undock into a real Windows-style window.

I'm using Nvidia Inspector to limit the FPS and I haven't noticed any bad behavior.

You'd still need another graphics card in this case though.

By the way, I remember reading in some other CDU thread here a few months ago that there may be plans to extend the SDK to be able to read out the currently shown CDU text. Or perhaps it was just wishes, but it would probably be useful if you can't add another monitor to your main FSX machine for some reason. You could then create a networked solution by running a tiny software on another computer that polls the output via simconnect and displays the text.

Hey guys, I'm also curious as to how this will pan out. I've sort of convinced the wife I need a CDU for the 737, and with my bday coming up next month (also with the price of OC's newest CDU), I just might be able to get it. A few questions though, what software do I need (Project Magenta...etc), and any idea if the CDU keypad/screen can be used for other software outside FSX? I'm more in the process of building an A-10C cockpit for the DCS Simulator. The CDU is roughly the same size, and it would be great if the key presses could be read (ie: When pressing buttons, are they read as any other tactile switch signal, or are they quiet without fsuipc and the like)?

The software question is the bigger one so I know what else I need to buy besides just the CDU.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have ordered the FMC V3 from OpenCockpits (They call it FMC V3, but it is the CDU).

I have written the SIOC script and the C++ interface to the PMDG SDK and will start testing it as soon as I get it from OpenCockpits.

It will be integrated into my OCP47X7 Manager and later modified for use with both the PMDG B777 and B747 when those airplanes are released with their SDK.

I will inform this forum when the interface is released.

Can you / someone please let me know how to do this? Iv added the line in the panel.cfg (had to use gauge17 as 00 was already taken). What do i need to do next? Thanks!

Hi,

This is what I received yesterday from Opencockpits om my question if it is PMDG 737NGX compatible:

Hello

The price does not include VAT.

Regrettably PMDG 737-800NGX is not yet compatible with our module. It will be in a few weeks.

Another problem seems that the CDU (FMC) requires a VGA/DVI port.

For my 3 monitors I use already 2 x GTX 580. In "Span display surround" the 4th DVI port cannot be used.

Did somebody solve this in this configuration?

Im interesting... to me they said that the drivers for the ngx will be ready in just a few days...

But I have placed my order more than a week ago and still hasnt heard anything... so I guess I have to wait while longer to try it out :)
