July 27, 201213 yr Folks If I change from an HD 5870 to the GTX 580 to better use DX10 preview mode: Will I be able to achieve vsync in DX10 mode (I see tearing with my 5870 in DX10 preview) Will the nVidia frame rate limiter work in DX10 preview? The inevitable one - and yes I have read Word Not Allowed's guide - will it achieve a smoother rendering, in the light of my modest AMD dual-core/4 gig/32 bit OS system... I'm considering this as a first step in an ongoing upgrade process. Next would be an Ivybridge processor/mobo/8 gig bundle plus 62 bit. Thanks for all thoughts.
July 27, 201213 yr You'll have better graphics and maybe slightly better performance but a CPU upgrade would do a lot more for you.
July 27, 201213 yr Author Thank you, but actually my frame rates aren't too bad, and a cpu upgrade won't help clamp my frame rates in DX10 preview, nor fix (vsync) image tearing in DX10 preview, which is what I'm trying to achieve in the first instance, and will a GTX580 do that for me?
July 31, 201213 yr For the money I'd recommend a GTX 670. Cheaper and quite a bit more performance. Randy Swofford
July 31, 201213 yr Author Thank you, a GTX 670 is on the radar then. Word Not Allowed recommends using in-game frame rate limiting for smooth game play; with my HD5870, in DX9, my game play is much smoother with the external limiter, displaying very abrupt, repetitive, almost 'timed' hesitations when using the in-game limiter. However I am still keen to know from you nVidia users, please: Does the frame rate clamp in the nVidia driver limit in DX10 preview mode? Does the nVidia vsync mechanism work to prevent 'tearing' in DX10 preview mode? I hasten to say I have read the information contained in other threads here, but comments seem to relate to DX9, not DX10? Thank you,
July 31, 201213 yr I hasten to say I have read the information contained in other threads here, but comments seem to relate to DX9, not DX10? Hello That is for a good reason, DX10 is still broken in FSX. Simply not worth the trouble.
July 31, 201213 yr Author Ah, but improvements to shaders are happening which correct many graphic anomolies making DX10 more attractive, and that's exactly why I want to know if nVidia cards do clamp frame rates and vsync properly in DX10! Many thanks
July 31, 201213 yr Yeah o can't answer that I've sImply never messed with the DX 10 preview. Randy Swofford
August 5, 201213 yr Commercial Member To answer your question, I have a 580, vsync no problems, no tearing. I also have an AMD 6970. Very good card but for FSX the 580 is easier to setup and more stable in my opinion. In fact, I will probably pick up a 2nd 580 for when I want to run Surround for exterior shots. August 7, 201213 yr Author Thank you Clutch, so you can confirm that GTX580 runs FSX DX10 preview with driver-based frame rate limiting and allows vsync.
