JohnCi's Challange/FS2k4 Gulfstream IV almost done!!!

Featured Replies

Gulfstream Update almost done. I know Jim wanted to do it but I couldn't resist seeing we won't be seeing one from Eaglesoft in awhile. Everything is almost done except for resizing the gauges in the cockpit and ironing out why the plane doesn't handle spoilers being deployed in flight very well. Contact points is still not quite right as I noticed during landing that I got tire smoke before the wheels even touched the ground. I think I might let Jim figure that out since he was the first one to step up to the plate for the challenge... Maybe the guys at Eaglesoft can offer some guidance and/or help in updating the VC cockpit lighting. Other than that we all will soon have an FS2k4 Gulfstream sooner than I even thought...Mike Stone's FDE works very well with this older model I might add. I had to do a few tweaks here and there but for the most part I love his FDE.. For those that don't know, this is an update to Rick Sasala's Gulf IV for FS2k2. You can find the original here on Avsim or over at Flightsim.com. This model included a VC, Cabin, and custom 2D panel... JohnCI and Jim (OneTinSoldier), you guys will need to get the files from me to make sure this thing flies on the numbers. Also you guys can clean up anything I forgot or left out in the FDE...Tom van der Elst, can you do some repaints for this bird???Thanks...

Hi Dillon,So far I have just been downloading some FDE utilities, reading some of the utility docs and FS2004 SDK docs and what not. What did you do? Did you use just plug in Mike Stone's .air file and aircraft.cfg file and make some adjustments yourself? That it what I was considering doing. I don't think that would be to hard to do if you know your way around an aircraft.cfg file somewhat. But after looking things over a little I decided I would try and create an FDE using Jerry Beckwith's 1% spreadsheet. So I have been searching the web for Gulfstream IV specs to plug into the speadsheet. Just curious as to how you are resizing the gauges. Hand editing the panel.cfg? Or perhaps by using Panel Studio? In order to update the VC lighting you would probably need to download the the source that JohnCi mentioned from FreeFlightDesign and open it up in GMax. I wouldn't know for certain though as I have never designed an aircraft. I just know the VC is contained in the model and I would think that update the lighting that it would probably require editing the VC textures. It would seem that there are some aircrafts that have the VC textures in the 'panel' folder, but I don't think this is one of them. I could be wrong about any of this because as I said I have never gone about designing an FS aircraft."Gulfstream Update almost done. I know Jim wanted to do it but I couldn't resist seeing we won't be seeing one from Eaglesoft in a while."I don't mind that you decided to tackle this yourself. The more people that want to look at it and work on it will most likely make the end result better. ;) If more than one person makes an update for this bird and uploads it to the Avsim library it wouldn't be the first timeI have seen multiple updates by multiple authors for for an aircraft.More power to you,Jim

Do you want to work together on this??? I can mail you my adjustments; you can then fly the aircraft and see what you think. I just took JohnCI's suggestion and merged Mike Stones aircraft.cfg with Rick Sasala's. I used Mikes 'air' file though... I think it flies pretty good but you can check to see if it's on the numbers... Some things need to be cleaned up concerning the contact points and spoiler deployment but overall she flies pretty good now. I would like to get those gauges fixed so they sit in the panel correctly, maybe we can concentrate our efforts there is your fine with the FDE I put together. I don't have GMAX so I don't know about the VC lights at night. Maybe I can get the boys over at Eaglesoft to offer some suggestions. I had to move all the lights into their correct positions including the Cabin lighting. Give me your email address and I'll send you what I got. I feel it would be better if we got a group of guys to work on this together versus 5 or six people doing by themselves. I got enough done tonight to at least make the plane flyable in FS2k4. It shouldn't take long to get this plane up to FS2k4 standards if we work together...

Do a search on Rick Sasala, it should bring up his Gulfstream.... It's the same model that we're working on...

You guys can have these textures for the project If you would like. They are my textures for 2002 tweaked for reflections, dxt3 with no mips. I changed the tires also. Here is a shot of each, they are what I consider traditional textures for the GIV.http://www.x-plane.org/users/hornit/g5.jpghttp://www.x-plane.org/users/hornit/g5a.jpg Are you guys going to work on the model at all? IMHO it's pretty good already, but could use a fix or two in three areas.Cockpit glass seems off a bit to me, shapes not quite right, the cabin windows seem to be a tad bit too low, and the tail needs the large fairing on top. Still it's a decent representation of the jet I think. Do me a favor and send me the air file etc and I can help with the fde a bit I think.Hornit

Hi Dillon,I may not be able to devote too much time to this until the beginning of next week as I stated in the other thread. So it is great that you have worked on it and are flying it already. :) Anyway, here is my e-mail address. If I do find a little time here and there during the remainder of this week I will have a look at the stuff.linuxrh at comcast dot netCheers,Jim

Hi Dillon, contact me at tvan_der_elst at ilse.nli'll go and repaint some this weekend.cheers

Hornit,I have never loaded GMax nor tried nor tried any FS aircraft designing. I wasn't planning on it here either. All I wanted to do was update the FDE so it's flyable in FS2004. And it sounds like Dillon has already gotten that pretty much done. I was still thinking I would try making an FDE for it using Jerry Beckwith's 1% spreadsheet. But finding all the specs on this plane that the spreadsheet wants seems a little difficult so far.You never know though. Since the source for this plane is available I might install GMax and have a look around at what it's like. Whether I'd learn GMax or actually do anything is another matter though.Regards,Jim

If you haven't tried GMAX yet the learning curve is very steep, it's just not an intuitive program. It will likely take you quite a while to become proficient at it. I tried a year or so ago, and won't go back to it. I'll stick with painting and flight models.Hornit

As part of my suggestion to work with Rick's aircraft, I was hoping one of the GMAX designers could take a look at it. Only thing I noted with it is that the wing shape might be a bit off--a bit too Delta shaped compared to some G-IV 3-views I've seen, and the horz stab size might be a bit too small.Count me as one who never took to GMAX--FSDS 2 has been easier when I get the time to play with it. But Rick's willingness to share his source really opens up the potential for this project, since it allows for as perfect an aircraft as time allows...-John

Well guys I'm all done on my end for now... She flies great now and is ready for the rest of this team to take a look at what they can do. I can email my updates to all you guys involved to see what you can do. I updated the gauges in the 2D panel as well as the 3D panel, we no longer have the brown edging from the default 747. Before this get's officially release I'll have to get permission from the gauge programmers. I used the gauges from the freeware panel called "Generic Twin Engine Heavy Panel" by Ken Mitchell over on Flightsim.com. I would also like to see some great GMAX designers clean up this model a bit. What I really don't like is you can see outside under the bathroom door in the VC. Some texture needs to get placed there so VC is rock solid. We may need to verify she flies on the numbers but that's not a big issue. She flies wonderful now so I'm not too concerned. With a little care she'll get up to 45,000ft.I also would like to see someone work on the Cockpit night textures... The cabin looks great at night but the cockpit is blood read. HEY RON (Eaglesoft), would you please give some Gmax dummies some advice to cure this problem. Thanks... We need some more quality gauges in the VC to monitor our fuel and engines. I'll keep looking around for something that will mesh right but I hope other look into this as well, I'm open to any suggestion I can find...Other than that she's looking good...Jim I'm sending you the files now...
